Which Home Consoles Do You Own? Why, Why?
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 4:30 PM on April 5, 2008
Gather around children! It's that time of the week again, time to confess your sins to the TUD Giraffe. He's already to listen with open ears and arms. For those not in the know, Tell us Dammit is our opportunity to learn more about you reader person. That way we can feel closer! And perhaps, even for a fleeting second, feel kinda bad when we ban your arse. Here's how it works: We ask a question. You answer it. So! This week, the TUD Giraffe asks:
What home consoles do you own? And why? Here, in Japan, I've got a PS2, a broken DC, a GC, a PS3, an Xbox 360 and a Wii. Why...? Hrm, 'tis me job, boy, me job.

PS3, Wii, 2x360's (one has issues) PSP, DS. I once had many more classic consoles, but in a stupid move that I now regret I sold them all to change things in my life. Worst decision ever! I've been a gamer since I was 5 and it's never going to change!

there is a reason why i have been able to have owned almost every console in existence.
If you live in Manhattan NY, particularly Washington Heights, there is a place called Astral PLaza Mart. aka Flea Market. i dunno the name is interchangebale depending who you talk to..lol That place was like ebgames but better in the fact that they had every console, and a shitload of games, including imports (yes i broke the tabs on my snes to play import SF2, good times :) and there i pretty much bought and traded every console you see on my previously owned list. which reminds me i need to go over there to find some ps2 games:D

Oh boy... an Xbox 360, a NES, 3 Sega Genesis, a SNES, a Wii, a PS1, and if you want to count it as a home console (Since that's the only place I ever play it), a DS. Why, you ask? Well, why else? I love video games, and the consoles listed are the perfect tools to portray said love. Hopefully, when the price goes down and there is a game I really want for it (Such as LittleBigPlanet), I will pick up a PS3.
Continue on.

PS3 why? Uncharted, R&C:FToD, FFXIII, LBP, PixelJunk Monsters, AC, and much more.
PSP why? Daxter, R&C:SM, GoW:CoO, Patapon, FFVII: Crysis Core.
Never owned a console/handled before, but got sold on PS3 when Assassin's Creed was anounced.
After all, who needed consoles back in the good old days? Amiga was and is superior to all the NES, SNES, GB and other toys ;)

An N64 because of Mario Kart and Golden Eye.
A Dreamcast because everyone said I had to.
A 360 because I wanted to believe in Microsoft this time around.
A PS3 because Sony didn't disappoint last generation.
A DS because of Pokemon and FF3.
A PSP because of Jeanne, Disgaea (again!) and FFT.

I like these topics because it let's you know which kotaku members don't read. Notice the ones listing which handhelds they own. ;)
I own a PS3 and Wii. The reason being that last gen I owned PS2, GC and XBOX. Looking back I have no idea how I was able to get those as a kid in high shcool. I bought the GC first because smash bros was a favorite of mine and melee looked like everything I wanted and more. Fast forward a bit and I'm very dissapointed with the game selection. At this time I didn't follow console statistics so when I eventually did learn how many consoles Sony and sold compared to Nintendo (the reason for the game selection) I thought it was a typo.
I ended up playing jak and Daxter at a friends and loved it. It was then that I started paying attention to game developers(realizing the devs had made Crash). I saw a trailer for KH and being a huge Disney fan but never having played a FF before I knew I had to have it. A month after KH launched I picked up a PS2.
At some point I bought a XBOX and only bought KOTOR and Halo 2.
Which brings me to this gen. Because I had the most fun with my PS2 I was bound to buy a PS3. Despite the problems Sony had with 3rd parties most of my favorite PS2 games had been first party. SotoC, J&D, R&C.. And the kind of games always seem to land on Sonys console.
I did buy the Wii first because I thought the concept was very cool. So far it has yet to become what I expected but I still have fun with some of the games.
I currently have no plans to buy a 360 as the XBOX was my least used console and things don't look too different for the 360.

In order that I got them.
N64: My first console. Has more of my favorites than any other, and I still play it to this day. So many good memories.
GameBoy: Who didn't have one?
Broken Gamecube: Had to buy because of Melee, and I was a Nintendo fan.
GBA (Like 5 different ones): It was the only handheld. It's when I really fell in love with handheld games and started playing them like console games. All the Mario Advances, Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission, River City Ransom EX, FFIV (the only FF I really liked), and so many other games I can't even remember them all.
PS2: Had to buy because of Broken Gamecube. Besides, I couldn't put it off any longer, PS2 had awesome games.
DS fat and lite: Loved the GB and GBA, and the DS is continuing Nintendo's tradition of providing good quality handheld games. Should note that I have owned 6 due to multiple defective screens. MKDS was my existence for a while.
Super Nintendo: Solely for playing Turtles in Time!
HP Pavilion dv6000: Not really a gaming laptop, but I've played so much Morrowind on this thing that I can't exclude it.
Wii: Had to buy because of Brawl and broken Gamecube. I've also had 2 of these, and had to get one repaired.
360: Was set on getting a PS3, but I just got tired of waiting for games to come out, and the combined forces of Mass Effect, GTA DLC, working Orange Box, and Oblivion made me go with the 360. Also, with the 3 year warranty, I don't see a reason not to get it. It's also the only console that has never frozen on me or given me any problems (except once with Oblivion).
Coming soon: 3.16 Dual core Alienware with 8800 GT and 4 gigs DDR2. Will be awesome, but my bro will be playing on it most.
Basically, I love Nintendo games, but I'll also usually buy the console I think will have the most good third party games. Hope I can get a PSP at some point, and I sort of want a PS3, but I don't have the money right now.

DS since its amazing and I own an R4.
PS2 since there are a bunch of good RPGs and such for it; modded to enjoy American releases early.
Gamecube since that was the console of choice between that and an Xbox.
SP because I wanted to upgrade from my Advance that was shitty and had no backlight.
PS1 was so I could play the original Final Fantasys and also Silent Hill/Vagrant Story and Star Ocean II.
GBC because that was my first handheld and I could enjoy the original Pokemon Blue. Later I purchased Pokemon Red, Yellow and the Japanese Green.

Right now hooked up are:
Xbox360- I'm an RPG nerd and the 360 is light years ahead of the competition in this department. I like Halo and I think Live is the best online service in the biz right now. The main reason was that I moved away from my PS2 and shifted exclusively to the Xbox last-gen.
Had a PS3- gave it away to my brother cause I realized I have no interest in any of the exclusives except for GT.
PSP- Most versatile handheld system on the planet. It's a great piece of machinery. I'm not a brand homer- I'm typing this on a Vaio right now too.
In the past: everything except 3DO, Sega CD, 32x, and Gamecube

These are all the systems I still own. They're all still operational, and I still play them when I need a bit of nostalgia. (Excluding Broken or lost systems)
Sega Genesis - Christmas, 1994. First game: Sonic The Hedgehog
Playstation - Christmas, 1998. First game: Spawn the Eternal
Playstation 2 - Christmas, 2001. First game: Onimusha.
(modded) Playstation 2 - Summer, 2006. First game:
Gamecube - B-day, 2004. First game: Metal Gear Solid: The twin snakes.
X-Box - Winter, 2005. First game: Half-Life 2.
Dreamcast - Spring, 2002. First game: Last Blade 2
X-Box 360 - January, 2007. First game: Gears of War
Wii - 2007. First game: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Playstation 3 - Christmas, 2007. First game: Heavenly Sword
PC - ????. First game: Oregon Trail (of course)
I still own each of them for various reasons. Some were gifts from family, need a back-up console, just bought, I don't believe in getting rid of whats not broken, etc. Most of all, I simply like having them around. Good times.

I'll leave out all of the older consoles and I'll speak of current gen only.
Wii - Reason: First party titles, duh.
PS3 - Reason: Little Big Planet.. No, seriously. That game pushed me to buy a PS3. I wanted one before, but once I saw footage on that game, PS3 became a priority. Another reason is because I absolutely hate Xbox.. but we won't get into that. :)

Hmm, well, I've gotten a:
SNES- Awesome system, Mario RPG ROCKS!
N64- Another great system. Can't go wrong with SM 64!
PS1- Oddly enough, this is the system I had the LEAST games for. Still, I love Driver, as well as Driver 2. To think we would have to wait until the PS2 for a bigger leap after those two games.
PS2- Who DOESN'T have one of these?!?!
PS3- Got it last July for my birthday, been playin' it ever since. I picked it instead of the 360 simply because I can't live without some of the Sony franchises. Sure, I could play Bioshock or Mass Effect on the 360, but, my home is on the PS3, and, it will probably stay that way until I get some extra cash.
PSP- While not a console, I still use the PSP at home, ALL the frickin' time. On the can, downstairs, outside listenin' to music, I take that baby everywhere I go.

I wish I still had my old NES and SNES, but at the moment... correction. I WISH I had all the game consoles, but at the moment I just have the good 'ol Playstation 2. Why? 'Cause it's the single greatest game system ever made, I suppose. There's just too many near-perfect games on the PS2.
Since everyone is listing their (incredible) library of consoles, I feel compelled to provide something similar. Just looking over at my collection, I realize I could do a list of twenty-odd games on the hardware that could pretty much be considered singular masterpieces, but that'd be more than a little self-congratulatory.
Instead, I suggest you yourself reflect on the life of the PS2 and remind yourself how many incredible games exist for that console - and it's not even dead yet. There's at least one upcoming game for the system that has RPG fans in particular salivating: Persona 4. The console's 'replacement' has been out for a year and a half, and the ten-year-old hardware of the PS2 is still going strong.
I heart you, PS2. And just as soon as my tax refund comes, you'll have a new baby brother!

ill buy a ps3 once final fantasy is released.

I'm a typical consumer, so naturally I am loyal as a man with ADD in a strip club.
While I didn't consciously do this from the beginning, I switch companies every generation. I used to do it so I could enjoy all the franchises everybody loves, but now I do it so that I can use backwards compatibility to catch up on old games that I missed out on.
Five years or so from now, I'll abandon Microsoft, but will be eyeing Nintendo's or Sony's latest console.

I've got a Dreamcast (in the closet) that I bought in college for $99. Best hundred bucks I ever spent. Japanese PS2 with no games (only use it now to play the DVDs I bought while I was living in Japan). I was originally a GT4 bundle, but I have since solf all my Japanese PS2 games. I had a Wii, but it was recently put up on Ebay and sold. I have a PSP because I was very interested in the homebrew scene. In Japan I was using it to keep my programming skills sharp. Now my wife is the one that uses it the most. I have a DS (technically it's the wife's, as I gave it to her as a present) that never gets used. And of course, I have my baby, my 60gig launch PS3, that , other than the PSP in the last couple of weeks, regularly gets the most use.

Two SNESes, a Sega Saturn, a Sega Dreamcast, an original SCPH-1000 PlayStation, A PS2, an Xbox 360, and a Wii.
Portable wise, I've got my PSP (phat) and a GBA SP that I got from a friend, but have no charger or games for it.
I also have my PC which I use for gaming, and my laptop with which I occasionally play some older game, like Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun.
I might get a PS3 later this year, but I'm still not entirely sure, since I don't really have a high def TV (I've got my 360 hooked up to my 20.1" LCD monitor) and it just seems wrong to have something that can play Blu-ray without an HDTV.
(I'll also include a list of consoles I've owned:
Nintendo Entertainment System (Broke after a long while, bought by my parents when it first came out.)
Sega Genesis (2nd one. Bought for me for Christmas when I was a kid, still worked when I eventually sold it to a friend.)
Gameboy Pocket (Got at a pawn shop for $5)
Gameboy Colour (Got for Christmas one year, sold it when I got a GBA)
Gameboy Advance (Got it for my birthday one year (which coincidentally is today) but sold it after not using it for a while.)
ColecoVision (Got for free from a friend, used it 'til it stopped working.)
Many different PCs over the years, starting with a Tandy 1000 and ending with an HP Pavillion.. something.
A PSP that broke, and has now been replaced with a new PSP. (When upgrading to a new firmware (official) it just bricked itself. Wtf?)
An Xbox, which I sold after getting my 360 so I could buy a few 360 games.
... I believe that's it.

I have a SNES, N64, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, GBA, DS fat and PS3. Got the PS3 because I loved the titles that were coming out for it and I knew that I would actually try online play if I didn't have to pay for it. Plus I figured I could convince my roommate to get a 360, which has only had a few titles that have interested me.

I have a broken NES, and one that works. I can't bear to throw the one that doesn't work out... it's a simple enough thing where if I ever find enough fucking time, I can fix it. It's my childhood, man! I'm a purebred Nintendo fan.
I also have a PS2, which is still the system I find myself playing the most because of games like GT4, San Andreas, Bullyy, The Getaway (and its sequel), Shadow of the Colossus, et cetera.
I've also got an original Xbox, but not too many games for that one. It was basically a Halo machine.
I have a PS3, which (until LBP, GT5 and GTA IV come out...) is mainly being used as a media centre. I wanna put a bigger HDD in it.
I've also got a Wii. I play Endless Ocean and Mario Galaxy on. I was also addicted to the pool mini game on Wii Play. It's also been an awesome gate to the 'Cube for me, since I never had one of those. So far, I only have Windwaker and Pikmen on it, but I hope to get more games when I have more time and money.
I have enjoyed my DS (launch-day white!!!) immensly since I've gotten it, which was solely for New Super Mario Bros. Since then, I've fucking LOVED it for games like Phantom Hourglass, Professor Layton, Cooking Mama, Phoenix Wright, Trauma Centre: Under the Knife, Mario 64 (which is awesome since I don't have a 64 anymore) and others. It's still the best machine to play on in a crowded university auditorium during a boring lecture.
I also just bought a PSP, which I use mainly to watch movies on the go and do remote play form my toilet, since free 802.11b hotspots don't seem to exist in Toronto.... I also have Patapon and Loco Roco for it, which are fucking awesome. I really, really really want Katamari for the PSP and Test Drive Unlimited, but those two are apparently very elusive beasts....
Apart from that, the PC occasionally gets fired up for month-long sleep-preventing bursts of Sim City 4 or Test-Drive Unlimited. Seriously, those games should be illegal. They're fucking addictive for me.

Nintendo Wii - Unique gaming experience that anyone in my family can enjoy.
Nintendo DS (Lite) - Supports both traditional and nontradtional gaming methods which make it perfect so when I want to play unique games and games that aren't very different fro classic gameplay.
Nintendo Gamecube - Not sure why I have this, but I've enjoyed it so far with Chibi Robo, SSBM, and a few others.
Sega Dreamcast - Was a Sega Fanboy, and I loved every game I have for this, especially the uniquely themed games Sega Created such as Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio just to name a few. *plays Skies of Arcadia for the 25th time*
Sega Saturn - Wanted to get this over PSX because I grew up on Sega Genesis, and I wanted Virtual On, Virtua Cop, Daytona, Sonic R, Sonic Jam, and some others. Still looking for some really good games on this to get hopefully.
Sega Game Gear - Got it cause it was the Sega handheld.
Sega Genesis - Semi-first console I had, and grew up on it. I play it to this day. Still have fun on it with when a friend comes over.
Atari - Wasn't really mine, never played it cause it didn't really work.

I hope you don't mind that I share my console history with you.
Well... lets see.... my first console was a NES when I was like 2 or 3 years old, then my parents bought me for Christmas a SNES with the Donkey Kong Country bundle (WHICH WAS AWESOME!), then an N64 with Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64 for my 6th birthday -1998-(AWESOME AGAIN), a Gamecube for Christmas the year it was released with SSBM and Luigi's Mansion -Man, I start to realize that I should thank my family more often- its now broken, but a friend lend his to me a year ago or so...
And my father bought me a PS2 when I finished 5th grade, which I didn't used until a year later (I was a Nintendo fanboy back then), but I actually used it more than my Gamecube which by the time was only good for SSBM in parties.
And now I bought a PS3 in my last birthday, thanks to the love I had for the PS2 and its franchises; also free online is a plus in my book.

@spiderweb1986: Wow, I'm really envious, not of the sheer mass of Gameboys you and your family have collected, but just the fact that everyone in your family plays together.
I'm the only one in my family with an interest in video games, and often feel shunned and somewhat guilty when playing them around my parent's place. It's most probably for that reason that I spend so much time on Kotaku, the sense of community is very strong here, and at once I feel like I belong. I just wish I knew more people in my day-to-day life that I could discuss/rave over games with...

Turbografx16 w/ CD, NeoGeo, 3DO, Intelivision and colecovision w/atari adaptor - XBOX, X-box 360 - PS1,2,3 I have most popular titles for each system. I love video games and what each system has and will bring to the industry. I right now will admit that after all the years I have been gaming that in my VERY VERY KNOWLEDGABLE history of video games and systems of course IMO the XBOx 360 is the best value for "VIDEOGAMING" not movies just video games beacuse the library is vast a game for everyone casual to hardcore and everything in between...American RPGs, JRPGs, tactical, Sandbox, Multiplayer, MMO's FFXI and soon Age of Conan. Just the best value for any true gamer. I buy gameing system to play games and not to watch movies on them but it doesn't hurt if you can do it but not needed. 360: Because it has a good selection of games and a strong online service, when it's not down. And dammit, I like Halo. Sue me.
Wii: Brawl, Twilight Princess, Galaxy, the empty promise of more games, and I just love the ease of Friend Codes. Nintendo sure knew what they were doing with that.
Crappy PC: Who can resist the allure of games from ten years ago. I'm telling you, this "Glide" thing is the future.
Xbox: Because MS stopped doing BC, and that's BS.
N64: Because Yoshi's Story won't play itself.

Virtual Boy: So I can say I have one when people ask me questions like this. Does that make me cool? No.

Original NES, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast - they are all packed away now but could be hooked up and played in 20 minutes if I get the jones.
A year ago I picked up a used Gamecube with a bunch of games so I could play the GC classics I missed out on (hello Metroid Prime!) and my kids could have some fun with it too (they really enjoy Sonic Heroes and Animal Crossing).
Then in Dec I sprung for the 360 once the new heat solution was widely distributed (I think I got an old one even though I specifically looked for a manufacture date after Aug 07 and made at FDOU - power supply still says 203W instead of in the hundreds like the new ones)
Been digging on the VF5, TF2, Lego Star Wars (TCS) and Culdcept Saga since (along with Castlevania, Puzzle Quest, Pacman CE and Carcassonne in XBLA.)

For consoles I have PS2, Xbox, Gamecube, and N64. None of the "next gen" consoles but I have a good gaming PC if that counts (8800 GT). I spend a lot of my time on it these days. For handhelds I have DS, GBA, and GBC with plans to get a PSP eventually.
I had a genesis with all the sonic games except bean machine. I sold it to get a PS1. I was such a stupid kid back then. I ended up selling the PS1 to get a PS2 but it was backwards compatible so I didn't care. I tried to get a Wii and ended up with 3 defective ones.
So overall... The consoles have lost their hold over me. I've played the Orange Box, Bioshock, and CoD 4 on both the PC and 360 including live. I think my PC was clearly the better choice.

Sega Cd. Racing Aces was one Hella fun game too bad the system got magnetized or i would still play this game.
GBA for shear fun. I think it was the best portable System nintendo realeased in my opinion. Still love Golden Sun on it.

It's kind of strange though, there have been no games that have interested me as of late and I 've been doing all my gaming on my PC and PSP, though I play SNES games on my PSP. The last game I completed was Bioshock, when it first came out. I haven't completed Mario Galaxy, Metal Slug Anthology, DMC4 (PS3), and a slew of PS2 games. I opnly own 3 games for the PS3, 2 games for the Wii and 10 games for the 360.

I got rid of my original NES, Genesis, and Snes that I purchased brand new with my birthday savings at one point in my foolish youth. Later on when I worked at a videogame store, I bought them all again (all used though and not "my" systems) and vowed to never sell my consoles/portables again.
They're not all hooked up since I moved to an apartment, but one day when they build tvs with an infinite hookups (no switches involved) or I get a house, I'll have a gaming/home theater room with ALL of my consoles hooked up.

N64 -> GCN -> PS3
Why did I go with the PS3? The pack-in game was better (R&C Future). That's it. I was undecided whether I wanted a 360 or a PS3 so I went with the bundle with the better game (IMO).

I own... an NES because it belonged to my parents (and Sesame Street taught me to read), an SNES because it was the first console they bought us wee ones, an N64 because I couldn't live without SM64, a Dreamcast because I bought it at a pawn shop and it seemed like a nifty investment, a Gamecube because at that point I was hooked on Nintendo, a PS2 because I wasn't THAT hooked on Nintendo, a Wii because I'm still entirely too hooked on Nintendo, and a 360 because I like to be able to say I'm not hooked on JUST Nintendo.
That followed some kind of pattern near the end, there.

I own a PS1,Dreamcast, original Xbox, PS2 and PS3.
My brothers bought all the consoles except the PS3 and I ended up keeping them to myself.
The PS3 was the first console I bought with my own money. I spent $600 on it because the PS2 was my favorite console and the PS3 seemed very promising. Memory card reader, wi-fi, blu ray player, pretty much full PS2 compatibility, easily upgradeable hard drive, and some of my favorite games.

First had a sega, found it cheap at the flea market.
Then GC because xbox sucked and at the time there were no PS2 games I was interested in.
Now, Wii because it was cheapest, I regret it though, I want a PS3... although brawl it pretty fun, not amazing though.

Wii (as a "casual" gamer, thought it was just my style and got one at launch), PS3 (wanted a Blu-Ray player), 360 (heck, I had the other two, might as well get the third), Atari Flashback 2. I also have an o.g. Playstation 1, bought out of curiosity about its supposed amazing CD playback capabilities.

Primary: PC, because I'll always be a fan of easy mod access, indie games, and classing CRPGs.
Also: A PS3, because sometimes I want to play console games... and I prefer playing the Xbox 360's "exclusives" on the PC.
Previously had an SNES, n64, and GameCube because I was a Nintendo fanboy as a kid. I guess I still have them, but they're not hooked up.

I own a PS3,360 and a psp.I had a Wii that I sat in a launch line for,but I sold a few months ago. It's appeal just wore off and I never played it.Wish I had kept it for my girlfriends kids though.
I bought the 360 in a April 06 and it's still going strong.I really like the games and the service is good for what you pay for.
The PS3 and PSP..well I didn't have to pay for those.I enjoy the Blu ray and games like Warhawk,Resistance,Ratchet/Clank and Uncharted. The PSN will be getting better and better and with the introduction of HOME in the summer and XMB very soon I will enjoy it even more. Once the movie/music downloads go up on PSN,I imagine I'll enjoy it even more..and its free so you have that. Fortunately,Sept-Nov looks to be a great time for the PS3.Killzone2,Resistance 2,Socom,LBP and more are headed down the pike.
The PSP is fun and I enjoy Patapon,Starwars and some of the Metal Gear Games.

I own a Playstation(unused), a Playstation 2, Nintendo DS, and a Wii.
When I was little, I really wanted a Playstation, but I'm not sure why since I wasn't into video games that much, and I don't recall wanting a specific game. As for the PS2, I got that about a year after its initial release, and I wanted it because I enjoyed the first console, so I thought it was time to move up. Plus, my brother and I wanted some games for it. As for the Nintendo DS and Wii, well I got those recently since I wanted a portable system(my friends recommended the Nintendo DS since I was going to get a PSP) and with the Wii I could finally play all the games I wanted and play online with my friends, which doesn't work too well :(
I'd like to get a PS3 for Metal Gear Solid 4, but I have no idea as to how I will pay for it. Not to mention I'd also like to get a PSP at some point.

Personally, I've got a Wii, two GameCubes (one cost five bucks from a Salvation Army store and works for ten minutes at a time), a Dreamcast, an N64, a DS, a GBA, and a GBC.
If we open it to include my sister and parents, that brings an Atari 2600, multiple NES and Genesis consoles (none of which have one particular owner), a second DS and N64, another two GBAs, a PS2, a Game Gear, and the coupe de grace...
At least ten original Game Boys and Game Boy Pockets. Seriously. Over the years, we've kept picking them up from garage sales and thrift stores, to the point where we've probably got most of the Play It Loud line (anyone else remember that?) spread around my house. We've even still got our original brick GBA that we've had for close to fifteen years, and it still works despite the plastic screen falling off (and being glued back on) multiple times. My mom had her Tetris, my dad still loves Super Mario Land 2, and my sister and I have burned through more games than I can count. Everyone in my family plays games, but something about that little monochrome portable struck a chord with us.
Dear god, we're nerds. o_0

Currently:
NINTENDO WII - I thought there would be more games and it was the cheapest thing available. It doesn't really bother me since I didn't have trouble getting one. I got it during the first Black Friday of the Wii's release and waited from 2AM-7AM for absolutely no reason because no one else waited like I did. I'll never do that again.
PLAYSTATION 3 - I wanted a next generation system a year later and I went with the one I knew would get more Japanese-style games. I just hope Final Fantasy XIII and Versus XIII doesn't disappoint like Final Fantasy XII did.
XBOX 360 - Oops! A little over a month after buying a PS3 and I decide I also want a 360. I have been loving achievements and have not stopped playing my 360 since. JAN'08 to now and I'm at a 7000-ish gamerscore. I'm kinda getting the feeling I won't enjoy a lot of the future offerings though. I don't really care about FPS games that much.
I guess we're not listing handhelds but I also own a DS Lite and a PSP, which I spend plenty of time with at home.
I used to own the following consoles but have either given them away (because my parents told me to) or sold them... ATARI 2600, NES, SNES, N64, GB, GBP, GBC, GBA, DS, DS Lite (Onyx and Crystal), Game Gear, DC, PSX, PS One, PS2, PSP and Xbox.

CURRENTLY
PS2 - because it was just such a loyal console
Wii - next gen, and my latest Nintendo connection, in a long line of Nintendo systems
DS - the great quick fix games like Pokemon Pearl, plus all the multi-functionality *currently right now a back up alarm clock
PSP - bought it in China because the white psp (this was a series 1000) wasn't going to be out for about two years. curently addicted to Patapon, GoW *so far it's surpassed portable DS game time
GBA Advance/GBA SP - for Pokemon emerald and fire red trading, damn cable won't fit in the DS
MacBook - Umm, I tested Halo out and was addicted to VR Defender, waiting for Spore or possibly Half Life to appear *cringes at the thought of starting World of Warcraft
PAST (what I remember fondly)
SNES - Super Mario World, Mario Paint, Mortal Kombat
N64 - party/mini games, no Super Mario 64 (wasn't in to that)
PC - playing Test Drive 5 to completion

Back with my parents, we still have an NES, SNES, and GameCube (and an extra PS2). With me, however, I have my N64, PS2, Wii, GBA, and DSlite.
The current systems in my possession are because they suit my gaming needs. I grew up with gaming and have quite a library, but now I'm older and have less time to play. My main focus these days are pick-up-and-play games - games that require only a 10 minute commitment at best. Beyond that, I'm a lot more social than I was as a kid, so I want to play games with lots of people. The Wii is the perfect system for get-togethers with gamers and non-gamers alike. And if push comes to shove, I can always connect the PS2 for some Karaoke Revolution action. So, I have the systems I have because they require lesser time sinks, they're accessible to others in social situations, and overall I think they're the most versatile.
