World in Conflict 360/PS3 Impressions
Posted by Flynn De Marco at 8:00 PM on April 28, 2008
World in Conflict, the PC based Cold War conflict RTS is grinding its gears to make its first big debut on consoles. The developers are billing this tale of the Soviets invading Germany not as an expansion but more of an "enhancement" to the original. The game is essentially the same as the PC version with some key differences such as this time rather than being from the Soviets perspective, we get the US perspective. That makes up the majority of the story changes and other changes have been implemented in the controls and menu system.
RTSs are traditionally menu deep affairs much more suited to the many keys of a PC rather than the limited buttons of a game controller. From what I could see, the developers (Massive and Swordfish Manchester) seem to have done an admirable job in making the switch from PC to consoles and have completely reworked the control and menu system to suit console specific controllers. FPS like camera controls allow you to navigate quickly and easily and a tracking reticle makes it easy to pinpoint that specific enemy. A new, simpler menu interface adds to the ease by making it unnecessary to dig through layers of menus to find the one you want. You can also take to your Global War Room to compare your victories and battles with fellow players from around the world.
Whether or not World in Conflict will successfully make the jump from PC to consoles (where many others have failed) remains to be seen and I will let RTS aficionados be the ones to make the final judgment. My personal experience with such games is admittedly rather limited, but I do wonder how the depth of a PC menu system can be truly duplicated in a console version. It seems a herculean task but if they can pull it off it could mean more successful console RTSs in the future. Look for World in Conflict to made available for your PS3 and 360 later this year.

I got this off a friend and completed it last night. It's really good. The rendered cut scenes are amazing! Brought me back to the early 90's when I first played CnC and saw those pre-renderd scenes. The story's good but I rarely failed. There are tons of challenges and the weather effects are great. You can see the Clouds coming in as as now storm starts. Nuke Aftermath is just scary. You can pick it up for the PC on Amazon.com for 12-15 dollars. It's worth much more then that. Pick it up for the PC then decide weather you want the expansion or full 360 version when it comes out. Either way your getting a RTS game I'd only compare to COH (company of heros)

With how hectic and fast on the feet you gotta be with the PC version Im curious to see how they are going to deal with the controls. Since seriously that will totally make or break it, due to the levels of stress there is in the game. The last thing that needs to be added is stress by poor controls lol.

@pottsynz: I think it can be done right as long as the AI is tuned for it (unlike C & C 3 where the AI is the same as the PC version) and they make it easy to select individual units, which most console RTS games have not done so far.

@Shotmaker91: Just to anger people? I don't see a difference, seems like a silly thing to fret about.

As much as I love my 360, RTS games just scream for a mouse. I can handle FPS games going dual analog...I don't think I can make the same leap with RTS's

I'd say if you have the PC to play it, don't bother with the consoles. I made that mistake with C&C 3 just recently.

@MCWHAMMER: I was just joking. They ARE the SAME IMAGE. You see no difference because they are exactly the SAME thing. Flynn fancies himself a bit of a comedian.

Looks great and I loved the first game... but why the hell would anyone want to play as the Soviet Union invading Europe?

"The game is essentially the same as the PC version with some key differences such as this time rather than being from the Soviets perspective, we get the US perspective."
Other way around, champ. The PC original was an US/Nato campaign, this time it's the Soviets.
I hope the PC version has a cheap download version because I don't want to pay full price for a campaign that short (the original had 14 missions) and some gimmicky voice control that I won't be using anyway.
Online was fun for a while, but it gets tiresome when half of your team doesn't know how to play decently.

Im very much looking forward to getting this on my PS3. I have a pc that can run this... but probably not as good as my ps3 can. Im going to hope it supports mouse and keyboard, because that'd be supreme, otherwise, the primary reason? Because i can use my blu tooth headset. he he.

I'm confused. I played the PC game, and the campaign was waged on the side of the U.S. Did you get it backwards? If you get to play the role of the Soviets, then that will be pretty cool. Truthfully, I'd like to be able to play both sides, like in a Command & Conquer game.
