Xbox 360 Blu-ray Rumour Boomerangs Back
We know. We're actually a little sick of the Xbox 360 might get Blu-ray rumours, wait, no they aren't, too. But according to DigiTimes' industry sources, optical drive manufacturer Lite-On is developing a built-in Blu-ray for a future version of the Xbox 360 console. And Lite-On will begin shipping out the components in the second half of 2008.
Additional geek note: said future blu console will feature a 170-watt power supply. Exciting! We'd remind you again that this is all still considered rumour to the nth degree, but you're old pros by now.

@Spoony Bard: i most certainly did.
and you sir, did not.

Lite-on drives may have a failure rate even higher than that of 360s. April fool's.

It's nice to see that Kotaku is as tired of this rumor as we are. Personally, the idea of Microsoft fragmenting the 360 market with such drastic variations on the actual DVD player of the device simply isn't going to happen. It will be external, if anything, and will have to be for half the price of the PS3.

@-EDGE-: Indeed, how very patriotic.
JohnnytheFuture
Well this is a no brainer, I mean what are they going to put MGS4 on when it comes to the 360, a DVD? Pffft.
daschupa
On april 1st, any internet content is as true as content on /b/.

Whats with everyone hoping they make an internal BD drive for 360? Does everyone want to just go buy another one? The original idea that was talked about when they made the HD DVD drive was that if the format failed they could easily make an external BD player instead. They never planned to put games on HD disks and they won't be using BD for that either as it would alienate every 360 owner so far. (See second analog stick, PSP). All they will and should do is make a BD external drive that we can chain up with USB right into the back of our existing HD drives. Expecting more is just silly, in my view. This was all talked about when the HD drives came out, (The possibility of them having to switch to BD some day) and everyone over-blew it then too, asking Microsoft if they 'expected' the format to fail. I guess memories are pretty short here in the games biz.
GOLD5
I certainly would not be surprised for the external drive, but putting it internally would go against MS's mantra for the past two years of not packing in things people don't want and keeping the prices down.
Now that I think about it they could do a more media center focused version that does DVR. That would be plausible.
M.A.S.
Current Xboxes are already 170w. The source is bogus.

Just think if the 360 gets "Blu-Ray" it becomes the most American product EVER!
Hear me out…

See what I did there?
THAT JUST HAPPENED!
/sorry long day….
-EDGE-
hopefully it is an april fool... all we need is a blu-ray player with the ability to red ring on us... or will it blu-ring?

Man it must be expansive for MS to launch a new console every 3 or 4 years. Shows how badly they want to occupy a part of the market I guess.
They should once and for all build a good one that can get a longer life cycle.

BIG F*CKING MISTAKE.
If it's true.

lol man....i always get so freaking paranoid on April Fools Day and i honestly don't know which articles to trust.
LeLoi
Bullsh*t. PS3 is 380w (mainly due to the Blu-ray player). Standard 360s' (wtih HDMI) are 175w. It would be a miracle if the B-R edition 360 could even pull 280w. Nice attempt at an April Fools prank, but just too damn preposterous to be even taken into consideration. The 170w line gave it away.

@xbulletholes: Did you think of that witty retort all by yourself? I really must go and tell...
Oh, right. No one.
Spoony Bard
@Mr.SithNinja: I'm waiting for that article to pop up today too :P
TheHun
If Microsoft decides to go with an internal Blu-ray drive, it will be a different SKU with a higher cost ... and developers won't be able to use it for games. They can't fragment their user base by having some games on Blu-ray and some not.
I would not be surpised to see an add-on drive like the HD DVD drive, though.
jayntampa
Maybe for the Xbot 720, or 1040, or maybe 1040A, hahah... either way, MS is just a bit too late on the blu-ray bandwagon.
TheFaze
Ugh, not this again. Game rumors I can understand getting excited about, but this? Seriously, anyone who wants them some blu-ray can go buy a PS3 or stand alone player. It doesn't make any sense for MS to release a blu-ray add on and I don't think they would throw one in the box either. Maybe the next console, but not 2 years into this one's life cycle. I bet they are getting ready to drop prices again, why would they want to make the 360 MORE expensive this late in the game.
Gray665
@Mr.SithNinja: did you think of using the $ sign instead of an 's' all by yourself? wow, i really must go and tell the internet.

@Candlejack:
You may be surprised, unless you're directly measuring it with a "Power Angel" or something...

@Spoony Bard: Here's hoping that if it is true that M$ would allow people to send in their boxes for a drive upgrade. Oh, wait I forgot it is M$ we are talking about.....
Mr.SithNinja
Yeah, haha... and then all levels of XBL will be free as... "the icing on the cake!"

MGS4 ON THE 360 CONFIRMED!
Mr.SithNinja
It's not a joke. Kotaku doesn't usually do April Fool's, but decided to do that in the morning and be done with it.
Believe me, the article is real. It's been posted a bunch of places already, and honestly, would this be a good joke? No.
Spoony Bard
@Candlejack:The hdmi 360 is 175w I believe.
enewtabie
@Brine: i agree. i've been fooled before, so i won't believe anything i read until this day is over
kw4k
170W? Wow, that's little. My PC sucks about 350W all together, under load probably up to 400W. That's with just one HDD and two disc drives (DVD).
Candlejack
I pity the fool that believes this today. Fool.
DARTH_TIGRIS
It's a gag. If it said for a updated version of 360 now that would be true and not a future 360 like a xbox720 or whatever Redmond is working on down the line.
enewtabie
Happy Arbor Day!
EaGle1337
@NunianVonFuch: would you like fries with that?
AntiZERØ
The original source for this story uses "Next Generation" in ways that make the story confusing...
Justcrim
MS should just release the 360 successor.
ethic
If this is an April 1st gag its not very good. More "stay tuned for more in a few months" than "OMG!!!! FOOLED!". I'd like one even if external all the same.
NunianVonFuch
@Mit:
I wouldn't bet on it...things change and all that jazz.
enewtabie
DigiTimes shit and fell in it.
Sollus
I think it's relatively safe to say it will never be built-in to the console. Maybe, external (someday, certainly not this year), but not internal.
Mit
The Internet should declared null and void every April 1st.
Brine
Nth degree rumours are why I come here!
