Bonus Echochrome Levels Up For A Limited Time Only

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:00 PM on May 6, 2008

One of the best features about Sony's Echocrome is that it embraces user-generated content. Thing is, it only embraces it temporarily. Like a female praying mantis, coupling with a mate in a fit of passion before turning on it and devouring it whole. See, each new round of user-generated levels, when thrown up, replaces the last lot. So if you want to play the best homemade designs available, you've only got a limited time before they're gone. Gone forever. Not sure I really like this idea, since Echocrome isn't a game that really makes me want to rush through it.

WiiWare Games Will Be Up When They're Ready

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:00 PM on May 6, 2008

Got an idea which games will be available when WiiWare launches in the West? You don't. Because Nintendo haven't announced them. And from the sounds of it, won't ever be announcing them, telling Wired's Chris Kohler that as it stands, we may not be given advance warning as to what'll be appearing on the service. You'll wake up one day, check here/your Wii, and either there'll be new games, or there won't be. Oh, the suspense!

Blizzard Gets Its Digital Download On

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:00 PM on May 6, 2008

Last week, Blizzard launched a spiffy new website. The improvements run a little deeper than just a cosmetic touch-up, however: they've for the first time begun offering digital downloads of their games from their own online store. Warcraft III ($US20), Frozen Throne ($US20) and the Starcraft Anthology ($US15) are all available, with more (including Diablo) promised to appear later down the line.

Australian Post Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:00 PM on May 6, 2008

That Xbox 360 bike with control pad-themed dash we told you about last month is all done. Gaming PR In The Age Of Blogs

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:00 PM on May 6, 2008

Last week, Gamasutra ran an interview with Tom Ohle, vice president of PR & marketing for CD Projekt, creators of The Witcher. They obviously get to talking about games PR, and in particular some of the challenges facing a public relations team when deciding how to market a game. While I don't agree with many of their points (Ohle's or that of the interviewer), especially that "major blogs just don't really cover" the PC that much (we try to give it it's due whenever & wherever possible), it's still an interesting read, if only for Ohle's idea that even a site with just one reader's worth taking care of, because that's still one potential customer.

Happy Birthday, Wolfenstein

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 6:00 PM on May 6, 2008

Yes, other games came before it, but that's just nitpicking: for 99% of gamers, the first-person shooter genre kicked off with Wolfenstein 3D, which turned 16 yesterday. Happy birthday! Having played through the original only a few months ago, it's funny how, sixteen years on, I still had more fun with Wolfenstein than I do with most modern FPS games. Maybe that says something about the pure, arcade pleasures of the game. Or (more likely) it says something about the appeal of mowing down a mechanised Hitler with a chaingun while stuffing your face with plates of bbq chicken.

Get A Closer Look At WETA's Warthog

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:00 PM on May 6, 2008

The rate things are going, they may never make a Halo movie. So that short Neil Blomkamp put together last year may be as close as you get. And these shots of the Warthog used in that short may be as close as you get to it. Built by WETA, the guys behind the special effects for Lord of the Rings, it's crazy the amount of detail that went into a vehicle built not for a movie, or even a trailer, but a cheap concept pitch. Plenty of pics at the link below.

Stuck On GTA IV? Try These Cheats, You Cheater

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on May 6, 2008

GTA IV isn't the hardest game around, but hey, maybe you're not the best gamer around. Maybe you've got stubby thumbs. Maybe you can game, just can't be bothered, and want the ability to spawn sports cars in front of you just for kicks. If so, take note of the following GTA IV cheats, which will do things like restore Niko's health, give you all the game's weapons, change the weather and adjust your wanted level. ACHTUNG: these mess with your saved game files and can stop you earning achievements, so you might want to turn autosave to the "off" position if you want to safeguard your progress against a tragic corruption.

Flash Portal Turned Into Real Portal

Remember that 2D, Flash-based version of Portal from last year? Was pretty neat. Well, it's even neater in 3D. The same guys responsible for the original have translated all 40 levels into real Portal maps, which apparently add up to around 3.5 hours of Portal gameplay. And who are you to say no to 3.5 hours of new Portal gameplay?

Samba De Amigo To Get Paid DLC?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:00 PM on May 6, 2008

So the Wii can't do DLC, Harmonix & Neversoft? Maybe it can. It just needs to involve monkeys, and a couple of maracas. Pictured at left is the box art for the upcoming Wii version of classic Dreamcast rhythm title Samba De Amigo. If you squint real hard, and look in the top-left corner, you'll see a little red logo. That's the Wii's new "Pay To Play" logo, meaning that (if this isn't some strange Photoshopping mistake) at some stage, you'll be given the opportunity to pay more to play a little more. This being a music title probably means you'll be able to download new tracks/levels/monkeys/sombreros, but die-hards, don't let me stop you from dreaming it'll be a patch to allow Dreamcast maraca use.

Kotaku Australia Originals: Super GTA IV News Mode Activated

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:30 PM on May 6, 2008

ausglobe_01.jpgDid anything else happen in gaming last month other than Grand Theft Auto IV? Going over our original posts, it's hard to believe otherwise.

But believe we will.

Firstly, Mario Kart Wii debuted, along with its rather pricey plastic wheel "controller". Plans were made to bring a modified Dark Sector to our shores. Except those plans didn't work out. We put together a list of options on how to fight for an R18+ rating for video games, and some dude's girlfriend made us laugh while she tried to play Team Fortress 2.

As for GTA IV? *Deep breath* New Zealand got our edited version, confirmed by the NZ OFLC and a retailer; we got our hands on the Oz OFLC report; the street date was broken; Sony announced a PS3 bundle with the game; NZ was eligible for a Social Club comp, but Australia wasn't; everyone shared details of where they were importing GTA IV from and finally, we heard rumour upon rumour regarding the removed content in our version of GTA IV.

And that, friends, was April.

Dead Frontier: Survival Horror Zombie MMORPG

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:00 PM on May 6, 2008

deadfrontier.jpgZombies? In an MMORPG? That sounds like the sort of game I was born to play. Dead Frontier isn't such a bad name, either. There's no big developer or publisher behind it, just an independent group by the name of Jagged Blade Games.

The graphics remind me of 10tons' Crimsonland, which itself is worth a look if you cackle uncontrollably at the thought of killing swarms of monsters and collecting insane power-ups. It has co-op too.

Dead Frontier is currently in open beta and free, so there's no reason not to give it a go if you find the idea even a little bit interesting. The official website includes various Flash mini-games to provide an idea of how it works. It's not complex stuff, but it has made me think seriously about trying the beta.

Rumour: Sony Starting Online Games Mag?

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:40 PM on May 6, 2008

Sony Computer Entertainment America recently filed a trademark for a product named "Qore," but we don't expect to necessarily see a game coming to the PlayStation 3 or PSP with that name. Instead of the standard description "computer game software and video game software" services—as in the case with the recent filing for The Last Guy, a planned PlayStation Network release—the trademark filed for Qore protects against "computer services, namely, providing interactive online magazine and entertainment services in the field of video games."

Secret Agent Clank Dated

Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:00 PM on May 6, 2008

The Official PlayStation Blog takes us behind the scenes at the gala casino night event held last week in honour of the impending release of Ratchet's robot buddy's first solo adventure, Secret Agent Clank for the PSP. Members of the San Francisco-based media were shown a brief presentation on the game and allowed to get their paws on it before retring to the gambling tables for some good old-fashioned James Bond style blackjack action. While looking at photos of the gaming press get drunk and play cards is fascinating and all, the big news here is the release date for the game. Clank strikes out on his own on June 17th, and judging by the series' first foray onto the PSP, we're more than likely in for a hell of a good time, even if it is mostly Lombax free.

SR-388: The Bigger, Badder, Not A Metroid II Remake Fan Project

We shan't be lacking Metroid fan made games any time soon, it seems, as news of Von Richter's take on the adventures of Samus Aran looks to outdo "Project AM2R" in features and function. "SR-388," as it's known, boasts thousand of frames of animation, mini-games, new weapons, new mini-bosses and more, as it's more of a re-imagining than a graphical spit-shine. It looks just super and will hopefully give me, personally, the chance to revisit Planet SR-388 without having to compromise my strict graphics whore principles.

One of this summer's blockbuster attempts from Sierra and Radical Entertainment won't show its face until next year, as GameSpot reports Prototype has been delayed until some time in 2009. Why? According to Sierra reps, "we need more time to deliver the game the team initially set out to create."

Let's hope that the version of Prototype they initially set out to create actually includes the co-op multiplayer portion that was recently axed. We won't hold our breath on that one, as Radical is probably taking the extra six months to perfect hoodie physics or make the explosions more explosion-y.

The game based on the movie was also the top PSP and PS2 rental last week.

UK Mother Blames Nintendo For Badly-Behaved Kids

Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 5:20 AM on May 6, 2008

You guys should probably sit down for this.

At the UK Daily Mail, an exasperated mother has written an excoriating screed, blaming the Nintendo DS for making her children "turn into monsters":

Hand over the Nintendo and without any effort, you have a window of about two hours of peace, with your child doing something quietly constructive.

Except, it's not. What is constructive about playing football on a tiny screen, or washing a virtual dog, or watching a hideous pink pony trot around a pink palace decorated with shells?

Fighting to get onto the machine was bad enough, but it was worse when they were forcibly dragged from it.

Our Nintendo had taken the guise of a small but toxic drug which, little by little, was poisoning my children.

Targert: Terror Review: 90s Arcade Action

Posted by Brian Crecente at 3:00 AM on May 6, 2008

Target: Terror was always a game behind it's time. The light gun game featuring a terrorism theme and digitized bad guys came out in 2004, well after the blending of faux guns and digital graphics created a mini-light gun renaissance in arcades. Even the fact that Eugene Jarvis, the man behind Defender, was behind the game couldn't get it off the ground. I was a more than a little surprised to see that Konami had decided to lift this game, of all of the light gun titles, out of the arcade graveyard and try to give it new life on the Wii.

Light gun games on the Wii, though, are a match made in heaven, or at least they could be if someone ever finds the right match. Could Target: Terror be it?

Iron Man Movie Does Fine Despite GTA Release

Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on May 6, 2008

Following the poor box office performance for movies released around the time Halo 3 came out, the film industry began to blame the major game release for causing the poor attendance rather than the poor quality of their films. Insiders began to speculate that the release of Grand Theft Auto IV would have significant impact on this last weekend's big movie release, Marvel's Iron Man. Well consider the whole video game versus movies theory shot down, as Iron Man earned an estimated $US 104.3 million this weekend including preview showings on Thursday, the second-highest grossing opening weekend ever for a non-sequel behind Spider-Man. I did my part, seeing the film twice over the weekend, and enjoying it immensely both times. Considering the fact that Iron Man is much lower on the public's radar than Spider-Man and the fact that GTA was a multi-platform release compared to the 360-exclusive Halo 3, we can safely assume that poor movie performance can still be blamed on poor movies.

Here's Your Damn Pokémon Puzzle League

Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:20 AM on May 6, 2008

This week's update for the Wii Virtual Console brings what many consider to be the best Pokémon title for the Nintendo 64, which is extremely odd considering it's really just Tetris Attack (Panel de Pon) with Pokémon painted over it. Pokémon Puzzle League (1,000 Wii Points) features Ash, Brock, Misty, Pikachu, and all of their adorable little friends playing Tetris Attack. It's got story modes, continuous play, timed play, animated cutscenes, and even 3D puzzles to keep the gameplay from falling flat. If puzzles and Pokémon aren't your cup of tea you can always check out this week's other release, Renegade for the NES (500 Wii Points), a beat-em up with a unique story about a guy who has to fight his way through several street gangs to rescue his kidnapped girlfriend. Girlfriends were such a liability in the late 80s.
