I tend to stick fairly close to my own character in games. Not that I go around killing people IRL, but only do it when necessary in games. In GTAIV, I've also dated Michelle exclusively (haven't picked up a single hooker lol). IRL I've been faithful to the same girl for 20 years. Old habits are hard to break.

I will definitely experiment much more with the "consequences" of being a total sociopath on my 2nd play through though. ;)

@AuraHACK: Run to a part of the city that you're not supposed to enter yet and you will get 6 stars. For the 10 minutes or so I survived by hiding in the train station, I didn't encounter any tanks.

Like some people above, I think I've used cheats in most of the GTA games. But usually I'd get bored before the end (in GTA:SA I never even got into it) and use them to mix things up a bit.

But IMO GTA IV has a quality way beyond the previous games, and I'm nowhere near bored at 20% into the game. I've looked at some cheats, but only for hints on the best ways to make money, raise your respect, find out what sort of things there are to discover/unlock, etc, etc.

I suspect I will still be playing this in 6-12 months time. That is, unless L.A. Noir has the same sort of quality.

So far I haven't even explored all the possible ramifications of some stuff.
eg. How would Michelle take it if you robbed somebody when out on a date with her?

@ShaggE: I just shot the two guards and sprinted for a car.

GTAIV makes it too easy for any missions where chase is involved, there is always a high-powered vehicle right next to where the mission starts, be it a bike or a vehicle.

Also, the revamped FOS of the cops are just ridiculous, its too damn easy to lose them.

I remember the riot code. That was awesome! My friend and I would play multiplayer with riot mode on and attack everyone with samurai swords. Also there was this glitch when we activated invincibility and attacked each other with samurai swords we could chop off each others heads and walk around headless with blood spewing out. I couldn't stop laughing when we found that out.

I have to admit... The Snow Storm mission drove me to cheat. I simply had to use the Wanted Level code. But I promised myself that on my second playthrough, I'll finish The Snow Storm legitimately. Any other cheats I use in GTAIV will be solely for when I'm just screwing around.

I actually prefer games with cheats, in this case especially - later missions get extremely frustrating, and nowadays cheatcodes are a sign of quality. Even with all cheats turned on, you'd need your 20+ hours to finish GTA4 without missing much of the sidestories, while you'd waltz through most other recent A+++ titles in less than 3 hours.

When I was playing and wanted to have some fun, I noticed there was no Tank cheat and I was like.. "WTF". No tank cheat is like the core essence of GTA. Also the Annihilator doesn't have missiles? WTF again.

@mexfreak86: I don't see how these ones could corrupt the save files, but in earlier ones there were codes that gave all the peds guns, and made them homicidal maniacs, basically filling the game worth with hundreds of You. The only way to reverse these effects was to reload an old save, so if you saved over your only one, the game basically became broken as you couldn't turn them off, and you couldn't do any more missions.

I never understood why the cheats can corrupt save files. I remember on GTA:SA the games always warned me about saving the game when cheats were active because it could corrupt the save data. I just don't get it.

Here's a noncheat for ya:
I decided to date Lawyerchick (she looks a leetle like my ex ;__;)

And after a few dates she gives me the opportunity to call her and get rid of my wanted level!!

I blasted a cop in the face with my shotgun, right after the text message to try it out, had it go up to 4 stars and called her.. poof gone were the stars! :O

It's a big BIG pain in the ass having to whip out your phone and scrolling to that goddamn menu in the middle of a firefight though, especially because Niko doesn't know how to run and talk on the phone at the same time -_-

And to be extrasuperreallistic the wanted level takes a few seconds to disappear after the call, you know.. cuz of all that paper work, and she had to make a few calls of course, maybe ran into Betty from accounting, asking about the baby and little Billy.

Raise wanted level is very good cheat. I've used it in San Andreas when playing with my brother. Raise wanted level then check some place on the map and the mission is to get to that place alive. If he will make it then he will do same for me and so on...It can be quite fun but Im not sure if it can be that much fun in GTA4 since you have that fuckin police radar.

Besides, Im the only one that miss bicykles? I don't care that much about tanks but I loved jumping on bicycles in San Andreas. I hope that DLC will bring them back...with some crazy U ramps...

Honestly the game isn't that hard. A lot of failing missions just has to do with knowing exactly what to do, which usually takes only one retry. I understand that people enjoy the cheats, but, they definitely aren't a necessity to beating the game.

BTW, they REALLY need to just disable auto-aim for multiplayer completely. A person on foot shouldn't be able to take out a car of people in 5 seconds.

What I want is a 'cheat' or fix or patch, that when you retry a mission, you restart it at the point where you failed, e.g. the start of a race, etc. and not have to go through all the talking and driving before. It's a pure waste of time and it's a part of the GTA mission design that I think does not deserve the game to get full marks.

Man I want a pedestrians riot and pedestrians have weapons cheat. It made the game soooo much more challenging. I accidentally saved GTA3 with the codes in and went through half the game having to avoid old dears with RPG's.

I only bought the PS3 version to play with the cheats on and keep the 360 clean.

@ShaggE: I found the easiest way to beat that was to run out the back and jump in the water. There is a speed boat waiting. Just make sure you don't head towards the third island or your wanted level will jump to six stars. Even with that happening I managed to get away and beat the level.

I still don't know why people would use cheats in a game like this. It's so much more fun (to me, anyways) to actually have that sense of risk when you're standing on a roof shooting missiles at police helicopters.

I have personally cheated on all the GTA games, but that's because I find the fun of these games is just going on a 1 man crusade to create as much havoc as I can. That's pretty much the the only reason I play the GTA series. I'll play the story mode until I unlock the entire state/city/whatever it is at the time and then it's just about me goofing around with rocket launchers/shotguns/etc.

I think out of the 3D GTA games the only one I ever actually beat was GTA III and I did that like a week or two before San Andreas came out. I was only playing it because I was bored and I figured I might as well beat it.

GTA IV though is a completely different egg. I'm finding the Niko character pretty likeable and I actually want to see what happens in the story so I'm going to finish the game.

I think there was some misunderstanding of what the cheats in GTAs do to your game. The problem was never that your game got "corrupted," it just was recorded that you had cheated and you could no longer get 100% completion if I remember correctly. If you saved after that you were screwed so most people just used cheats to goof around and then went back to an earlier save to complete the game. Also, as has been mentioned, you had to reload to turn some cheats off.

@kylenalepa: Its not like any of the cheats make you invincible. You'll still have just as much fun shooting down helicopters and taking out police by using the cheats. I do wish they had alot more cheats that let me do more things. Personally I think they should add more cheats so that i can get even more of my moneys worth out of this game.

@thinlebowski: That's what makes the game more alive. If you just fast forward to your missions, it becomes more like a chore. I love the driving part of the game. Especially if you steal of those high powered cars. When I get tired of driving, I just call one of the cabs switch to cinematic camera view and enjoy the scenery. It's almost like watching a movie. This little subtle things is what separate this game to the rest. I kinda wish that after I complete a mission that I can replay it and watch it in the cinematic camera view.

@ShaggE: I was the same when I first did the mission, but I realize that if you just stay and try to kill all the cops that they'll just keep coming. The third time i just took off and got in the car and shook the cops off of me. I realize how easy the mission was after that. lame the most epic thing about the first gta3 liberty city was that it had an epic cheat. make everyone attack eachother (which was totally badass but to make things even more epic) give everyone weapons. Complete mayhem was the game gta3 was the name. i think thats how they tested that riot game that didnt do so hot but oh man that was fun. We'd all see who can last the longest without getting killed. Even when you spawned you see rockets and grenades flying by with the screen constantly shacking as if the city was at war. I was hoping harder then i ever hoped before that they would add this but there are fewer cheats then last game and the game before. :( good game nonetheless

Am I the only one who is having real trouble getting the new controls down in this game? Feel free to lay into me and tell me I'm an idiot, but I bet there are a couple others out there who get plugged by cops when they are right infront of your face and you want to hit them, but instead do nothing because you keep hitting fire.

What I did was, I brought an Infernus with me and parked it right in front of the front door after taking out he outside guards. It was still there after the cutscene and the SWAT team stormed in. I blew right past them.

That's OK... autosave is COMPLETELY broken on the 360 anyways... I've never been able to leave mine on as it always overwrites my saves with one that's dozens of hours old, a save from when I was 2-4 missions into the game. Thanks R*... but I can't use autosave anyways... (oh, and as an update R* has NO FIX when I call support. The reps seem to think I'm making it up...)

I've used the weapons cheat a few times while friends and I were just messing around. I hadn't played through the story yet, and we wanted to cause some general chaos, so.. Hey, free RPG, seemed like a good time.

But I always turned off the auto-save first and then turned it off without saving to be sure. I don't cheat for story mode.

Anyway, we found that unlike previous GTAs, we had a lot more fun causing mayhem without any cheats. It was really kind of boring to just shoot RPGs at cops. Much more fun to start with a knife and work your way up.

Cheats in GTA IV are just kinda bland.

the restore health cheat also fix car's your in to their mint condition so you can use it if your car is on fire and about to explode. also to note for the first time someone actually tried to car jack ME in the game while outside safehouse lol thought that was cool yet weird

Just to add my own warning concerning "cheats" and saving.

I had to play through saints row twice because I "cheated".

I was near the end of the game, and there was a car that I had never seen once before. So I entered a code to spawn that car so I could check it out.

I drove the car around at high rates of speed, did some drifting, doughnuts, drivebys, then smashed it up good and ditched the wreckage.

Then I did a few missions, and saved my game for the night.

BIG MISTAKE

The save file was tainted and I couldn't unlock any more achievements using that save file, even after beating the game.

I had to start a new game from scratch (I only had 1 save file) and play through and beat the game again. Thankfully, things were a lot easier the second time around (I did all of the pimp missions first to get the pimp cane, which made 90% of the missions cakewalks).

Yeah, if you think you don't need cheats to beat this game, then try replaying a few of the more challenging missions. Between a broken auto-aiming system, and a robotic duck-and-cover system, cheats are welcomed. I beat the game without cheating, and it would've been a hell of a lot easier if the game play worked like it should.

@ShaggE: That one took me a few (15) tries, but I didn't want to disable achievements (since the game saves after every mission). I did use a few cheats, but after finding out that playing online with a few friends in party mode was just as fun, I stopped.
And, I think that this new GTA has taken a more realistic and serious form. You cant have a jetpack, tank, flying cars, and crazy pedestrians because they want it to have a more serious feel. The previous GTAs (especially san andreas) were funny because of the outrageous "holy shit WTF!" moments. GTA 4 has a darker, more serious, yet still funny theme.
Also, it seems to me that GTA 4 is actually sayng drugs are bad, instead of good, since there are a ton of charachters that have addictions, and niko always passes up on these things after seenig how f**ed up these people are.

Maybe it's just because this is my first GTA (or because my gaming skills aren't "elite," per se), but I'm struggling with a lot of the missions. Particularly ones where you have to chase down and kill someone, like Ruff Rider (I probably failed that one 20 times). The Snow Storm seemed impossible until I found the speedboat.

I think part of it, like someone else mentioned, is that the auto-aim sucks for enemies right in front of your face. There'll often be some jerk right in front of me plugging me full of holes, but it just won't let me shoot him. And the blind-fire option doesn't seem to work like it should.

Anyway, I'm not using cheats because the only time I can seem to make myself stop playing is when I get fed up trying to beat a mission...

Okay, ive read through most all of the comments and haven't found the answer im looking for. I am about 80% through the game. I have not used a single cheat yet. I've looked at the upcoming missions and I can tell that a few are going to be a pain. I will be tempted to use the health cheat. What I don't get is, how can the Restore health cheat disable more achievements then the restore and AND ammunition which only disables 1 achievement. My question is this, if I am stuck on a mission and just CANT resist and put in the restore health cheat, will that disable me from beating the game? Will it show up on my statistics that i cheated? The only achievement that the restore health and ammunition disables from what ive read is the Clean up the mean Streets achievement. If getting that achievement involved getting a cop car and taking out 20 criminals and I get that achievement then the only other thing that using that cheat would effect would be showing up on my stats? Usually if im going to go for achievements in the game, i would be going to unlock ALL achievements, and there is already one a achievement that i know I'll never unlock, and thats the kill a GTA4 dev in a multiplayer game. So what im asking is, if i use the restore health cheat while still trying to beat the game, will it disable me from beating the game and will it show up in the stats that i cheated?
