180-Degree Gaming With The J-Dome
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on May 12, 2008
This is John Nilsson's J-Dome, a projector-based screen that's the result of some nifty ideas concerning field of vision. Wrapped around you like a lowered umbrella, the J-Dome promises to give the player a whopping 180-degree field of vision, as opposed to the standard 15-20 degrees you enjoy from a flatscreen monitor/TV, meaning you'll be able to see stuff in the corner of your eye without having to actually point you character in that direction. While the screen itself is a little dorky, the experience looks mighty promising, and is expected to cost around $US 150-$US 200 (excluding projector, obviously). Vid's after the jump if you'd like to see exactly how it works. Those not interested will still enjoy Nilsson's salesmanship.

Why would I want to stand up to play my games? Or watch them through fish-eye-o-vision? Having my legs get tired is not immersive :<
Also, hurrah for the irony of "don't stand still".

I'm getting the case of Deja Vu... Oh well. But the idea and concept is nice, but that blur would kill me during play, plus projectors to my eyes, always have this weird transparency to it... Gaming would be un-enjoyable so. But something more feasible I suppose is to find five CRT's (Because of price) and do it that way.

I saw a version of this in use at a usability and technical interface conference over 5 years ago. It was pretty nifty but the lack of resolution of the projector coupled with the modification of the display output to fit the screen profile made it little more than an amusing quirk.

Immersive? Ha! I laugh mockingly at your "immersion".
Check this shit out :)
Pretty extreme, the CAVE system has projected 270 degree vision in both axes.
That said, it requires a commitment on the level of "I am going to dedicate 15 cubic metres of empty space in my home to gaming.". The 180 degree pc umbrella requires a projector, and a place to mount the projector, and the throw distance, and place to stand for the user, and safe easement to and from said gaming space... adding up... the CAVE doesn't look so crazy. Hehehe

180 degrees? from the look of it, its more like 150-170 degrees, the only way to get 180 is to stick your head uncomfortably into the dome, seems like to close for comfort, and the position you have to play in looks funny

First of all he should get a professional PR person, at least if he really wants to sell this product. As far as the product goes it just feels stressful. Looks ugly, doesn't fit in my living room, I prefer to sit or lay in bed while playing and... well, the picture isn't made for stretching out like that is it? It must look like shit up close.

I forgive DICE, but when you are going to promote your product please use a person that can speak good English and don't look to awful.
If you don't have anyone in your team that fulfill those requirements, then hire some one. The money will be a good investment...

Isn't this kind of stupid when we can just use headset goggles to simulate virtual reality. There are already several on the market for thousands of dollars and they give you the same range of vision in addition to making the screen appear much much larger. To me, that seems FAR more immersive than staring at the J-Dome could ever be. Props though for "welcome to...the J-dome show..case."

I used this thing a few years ago at a game expo and conference in Raleigh. Virtual Heroes had this thing set up showcasing some space-mars-landing-simulation-thing, and I didn't really find it that interesting then. I actually found myself wishing for a flat screen. I think I'll pass on this one.

2D image projected on a convexed projection surface = fish eye view.
Everything around the edges of the image are stretched.
I remember seeing something posted on this site about a 360 degree screen that used several projectors. You stood in the middle and used a wiimote controller. The person playing turned they're body around and aimed with the controller.
It was done by some people in Europe and I can't remember the name of product, it looked far superior to the J-Dome.

I hate how the yay-dome just looks like it's stretched from the middle outwards. That would annoy me to no end. I don't care if I can see a tiny bit extra on the ends of the things. If they're stretched out like that, I'd rather just use that projector to project that image flat.

Ugg do not want. The problem with most of these devices is they require large amounts of space that few people actually have.
Secondly, the tech is no better than a HD projection screen. The dome-shape is a gimmick.

If you could get a game dev to produce a game image that was pre-distorted with a fisheye effect, this could actually be pretty good. In other words, the initial image would then be "un-distorted" by being projected onto a curved surface. You can see this effect in operation on the new Simpsons Ride at Universal studios theme park, for example. The projected image is CG, rendered pre-distorted, and projected onto a dome.
A big problem with the "J-Dome" is also that the image is quite close to the face of the player. It would be more effective if the dome were farther away, as in the case of the motion sim ride mentioned earlier.
Front projection, rather than rear, would give a potentially sharper, clearer image as well.
This product as shown needs more work before it is ready for consumers.

@Felch:
This comment and all the others of its ilk are just plain asinine. While the device may be dorky (I dunno, I'd give it a go I think), if you'd bothered to do your research you'd find that the game FOV is changed to 180ยบ before projection. If you've tried to play that on a flat screen monitor you'd understand why the dome is required.

(Here, I'll repost what I wrote when this was posted over at Gizmodo:)
Meh, unless it actually improves your vision of the game, then it's useless. He's just stretching the default view out to accomodate 180 degrees of vision rather than adding extra screen space to the viewable area and stretching that out. This system would actually give you a disadvantage because you'd be seeing less of the game in focus.
It's a nice concept, but it just needs a bit more polishing.

Posted 11:34 AM 13/5/08
This seems fishy. It looks like he's intentionally cropping out that man on the right in his example in order to show supposedly how much more his special dome shows. Wouldn't current games just be projected to stretch around it anyway? If so, he'll have to wait until developers decide to start designing games specifically for use with his invention.
Also, it's irritating enough dealing with games that use a minor fish-eye effect to give you a wider field of vision without making everything as stretched & wonky as on that dome.

@hogarth1: Bingo, this is the only practical application for this kind of setup. Otherwise the result is what you see in the video. Sure, you get the sensation that you're "in the game" - the downside is that 2/3rds of it is now stretched beyond recognition in your periphery.
I think that if any one tech brings us a little bit closer in gaming, it'll be a lightly curved surface with the addition of accurate eye tracking. That way you're still presented with the same visual footprint, but if you look to the corners your camera will pan a bit. While still facing the same direction in the game, it would allow you to be able to see your squadmate to the left without having to rotate around completely and lose your movement bearing/weapon aim. Just make sure to add a slight delay factor, so you don't get spastic panning. Glance at a corner for a second or so and the POV camera will follow your lead, or include it as an assignable button so it only pans when you trigger it.
