Left 4 Dead Hands-On Impressions
Posted by Brian Crecente at 8:05 AM on May 14, 2008
Valve was on hand at last night's EA festivities to give attendees a chance to check out zombie survival shooter Left 4 Dead. In the game you play as one of four characters co-oping through a city ravaged with a plague of zombies, trying to shoot, melee and run your way from safe room to safe room.
The game starts off with your and three other players on a roof top behind a locked door. A nearby table is stocked with a selection of weapons, ammo and health packs. In the map we played, the first room had molotov cocktails, submachine guns, pistols and shotguns. Each player can equip a health pack, molotov cocktail, handgun and primary weapon: I went with the submachine gun.
Staying true to the zombie formula, your ammo is very limited, so survival isn't as much about clearing a room as getting through it.

After stocking up we unlocked the door, made our way down a set of stairs and were immediately attacked by a dozen or so zombies. The zombies in the game are a nice mix of the ambling Dawn of the Dead variety and the liquid fast 28 Days Later breed. The dead tend to stand around, mill in corners or, at times, crouch in pockets of shadow. Initially when they spot you they seem slow, turning to track you, but most of them got fast once they lock on and either run at you or, on occasion, actually leap across a room at you.
While there's a nice mix of zombie animation it became clear early on that certain zombies behave certain ways. Some can be killed with a single shot, others take a full clip to knock down. Some hide, others mil, some bound around the map, others come straight at you.
After pushing our way through that first home and onto the streets we wandered around the nearly empty city looking for our way out. In the game, the object is to make it from safe room to safe room, taking the time to replenish ammo and health, on your way to an evacuation point.
In my first run through with the game, I made it to the streets before my firs-person shooter habits got the best of me and I made the mistake of separating from my team to see if we left any of the undead, not dead. After taking out a straggler or two I realised I was on my own and started to hot-foot it back to the team. Too late. Within minutes the once empty city was crawling with zombies and my last moments were spent standing in the bed of a pick-up truck trying desperately to shoot down the sea of zombies surrounding me with a quickly diminishing supply of ammo.
Take-two went much better, knowing that we had to stick together and not dally, we managed to make it to the second safe room with almost now losses, though one of our party was taken down in the room itself before I managed to close the steel door and drop a metal bar across it.
After replenishing we made our way into a warehouse where the doors and windows blew open and zombies began to pour in. The seemingly insurmountable odds were evened a bit when one of the other gamers noticed a room blocked off by a wall of sand bags and a mounted machine gun. The three of us stayed in the room fighting off the zombies as the flooded the warehouse. At one point I found a gas can and threw it on the other side of the sand bags. Shooting it, created a wall of flames which slowed the zombie attack, but didn't stop it.
Finally we were picked off until it was just me, once more cornered and desperately trying to put off the inevitable death at the undead hands of countless zombies.
The game's graphics were amazing, pushing the Source Engine to it's limits and delivering plenty of startling moments. The one off-putting thing I noticed was the gallons of blood that pour from you after an attack, it looked like, at times, that characters had a hose attached to their head or stomach, so much blood was pouring out.
There are an interesting mix of zombies in the game including a slow, fat thing that projectile vomits blood on you and explodes in a geyser of gore when you shoot them.
The balance of the game perfectly matches the feel of most zombie movies and we tended to die when we strayed from the unspoken rules of a zombie flick. Never separate, never slow down, and conserve your ammo.

OMG I love a good co-op game, this one seems like it'll be the most epic in a while.. People will have to work together, and it'll also give you that thrill of almost getting killed!! I'm not much of a zombie man myself, but when there is more than one person involved you can always count me in =D!
Btw when is this coming out?!!!?!?

@Clarke: you can push zombies away with any gun once they get close enough i think, you can knock over a whole group to give you time to kill them or run away, but i haven't seen anything about melee attacks that actually damage/kill zombies.
@lostalaska: it was originally due out early 2007, the latest date is 'autumn 2008' but i wouldn't be surprised if it ended up coming out closer to christmas or even next spring.

I love the sound of this game, but it just reminds me that I need to find more friends who are good at FPS. Or improve the skills of the friends I have.
And despite the fact that I'm sure it's beautiful, this all just reminds me that 4 player split-screen gaming is slowly dying.

One thing that got me from some of the earlier videos is that the game... well, "handled" like Half Life. The jumping, moving, etc seemed way too agile if you want it to mimic a more realistic environment. The video had the characters jumping up on boxes and onto trains in typical first person perspective. But the movement just didn't fit the image. Felt like Gordon Freeman in his biosuit, not 4 regular people running away from zombies.

My red flags right now include:
- linear progression
- severely limited resources, as in, a world without Wal-Mart
- no vehicles
- no rooftop access
- no emergent ability to barricade
- 4 person group hook an enforced focus rather than an amusing optional functionality
- no ability to have more than 4 people co-exist in a shared on-line map as parts of different groups or teams
- can't play a zombie, or become a zombie once bitten
- no trust / distrust human interaction mechanics
I'm hoping these worries aren't founded, simply reactions to details not written up or yet revealed.
Will probably be a hoot, but won't be the "be all end all" answer to my zombie dream game, the one I'd like to someday help create.

@OT79: PS3 has a mouse so I can see it working. Though am a 360 shill, my lament comes from the fact that the aiming would have worked well with the pointer control as this game moves fast (that's certainly an understatement) and I just can't imagine it working with a regular controller and at this point... no 3mote news.

@emonxie:
Sorry, but I gota poke a couple holes here
1.) [Lineage Progression] It's supposed to be a linear get from point A to extraction point B.
2.) [Limited Resources] Since they're going for a horror type game, if the players had unlimited ammo they wouldn't need to play smart or be scared in any way.
3.) [Vehicles] Got me there, vehicles would be cool, however, it would point back to part 2 where they are aiming for keeping it scary and on-your-toes type gameplay
4.)[Rooftops] Pretty sure they have rooftop access. Maybe not on all the buildings, but that would be a lot of work (though cool) however, the aim once again is to get out of the buildings and to the safe zones.
5.) [Barricade] Don't quote me, but I think you can barricade doors as well as locking them, making it harder for the zombies to get through, yet you don't want to stay barricaded for long, because you are trying to make it to an extraction point.
6.) [4 people co-op]The game is being designed so it focuses on co-op, not just making it a liability.
7.) [4 people per server] The way the game is set up right now is that you can either have 4 players and 4 AI boss infected, or 4 players and 4 Boss (zombies). Also, there will be player made maps that can be distributed and played on with other people. The cap of players per level right now is 8, 4 on both sides
8.) [can't play zombies] You can play a zombie, they are called boss infected, including the Smoker who uses it's tongue like a noose as well as creating smoke to blind players and hide itself, the hunter who can climb buildings and become invisible if it stays still, the boomer who basically explodes when shot, taking other players with it, and can puke on the player, bringing all the infected to that player, and the Tank who can lift cars and concrete out of the ground to throw at players.
9.) [distrust] Friendly fire is always on, though you do get negative points for being an asshole, which is recorded server-wide so people know you like being an asshole (not you specifically). Once again, the game is focusing on co-op play as an essential part of the gameplay, so if you dont' have trust, you probably wont' make it very far.
Don't want to be mean, just I've been following this for a while now and trying to share my info.

@emonxie: it's no more linear than most other games. they've said there will be multiple ways to complete each map with different routes, and the AI director which is something no other game has ever had before is completely procedural, so every game will be completely different, partially based on how the players themselves play the game.

@boopadoo: A new vid is up on GT.
They answered one of your (and my) long-standing questions. There are two modes: Survivor Only and Deathmatch.
Survivor Only: 1-4 Humans/bots vs. Zombies & Zombie Bosses (all bots)
Deathmatch: 1-4 Humans/bots vs. Zombies (bots) & 1-4 Human-controlled Zombie Bosses
In both modes, when a survivor dies they can only "respawn" at the next checkpoint. If just one survivor makes it, everyone makes it.
In Deathmatch, the (up to) four humans on Team Zombie randomly spawn as zombie bosses, directed by the AI. I guess they just need to make use of what they get. This PR guy says the zombie bosses are perfect for griefers. I wouldn't mind being on that team often. :)
Also great, he says it's drop-in drop-out. I hope he's talking about 360. TF2 on 360 was (and still is) an online mess.

If you leave the orange box (360) on the menu screen long enough, a trailer for L4D comes on

I'll only consider the 360 version if there is 4 player splitscreen, otherwise it's Steam for me.

It's hard to see this as a Source Engine game, it looks so different from the rest. Ingame it will probably have a button sound here or there that will remind me ;)

@boopadoo: What the fuck? I try to help and you call me a douchebag?
You've got to be kidding.
My point was information on this game has been available for a long time now, and a lot of the questions being asked in this post have been long since answered, including the ones you asked.
"So if you become a zombie, can you become a zombie boss, like in Land of the Dead or Stubbs the Zombie?"
That's half of the gameplay. Four survivors, four zombie bosses. I mean, come on... that was probably revealed in the initial press release. Don't be fucking lazy, and don't use a single website/article for all your gaming information. If you're truly interested in a game, look it up. Find out from several sources how it plays and what its features are.

This had better have offline multi-player. Or I'll be pissed. Or sad, at least...
"The one off-putting thing I noticed was the gallons of blood that pour from you after an attack, it looked like, at times, that characters had a hose attached to their head or stomach, so much blood was pouring out."
See, that's exactly what I look for in a zombie movie.

@Xiedo: Thanks for the info!
@Bluecell: See how Xiedo handled that? Classy.
"For all the people who have questions, there's plenty of information out there if you just google it. Kotaku hasn't posted much about it, but plenty of other sites have. There's tons of video footage as well."
Try it; read it out loud. See? You sound like a know-it-all without offering anything constructive to the discussion. That is the hallmark of douchebagness.
...and another thing. "Boss zombie" in L4D only refers to the user-controlled zombie classes, not a smart zombie, like in Land of the Dead and Stubbs the Zombie like I was referring to, so that's two on you.
