Microsoft: Oops, We Forgot About The Wii In Worldwide Sales
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:00 AM on May 15, 2008
Microsoft totally won the race to 10 million in the U.S. That's for damn sure. But worldwide? They're not exactly the leader in the "current-generation console" race, at least not if you include the Wii as a "current-generation console." They may have an impressive Xbox Live user base, but 19 million Xbox 360s sold does not a current gen leader make.
When contacted for clarification about the 360's numbers versus the Wii's—which stood at 24.5 million worldwide as of March 31, according to Nintendo financials—Microsoft reps told us that "Xbox 360 has the largest global install base of any current gen high definition gaming console." That emphasis? Mine. They also apologised for any confusion this may have caused.
Hey, it happens. Even I forget I have a Wii sometimes and it's right there, mere metres from my face.

This made me giggle. It's like saying, "I bake the most amazing cakes that anyone has ever made in my kitchen," or "I am the smartest person in the entire world who also happens to be sitting in this chair."
Microsoft, just... just pat yourself on the back there. Yeah, does that feel good? There you go. I see no real harm in this, but really, the wang waving is all sort of silly, isn't it? Can't they all just do their thing and try their best, independent of what everyone else is doing?

@Kotaku: "Microsoft totally won the race to 10 million in the U.S. That's for damn sure."
No they bloody didn't. According to their own press release, Xbox 360 had sold 9.9 million units in America by 31st march. The Wii had sold 10.61 units in America by 31st march. It's all there on wikipedia, and yes there's a bloody reference.
Honestly, they're just correcting one lie and re-iterating another.

@EnigmaNemesis: I won't argue there, even though Nintendo has made quite a few innovations, it does take it pretty slow to catch-up in technologies.
But as I've always said, the more competition the better for the industry, there is more effort put into things and there is more variety for everyone.

@yanipheonu:
Can you explain how they are getting their ass kicked?
They are still selling systems.
Still getting exclusives.
Still getting the most games sold per system (attach rate).
Still selling tons of software with record sales, making tons of money.
Still having lots of games developed for it.
etc etc etc
The only "ass kicked" scenarios, are that of fantard banter on message boards. It sure isnt effecting MSFT negatively financially or support wise by developers.

I must be in the minority but I don't really see anything wrong with what they've said. The 360 really isn't competing against the Wii because they're targeting different demographics. The 360 is going after the traditional, more hard-core gaming community that seems to have a focus on more mature and fast paced games that are pixel pushers. The Wii is taking a different route by focusing on casual gamers with more pick up and play games.
This is more of a personal observation and doesn't really have any solid facts behind it (just like my statements above) but I don't see many people deciding between a Wii and a 360/PS3, I see people picking it up because they only care about Nintendo games/products or already have a "HD" console.

I wonder ... how many x360 gamers play it on a HDTV/monitor, and same thing about PS3 gamers. I know for sure that most PS3 customers know they'll soon buy an HDTV, or get one together with the PS3. I lasted only 1 week without a widescreen monitor for the PS3 :).

I am just playing devil's advocate here.
Consoles have been always about graphical enhancements, etc. Not so much storage medium. Nintendo was especially guilty of this. Since now, that Nintendo chooses not to, since it would cost them more than they could bare to compete to do so, it is all of a sudden acceptable. When at one time, it was not.
Is all.

Also, I don't see how anyone could forget about the Wii. For me, the only time I play the 360 is when friends come over for rock band/GH (though I concede it has many more "good games" than the Wii...it's just that there hasn't been a new one for me this year) and I've owned the PS3 for a year and I still don't own a game for it (it's a helluva good BR/DVD player, though.

@EnigmaNemesis:
They are still losing money hand over fist though. Only one quarter have they made a profit on the xbox and that was due to the Halo 2 release.
As for attach rate the Wii software worldwide has been outselling PS3 and Xbox 360 software these past few months.
Last round of attach figures had the wii ahead of the ps3 and nearly close to the xbox 360 rate. The wii attach rate is constantly growing while the xbox 360 attach rate has remained the same.
As for exclusives the wii has had a bunch recently announced.
Wii hardware and software sales are increasing while the xbox 360 has remained the same. Even in Japan where the PS3 is the cheapest the wii is outselling it ten to one on a weekly basis.
Wii games are also making sales record. How many million selling games does the xbox 360 have worldwide? The wii has of March 2008 26 million selling titles including third party.
Total wii lifetime software sales as of March 2008 is 148,440,000. How many games have been sold for the xbox 360 worldwide?

@EnigmaNemesis: I'm going to call that lies and madness. When christmas rolls around and parents are searching for "whatever the newfangled gaming gadget is this year" They're going to have a choice between wii, 360 and PS3 and since the wii is cheapest system and also has the most kid friendly(read "exploiting") games on the shelf, which one do you think they're gonna buy? I'd say that affects the sales of the other two pretty drastically. Imagine the holiday sales of the 360 and ps3 if the wii didn't exist. That goes for birthdays too. Nintendo is reaching a new audience, but that doesn't mean they wont take sales away from the 360 PS3 too.

You're wrong, and you don't know what "competition" means.
Blue ocean strategy isn't about "not competing," it's about making competition unable to compete back. It's about making them irrelevant. That was what Nintendo was trying to get at. Yes, Nintendo is still competing for hardcore gamers. Plenty of hardcore gamers are buying their system. But they're also competing for all three tiers of noncustomers, which is something Sony and Microsoft can't hope to compete with at the current time.

Xbox 360: 6.43
Wii: 4.78
PS3: 4.13
Things to note...the Wii has sold more software than any other console (121 million to the 360's 120 million (PS3 picks up the rear at 51 million).
While we're at it Garo, I can't believe that you tried to pass off Oct 2007 numbers as currently applicable. I don't know if you're mistake was deliberate or not, but it is inexcusable to call someone out on a public forum and then use information that has been proven not to be applicable.
If you search for any article published after the financial results of the companies were released, you'll see that many sites have picked up the story that the Wii sells more games per console than the PS3.
It's a fact, and one that most of the world has accepted.
