Playboy Cyber Girl of the Year Is A True Player
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 5:20 AM on May 15, 2008
Do Playboy models love video games? On a first meeting with Jo Garcia, it'd be easy to levy scepticism. She's Playboy's "Cyber Girl Of The Year," beating out 52 weeks of rival models in an online-only competition. It just happens, Garcia said, that she's "really big into games."
We've seen many beautiful faces representing themselves as gamers, of course; booth babes, models and even amateur cam girls using photos of themselves posed suggestively with game paraphernalia to sell products or drive web hits. Because of this phenomenon, every time you see a so-called "hot gamer chick," the temptation is to assume she can't possibly be an actual gamer.
So is Jo Garcia the real deal? Full interview - and slightly NSFW pics - follow the jump.
"People don't understand that that the whole gaming world is not just for geeks, and assume that every person who plays video games is a geek that wears glasses," Garcia said. "It's a misnomer that needs to be put to rest."
Garcia told us she plays PC games and console titles, and owns both a Nintendo DS and a PSP. "It's something that I carry with me everywhere, like some people carry their iPods. It's the norm to me. I've had people send me messages like, 'oh you play video games?' And I'm like, 'why are you so surprised?"
"If I could get a job... being a game tester, I would do that all day long."
Wouldn't she get sick of it? "I don't think I would! I think that's one of those things... like you can eat chocolate all day long, and I can play video games all day and I'll get lost in them."
Her favourite games? "I love RPGs that tell stories," she said, listing the Final Fantasy series, Radiata Stories and the Xenosaga trilogy among her favourites.
"I like those games because they have a lot of sidequests," Garcia said. "You can build up your character doing small things. I'm 100 hours into FFXII and I'm not even done with the game yet. I'm doing all the hunts and the sidequests - I'm probably a third into the game and my guys are at level 60. I hold my characters high so when I go through the game it's a lot easier."
Yeah. But did she get the Zodiac Spear?
"I actually got the Zodiac Spear the first time I played it... you have to go through hell to get that spear, but I happened to get it the first time because someone told me about it. You can't open certain boxes, but then you have to go through and fight that nasty esper at the end... I died three times before I actually beat it."
Garcia talked quite a bit about RPGs, with an enthusiasm for detail familiar to fans of the genre. She's aware, though, that both gamers and non-gamers might have a hard time believing that a winning Playboy model defers social time with pals to focus on her game console - perhaps because of the manipulative way in which the game industry uses pretty girls, or pretty girls use the game industry, to earn appeal.
Garcia has seen plenty of models paid to act like game fans when they're not, but said it's not the models' fault. "Sex sells," she said. "The thing that most of the guys see... the women taking pictures with an Xbox to make it look more glamorous... you can't blame so much the models, but the companies. [The models] are being paid to be there, like at the game conventions. I know a lot of girls that shoot that kind of stuff, but it's not done on purpose."
"They're trying to make it appeal to men. And I think men need more... finessing than women do. You can do woman-based advertising on a product, but I think if a woman wants to play video games, she's going to buy it regardless of the ads," Garcia said.
"[A woman] thinks more when she makes a purchase, versus guys have to be lured in. So if you just give them something cheezy, that's going to be implanted in their head and they're going to be like, 'I have to buy Call of Duty 4.' Women don't need that finessing. You can give her a million-dollar advertisement, and if she doesn't want to buy it she's not going to buy it."
How, then, does Garcia think that women might dissolve some of the misconceptions around females and games? "I think just playing them," she said. "Even something as small as just doing this. I've shot Playboy stuff with my PSP, and people have asked if I really play video games, and I respond back. I think, just getting more involved in it, and doing more with it, and seeing where it goes."
By the way, according to Garcia, one of Hugh Hefner's favourite rooms at the Playboy Mansion has a broad museum of old arcade cabinets. After seeing it on her first tour, Garcia decided to spend her visit hanging out in there.
"I was in there probably the whole time I was at the house, because I wanted something to do," she said. "I almost finished the whole Donkey Kong while I was there."

I don't think we should be suprised about women playing video games anymore. There were quite a few girls at the recent Game On exhibition in Melbourne.

@Jnkzm4:
Ah the final boss from Xenogears... it's not hard, you have to get slightly lucky, and watch your fuel.
Vague I know but that's it in a nutt-shell.
And I actually enjoy the combat of FFXII

@boopadoo: Yeah anyone who wants to be a game tester because "I get to play games alllll day!" WRONG. Well, ok, you do, but it depends on the testing. When I tested (And actually I did happen to meet my gf there..wooh.) We played a game for an hour and passed it to our left. And the second time I got stuck with that absolutely shite superman game for the original xbox for EIGHT freakin hours.
If you get deeper into testing it gets worse. Imagine how pissed off all the Jade Empire test people were when they got removed from the end credits on the pc version. Testing is a thankless job that is absolutely no fun at all.

I don't care what she looks like, but I'm impressed by anyone else dorky enough to get the Zodiac Spear. Now if she kills Yiazmat too... (I literally spent more than ten hours on that fight, never wished for PS2 Achievements more.)
@byrc: If she's faking it, she's doing a damn impressive job. Name checking Radiata Stories, knowing about level grinding, and being aware of the painful process to get the Zodiac Spear in FF12 is pretty obscure...

I can't wait for the article that profiles women gamers who don't necessarily pose for Playboy. I'm not looking down on her love of gaming at all and I like her thoughts on the game advertising and wanting to people to see beyond her physical attributes.
I also understand the context of the story, that she was Cyber Girl of the Year. But I guess I would like to see a more diverse portrait of woman gamers and their place in the whole gaming culture. If you've done it before, I apologize.

Ads targeted to women might not have naked men plastered on them, but ask any grocery store chain about women and impulse purchases. Credit cards don't rack up $5000 of debt on magazines, cellulite cream and $19.95+S&H kitchen gadgets by themselves. We women are just "lured in," as she put it, by different values.

You mean the second to final boss? Right? Because there's no way for you to NOT beat the final boss...you must be talking about the one with four enemies and the core....the only way to beat it is to defeat all four of the enemies that orbit the core..and if you can't beat the four enemies you are not leveled enough [well, actually, your gears don't have the right parts or frames]

How in the world can she love Xenosaga? But love Final Fantasy XII? Maybe that's where someone can tell she's not for real, because I can't see how anyone who loves such a brilliant masterpiece as Xenosaga can love the crap that is FF XII. Maybe I should finally play Radiata Stories once and for all.

Moving swiftly past the fact that she is attractive and plays games, I found it a bit strange of her to be reducing all men to mindless ad fodder, and all women as some suave, experienced buyers.
I'm not really going to disagree for men, but I think the huge ad campaigns for the women by Nintendo (''Get your Mum a DS and brain training for Mothers day'', ''Look, a girl likes cute little animal crossing'', the masses of Wii Fit ads directed directly at women.)
I think she's just trying to displace the myth that girls don't do gaming, but I don't think she said it in the best way at all.
I for one am sick of the hideous gender divided advertising. I assume it must work, or they'd stop, but why do all cutesy games have to be advertised at women? They're just as capable at 'owning the noobs' as everyone else.
[Pun relating her, videogames, and unusual fetishes can be inserted here if you wish].
Oh look, I just did it anyway...

I know several hot chicks that play games. We play CoD4 and WoW all the time with them. They get WAY more shit for being gamers from other chicks than us guys do. Plus, they get hit on every 30 seconds when we are at tourneys and shit. To me, they are just clan mates, granted hot ones with nice cleavage, but I guarantee they would own your faces in CoD4.

DON'T DO IT! IT'S A TRAP!
First of all, you won't be getting RPGs all the time. Second, you'll have to deal with uncomfortable stares all day (and maybe the occasional unwanted "supervision"). Third, you'll make so much more money showing your hoo-hoo for one day than testers make in several years.

I've been in a test lab for almost 3 years, launched over half-a-dozen titles, and it isn't anything even remotely resembling "fun." @hikergirl: I don't know if gaming media is going that way as fast as you might hope. Your stereotypical gamer is naturally wary of posers, and hopes to find himself a true player to date, yet at the same time is fairly misogynistic, which makes them good targets for sex-based advertising. Most of the comments in this thread and basically every Jade Redmond thread prove that point. I just don't think most people who read this site would care about a normal-looking woman who plays video games, even though such an article is probably news worthy.
Speaking candidly, I would be glad that someone spent time and effort on such an article, but I couldn't guarantee you that I would read it. I think i'm typical of most gamers I know.

There are some out there. I don't remember which site it was but it a nice list of female leaders in the industry featuring the likes of Vivian Vance of the ESRB and Jade Raymond. Though I'm not completely sold on Jade just yet.
But you also have to remember men in the industry dwarf the amount of women. Kotaku is very good about writing about people who are important to in the industry. If haven't seen too many featuring women its because women in the industry aren't doing enough. Or like I said, there aren't simply enough.

...Seriously, though, it was just a couple of girls talking about games, which I think happens more often than lots of people realize.

@db2: mis·no·mer
-noun
1. a misapplied or inappropriate name or designation.
2. an error in naming a person or thing.
"every person who plays video games is a geek that wears glasses," Garcia said. "It's a misnomer that needs to be put to rest."
I think she was inferring that they get called a geek as well so I'm willing to let it slide. Isn't it fun to argue semantics?

@NunianVonFuch: Yeah, I took issue with her statements about that too. Shes basically saying if someone puts a naked girl next to a product we'll buy it. Which is stupid stereotyping. You're talking about a gender that'll buy anything just because....well because they're girls and we all know girls just buy everything, informed or not. (see I can do it too)
Now I'm off to buy a LowRider magazine....

Interesting article. Though what she says about men and women as regards what makes them buy games should probably be replaced with stupid people and informed. It's worth bearing in mind that she's going to see a lot of fellow models being hired to promote "guy-games" so is going to be more likely to think guys are influenced by that kinda crap. @Krondonian: Yeah, I thought that was bizarre as well. The only thing I can think of is that she's comparing the sort of men she meets (who jump all over themselves trying to do whatever she wants, in the vague hope that she'll have sex with them) with herself representing all women, and thereby concludes that 1.) all men will do anything a hot woman tells them to, even if it's just a print ad, and 2.) "All women" (i.e., herself) are not strongly affected by advertising.
She's never met me, that much is clear. Advertisers *hate* guys like me.

So, a person who plays video games is in general a geek? Apart from the pretty little playboy girls with fluffy little bunny ears?
I understand that Kotaku has to put up a Story every hour or something like that, but a story like this- Common people!
OK, so I know I'm only writing this because I'm a girl and I know I'm going to sound like a feminist writing this comment (even though I'm not) and I can understand it from a guys point of view ("omg, she's teh sex, wtf big tittiez how can she be a gamer. Omg omg kitties drool drool") its not everyday you see a girl like her, who's playing video games.
Well, on the contrary my friend. I see em all the time- and I know a few of them my self (no, I'm not going to include myself on that list because.. well.. I'm too modest I suppose.)
I assume that every guy that's a gamer looks like Jack Black the day after a bar round, 10 hours in the sauna all sweaty, with glasses, a 4 day beard and mayo on his fingers. Yes.. that's how I picture all of you guys here.
So If Kotaku made this exact same story about Brad Pitt or well, some other hottie (all to ones taste, some might even like my Jack Black version) would I go "like omg..hez soooo quteee omg, can he play video gamez ??! Where do I sign up for the marriage list??*drool drool*"? No, I would not. I would write this exact same post (with a few modifications ofc).
This is just gibberish if you may. Not news, not gossip or a leak.
This is simply a little "drool time" for the manly man guys that's reading Kotaku.
I would demand a similar post about a guy hottie, but then I would be undoing my point and the whole reason for this comment.
If you had posted that she was a huge collector of stamps, got turned on by doing Html coding or I don't know.. Was going to make her own evolutionary game- sure! That would be something different- something worth putting up. But the fact is that every one.. (Well, close to at least) plays video & computer games and its old news that that also includes pretty little girls.

@db2: maybe the misnomer is calling gamers geeks?
i had qualms before reading this article, but damn... i haven't even finished ff12.
i agree though, hopefully the whole misconception of gamers being geeks does need to be put to rest. i mean it's happening with computer-related careers now too right? games are a medium of entertainment just as much as movies or books are.

its interesting actually, as a woman whose worked on the periphery of the glamour/adult industry, i say if there is one section of society where youll find female gamers, thats it. the girls in that line of work tend to... have led lives that... make them appreciate a thing they can do alone. trying to put it delicately here, others with the experience will nod sagely right now. unfortunately, certain other widespread personality traits means your average kotaku reading geek isnt in with a shot, if they wanted one, which would be a sign of forgivable naivety. take it from me. youre better off.

Women don't buy things based off of campaigns and propaganda my ass, anything that says "lose weight without working", or "gets rid of wrinkles quick", many women snap it up in droves. I'm not dissing all women, some, most, are smarter than that, but shes making a generalization about men which is pretty biased.

Just because she plays video games doesn't mean she's any good at them. I hate women like this because they perpetuate the idea that a girl who plays video games has to be a goddamn model. OMG she's pretty and does stuff I like to do! So hawt. Screw that. I'm glad she's got a hobby but I'm just not impressed.
If anything I'm actually kind of angry that she even mentions that everyone who plays video games is supposed to be this four-eyed geek, even if she's just comparing herself to the stereotype. Can't we just be normal people who like to have fun, instead of sitting on the extreme ends and being a hottie gamer or a fucking dork?
If she went on about being on the internet I'm sure that would be something to drool over as well. Come back when you're a rocket scientist or something, not because you figured out how to play Donkey Kong.
