The Top 20 Women In Gaming
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:30 PM on May 22, 2008
No. Before you start, no. Whatever it was you were thinking, or were going to ask, no. It's not here. She's not here. Instead, Gamasutra's list of the top 20 women in gaming focuses on those with the biggest impact on the medium today, whether as developers, executives or even writers. The list is unranked (ie it doesn't count down from 20 to 1), and while it contains some pleasant surprises (Valve's Kim Swift, for example), there's sadly no room for my favourite, Zoë Mode. I don't care that she's not a real woman. She's still my favourite.

Amy Hennig should be on there. She was integral to the Legacy of Kain games and Uncharted, which were really, really good games with awesome stories.

@hikergirl: You're right, it might. But facts are facts unfortunately. There are a lot of things in this world that could be solved if people just thought before acting.

Hooray for Brenda Brathwaite! She's an amazing prof.
hikergirl, RhymePhile, sorry to say but get over it. Most of it is done tongue in cheek to begin with. Add that to the traditional stereotypical gamer (Yes, stereotypes come from somewhere.) And you'll get those types of comments. It's going to happen, it will never go away. Just deal or ignore it.

Seriously. Why can't we use intelligence, talent, innovation, and creativity when speaking about women in the industry? Some of the comments here make me sick.

@Antiterra: Do we have to have a hot or not debate every time there's an article about women in the industry?
I didn't know that being fuckable had a direct effect on how good one's games are.

Unfortunately Jade is the first name that comes to mind when thinking about women in gaming...and that's just sad.
I had high hopes for her too. Come on, she's HOT!!! It would be great to listen to her talk on and on about great features in games or storyline or whatever. But for me that cannot be the case. I lost all respect for her after Assassin's Creed. As far as I'm concerned she's just a pretty face they put in front of the camera to trick us into falling for a lackluster gaming title.
Honestly though, what are the chances of an uber hot female truly developing and working hardcore in the biz? Not that a female couldn't do it, just not an uber hot one. Think about it, how many studly guys are out there starting gaming companies and developing games:
molyneux, carmack, cliff b, miyamoto..the list continues

"Linda started in the game industry at the ripe old age of 15, I think, and was actually part owner of a software company at that time [Sirtech]. She and I worked together on many great series including Wizardry and Jagged Alliance, and she continues as a designer in the industry working at Blue Fang on the Zoo Tycoon series."
Heh.. you go girl! JA ftw!

About the article's author...
Bonnie Ruberg is a staff writer for a number of video game news sites, as well as a freelance journalist specializing in gender/sexuality issues in video game culture. In addition, she maintains a blog on the topic, Heroine Sheik (www.heroine-sheik.com). Her most recent work has appeared, or been slated for appearance, in The Escapist, Slashdot, and The Onion. Bonnie Ruberg is also a student of creative writing, and many of her short stories have been published in national journals, both online and in print. She can be reached at bonnie@heroine-sheik.com.
So... she specializes in gender issues, and has put some pieces up on gaming related sites, probably more about gender issues than about gaming... She did her studying in making up stories, which is what she would normally do, except writing stuff like this pays the bills.
Anybody else need me to clarify why her list isn't exactly the same list that most of us would put together?
Yeah, I read Kotaku for the stuff the team writes... not for the stuff that they link to that other people (who may or may not have the same interests or background) write.

Horrible list putting in a bunch of academics in place of women who actually make good games. Cari Begle deserves a slot for beaing the lead dev on a top 10 PC game last year (Galciv II)
And yeah, even Jade Reymond deserves a spot over some of those people only marginally related to games. I'm pretty sure there's others, but when I buy a game, the amount of girls involved in its construction doesn't matter to me.

Yes, Jade was my first thought.
Second thought was a tie between Portal Chick (Kim Swift) and Roberta Williams, but Williams hasn't been big in the scene for a long time.
I only guessed one out of three :(

Do we have really to have the hot-or-not "debate" in every single thread that mentions (or, here, hints at) Jade Raymond?
Hey, Gabe Newell is pretty hot, and nobody gives his jocund ventripotence the credit it is due. Unfair!

In your face Jade Raymond! Just because you are smokin hot, look like a model and have a cool name doesn't mean you get to be on the list, no matter how sexy it was when you were talking about Altair's moves.

@excel_excel:
Thats alright, since Kim Swift has one published game under her belt. What has Raymond done before she landed the 'production' gig? She must have climbed up the ladder.
This is also very US - centric as noted by another commentator earlier. There are a few producer women types in the UK industry too, and according to JC Barnett of Japanmanship fame, there are far more ladies working in the Japanese industry than most of the Western Territories. Which reminds me, wasn't Apollo justice produced by a lady?
