Brett Ratner Wants To Make Video Game Movies, Too
Posted by Brian Ashcraft at 2:00 PM on May 27, 2008
Move over Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. Rush Hour franchise helmer Brett Ratner wants to make movies based on video games, too! His interest seems piqued after working on a few ad-type spots for Activision's Guitar Hero. According to Ratner:
The games business is much more exciting than the movie business right now. I will be doing movies that come from video games.
Cue line about Hollywood unable to make good game movies.

The work of guys like Brett Ratner, not to mention the executives who think his work is good, are the root cause of Hollywood is as fucked up as it is right now.
Guys like him couldn't tell an original story if they wanted to. Their life experience is usually so insulated to cinema culture than their work cannot help but be derivative. The only thing these guys know is the movies of their youth, they have nothing to say, no point of view of the world other than the one provided within the narrow lens of their childhood media consumption.
Hey- maybe video game-movie adaptations is the perfect place for him! He'll be a creatively bankrupt filmmaker adapting creatively bankrupt videogames to a creatively bankrupt medium. At least his crimes against cinema will then be limited to films that are almost inherently awful regardless of who directs them.

Thing is, Brett Ratner isn't that good of a director. His credits include that Jessica Simpson "Public Affair" video. I remember based on her comments on some show about it that he thinks he's such a big shot, apparently requiring "take after take after take", it was a music video, not a film.
By Guitar Hero commercials, does he mean those awful ones with David Cook?

He can burn in Hell for making that piece of shit movie and ruining the X-Men movie franchise. Honestly, I hate that film with ever fibre of my being. The only good thing that came out of that movie was that Kelsey Grammar was perfectly cast as Beast. That's it. Nothing more.
He should never be allowed to even think of a film that doesn't star Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker!

So, if it was the script's fault, then shouldn't it have been Mr. Ratner's job to FIX them? He's, like, the director and stuff! He could have said, "oh, there's something wrong with continuity in this scene," or, "hey, this script really, really sucks." Instead, he just said "Fuck it. Ain't my franchise."
I liked Red Dragon, but that wasn't because of his "directing."

Yes, they had soul. They also exhibited some very respectable film-making and characters that, for all their gee-whiz superhero spectacle, developed in reasonably compelling ways. Then our friend Brett Ratner came along and mucked up all the good progress made previously in the franchise.
@mind in rewind:
Aptly put. Around Rush Hour 3's theatrical release, I read an interview of Ratner by Rotten Tomatoes. His arrogance is staggering. Interesting how every bleeding trailer and TV spot for his movies has his name lambasted all over it when he reeks of the same slick corporate stink as any number of nameless stock directors.

Good point
It seems that many of these game to movie projects are picked based only on the bankability of the franchise and then they just build a loose plot around the concept.
If they would pick a game with an excellent story and just stick close to the original material but with of course more editing and movie-like production they could be awesome.
If you are listening Gore Verbinski, do exactly what I just said for Bioshock! You too Paul Thomas Anderson! If you make a Metal Gear movie that sucks I will personally smash you in the head with a bowling pin just like Daniel Plainview did to Elil!

Bah, I've got no grudge with Ratner. Though he directed that shitty film Money Talks, he did do Rush Hour and X3, which both films I didn't genuinely hate or love one way or another. Though I'd be on the fence if he was directing a film adaptation of Activision games like Call of Duty, Quake or Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I wouldn't act like a sobbing vagina either. He may be the director, but the scriptwriter(s) deserve some flak too if the movie is poor.

Hey, as long as he picks a decent project and hires some good writers I'll give it a chance. Most game-to-film projects are horrid because the source material was poorly written in the first place. Who played Dungeon Siege for its plot? DOOM? Resident Evil? There's a pattern here, people.
