Don King's Prizefighter Soundtrack Is Funktastical
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:20 AM on May 31, 2008
There is no way in hell I will every buy a copy of 2K Sports' Don King Presents: Prizefighter. I hate Don King, I'm not all that fond of boxing, and...wait, did you say Bootsy Collins? Awww dammit. That's right, Bootsy Collins is doing an original song for the upcoming fighting game, and when you add in songs by Parliament, James Brown, George Clinton, and Tower of Power, you've got an oddly funk-hungry Fahey on the verge of shelling out $US 60 based on the game's soundtrack alone.
Then of course I remember iTunes, but it was damn close there for a minute.
Joining Bootsy and the crew are some bands of the less funky persuasion, such as Run DMC, Suicidal Tendencies (though Infectious Grooves was pretty damn funky), Blue Oyster Cult, and Iggy Pop, so there really is something for everyone to remember to download from iTunes. Hit the jump for more info while I dig up a gift card I have lying around.

Bootsy Collins busts out his bass to set the mood for documentary-style boxing video game
May 28, 2008 - 2K Sports announced today the artists featured in the soundtrack and ring walk music for the highly anticipated boxing video game, Don King Presents: Prizefighter. To accurately capture different eras of boxing atmosphere, Venom Games compiled more than 70 songs to complement the game, from rock to rap to metal to soul and funk.
The soundtrack will include artists and songs such as Run DMC's "It's Tricky," and Survivor's massively popular "Eye of the Tiger," along with legendary funk bassist, Bootsy Collins, who will provide an exclusive original "Prizefighter" theme song for the game.
"As an avid boxing fan myself, it's been a great pleasure having the opportunity to work on the theme song and be a part of Don King Presents: Prizefighter," said Bootsy Collins. "With different out-of-the-ring situations, documentary and exclusive interview footage, boxing fans are going to get funked up and totally involved with a funky sensation of being in the ring to feel the full boxing experience. Not only that, the music will rock you, knock you, and pounce on your ear hole. Watch out now, or you may get a standing 8 count! Bootsy Collins here, and in yo ear hole baba!!!"

Bootsy has come to take us away to another planet on his space bass. Ahh man, I dig some Bootsy Collins. I'd rahter be with you is so damn funky, that it makes you curl your nose like you smelled something bad and nod your head. Maybe that's why they call it funk.

@etchasketchist: Yes. This game was off my radar but the idea of collapsing someone's skull in to "Make My Funk the P Funk" is now making me reevaluate things.

Even with the funkasaurus rex being brought to this game, I will not be picking up this sure-to-be-meh title.

@etchasketchist: bwhahahaahahahah! Awesome post!
Personally, I feel Rock Band will never be a worthy purchase until Jimi Hendrix, Tool, Watch Them Die and Prince are included.
On Topic, it's good to see some thought go into the soundtrack but what about the game?

From the release: "In Don King Presents: Prizefighter, players must train, overcome adversity, get promoted and avoid temptation in order to rise in notoriety.
Change a few words in there, and you basically described life in the rap music industry. But I especially liked the part about avoiding temptation. I picture a mini-game where you have to dodge incoming hookers and lines of cocaine while picking up endorsement deals.
Happy this is coming to the Wii, provided they can nail the controls. Boxing on the Wii is a full-on workout. (WiiFit's proving that to me... wow).

Why is that GTA IV and Don King's Fucking Stupid Boxing Game, have all this awesome funk music, but stupid Rock Band is nothing but pasty white dudes of American, Canadian or British persuasion? Unacceptable.

@Eville1: Yes! "Infectious Grooves blitzkrieged the house"!
Anyway, funk and boxing, together in one ring? Hmmm. doesn't sound like that meshes. Help me understand the connection.

Is that a recent picture of Bootsy? That man does not age... unless he's hiding a receding hairline under that hat. But a jerry curl would just look wrong-er (just having a JC is wrong in itself) with one.

I prefer Suicidal to Infectious Grooves, and if they put songs from the Lights... Camera... Revolution! or Feel Like Shit, Deja vu era I'll be all over this game.
Pretty much like the hard on I got when Tony Stark was listening to institutionalized.

Awesome, I didn't know the funkateer was still in the bussiness. I think this music would fit the facebreakers title better, with all the goofyness n shit.
For the moment still playing Fight night 3, still easily one of the best ps3 titles available. I dont think prizefighter will be able to convince me, allthough a new Punch-out on Wii would totally make me buy a Wii. Nintendo needs to make another Punch-out!!! Ready to rumble did a nice take on the goofy boxing, and Facebreaker is obviously aiming for the same, but the characters just dont make me laugh.

@Zaos: I'll let that slide because you said "probably." This denotes that you have not yet heard "half that stuff," as you put it.
Try it out. You'll see. Bootsy will own your soul.

@etchasketchist:
Simple, GTA IV/Don King Presents both come from TakeTwo (remember when they got Dan the Automator to arrange the soundtrack for one of their NBA games? Someone at TakeTwo loves music!) Whereas Rockband comes from MTV/EA, neither company is exactly known for pushing good music on the masses...
