GTA IV Thief Gets Some Local News Air Time
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:00 PM on May 1, 2008
San Diego area Grand Theft Auto fan Dennis Richard Fiel, recently arrested on suspicion of stealing a couple copies of GTA IV, got some TV time on the local news. You may remember Fiel from our previous boring old text-only post, but now you can watch his police cruiser window kicking and photographer spitting prowess via YouTube. His parents must be so proud! It's filled with local news-isms, making it worth the watch. I wonder if the police officer asking Fiel "Do you wanna get tazed?" got a response. Thanks, Ryan!

I love that woman (can't remember her name, just said 'Concerned Parent' under her name) was talking about how kids get alienated by games... she does realise the guy was 27 right? that is NOT a kid, that's a stupid guy that didn't want to dish out the cash and then got hungry.

Wow. "May be acting out the game in real life!" That's some genius (read: DUMB AS HELL) reporting right there. One man does not speak for all gamers. I played GTA III when I was 10-11, and I am fine. This dude has some mental issues and should be thrown in a nice padded room.

I get so frustrated by news articles compiled in this manner that I don't know what to say.
Some guy steals some stuff from a game store and he's "acting out a game?". Infuriating. I didn't see any spinning yellow arrow out the front of that Gamespot, did you?

I really wish I could have responded to the concerned parent with "Maybe if parents were raisign their children instead of just letting them "act out" the games this wouldn't be an issue. I was raised on Mortal Kombat and yet I've never tried to knock someone's head off or tear out a spine. Maybe it's because my parents said "You know that's fake right?" If I did, we were cool. If I even hinted that I didn't (which I joked about once) WHOOSH my game was gone. Imagine that, parenting has an effect on kids.

Wow, cop threatened to Taze him while he was fully restrained in a police cruiser? It's no wonder they kill people with those things.
It is a less-lethal weapon, meaning it is less likely to kill someone than a gun, thus it is meant to be used as a substitute for a gun when lethal force isn't necessary. He wouldn't have threatened to shoot him if he didn't have a Tazer, now would he?
A more appropriate measure would be to charge him with restricting arrest, destruction on public property, and/or other charges. Then suggest the judge give him plenty of community service time, that would go a long way and send a much better message than shocking him.

Instead of getting mad at the news for covering this, I think that gamers should be mad at the idiot who tried to steal the game. Morons like that give gamers a bad name. How did that loser even afford a PS3/360? If he has to resort to going into a Gamestop and attacking employees to steal a game, then I can't imagine what he had to do to get the console.
That guy is pathetic. The sad thing is he probably thought he was so cool for doing that. When someone commits a stupid crime like that, I think that instead of sending them to jail they should just have someone beat the crap out of them. People like that need their asses kicked. That guy clearly had an attitude problem. He's probably one of those idiots who walks around with a chip on his shoulder always looking to start fights with people because he molested as a kid. A good ass whooping would humble him a little.

Eh it's so easy for them to target video games. I'm surprised they didn't cue in on his pants being a possible way to identify him as the trouble causing type - rather than his attitude. Because oy, who judges people based on their attitude right?
Last I checked, Nico doesn't exactly use pepper spray to steal anything. Granted I haven't played the game long - but I don't even think it's a weapon.
I think what everyone is sick of is that video games tend to take the blame for all kinds of BS if it's even remotely connected in any way. Game at your house? There's a connection... They reach so far for a connection to it that it has become absurd - and I think that gamers in general are just sick of hearing news reports about it.
Equally, why do we not hear this guys music habits? Why do we not hear of his past offenses? Because none of it matters.
It wasn't a good report. It was just another report trying to keep a few viewers while it can until the majority of the news watching populace knows much more about games than the reporters do.
At that point, it'd be like a high school know-it-all brat reporting to a bunch of meteorologists about the weather via TV.. And when I say reporting, I mean the guy is standing up there - giving his opinion on the weather and how it will react. The student knows nothing of meteorology, and has no business attempting to place any connections to the topic. The student should just do their job and leave the connecting to the experts. I think the same goes here.
I am just tired of the news in general, on multiple topics, attempting to give me their opinions and views on topics that they obviously know nothing about. Unfortunately that falls to most things under the sun now.

The thief stole a bunch of games, one of which happened to be GTA4, and they rail on how it must've affected him, despite him most likely stealing it because he had never played it before. And then they do a quick turnaround and have other people say that it isn't the games fault, and the thief's. And then they start going into the sales of the game. I mean, they're covering a robbery, right? What the heck...?

People have been robbing stores stores as far back as they've been around, I don't know why the woman is blaming entertainment.

The media is ridiculous...why must all psychos be tagged with being corrupted by games?
Aside from the point, the highlight of the clip was definitely the cop: "Do you wanna get tazed?!"

It's a shame, the people who work at that Gamestop are really cool guys too. I hope they're ok.

My game was reserved at this Gamestop, I live in San Diego so I went to pick it up and they where closed for a Extra 2 hours, So I was kinda angry for not knowing the reason so I just went to Best Buy instead to pick up a copy.

so they sold it to a paying customer... i bet he paid for the game full price like they always charged for a opened box game, in this case - stolen game.

@HfAsianInvasion: Thta's because in San Diego news, that's the best they can come up with which is a reason why I don't watch the news down here any more.
He stole $149 worth in game? So that's about 2 games haha. but I guess it's better saying 149 rather then 2. I live right next to that gamestop as well and I'm sorry I missed it all.

@mrplow8: Instead of getting mad at the news for covering this, I think that gamers should be mad at the idiot who tried to steal the game. Morons like that give gamers a bad name.
Wrong. We should be mad at the media for spoon feeding this drivel to the masses. The media gave the label "gamer" to him. He's also someone's son, brother, cousin, a student, a citizen. So I guess morons like that give all (sons/brothers/cousins/ students/citizens) a bad name?

On CNN earlier, the anchors said flat-out "Gee I had no idea gamers were above 30." Silly adults still don't know we've skillfully infiltrated their ranks.
Also, that CNN tech correspondent is really cute.

Well, aside from the retarded news reporter, I have to give them props for including the off-screen quote, "Crazy people are going to do crazy things, whether it's stealing a video game or robbing a bank."

@Cruithne: Yep.. I noticed that too. He's not a child, and if he's 27 years old, the only "violent" games he was "raised" on were probably Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog.
People are idiots.

Why do people act so violently AFTER they are taken by the police?
I mean its like they already got you, there's nothing you can do and then you just start doing anything like kicking the windows?

You can almost hear the people from the news saying: "Told 'ya games makes people crazy and violent".
No, really. The guy could've based his actions on the game, shure. But being crazy as he is, he could've based it on movies, a book, or pretty much anything else.
And the worst part is: While reporters go hunting for details that could link a crime to a videogame, other, more important and unbiased news might be happening elsewhere.
They just won't drop it. It's like violence and games suddenly became more important than the country going into an economical crisis and stuff like that.
Something like a scapegoat.

I really don't think he was a gamer. Probably just a druggie trying to get some more drugs by selling GTA 4 for double the price.......
