How To Visit The Beating Heart Of Liberty City
Posted by Mike Fahey at 2:30 AM on May 1, 2008
We noticed that Gawker posted a picture of the beating heart of the Statue of Happiness in Grand Theft Auto IV's Liberty City, so Crecente and I saddled up to show you exactly how to make it there...and if you can make it there, you'll make it anywhere. Read on for instructions, as well as a clip of Crecente and I embarking on a great adventure, in which he dies. Twice.
You'll need to find yourself a helicopter, which can be readily found in the pre-game meeting lounge or the airport in town. Fly out to the statue and hover about the base, jumping out so that you land on the square rooftop with the four doors. One of the doors bears a placard reading "No Hidden Content Through Here." The placard lies. Go through the door (literally), climb the ladder within, and you'll find yourself face-to-face with the bloody beating heart of Liberty City. Then just kick back, pop open a cold one, and enjoy the moment. Ahhhh. Now this is living.

I should make a shirt that says:
"SPOILER"
the internetz ruined my wonder for life.
But seriously, so people don't complain so much. why not just make all headlines pertaining to a potential spoiler labeled simply "May spoil your fun, no whining" so people would only have themselves to blame.
I don't mind reading about this because I would have never even thought to get inside that statue... hell... I haven't even SEEN the statue yet in the game.

@Mike Fahey: Because the headline and first sentence says that there is a beating heart in the statue, and he hasn't been there yet, and having only seen a glimpse of the statue in the distance, he'd have no way of knowing that the cool Easter Egg was inside.
And he feels like that was a spoiler, and that's totally valid, as is your opinion to disagree that it's not.

Also, doesn't the title of the link, the page and everything associated with this entire page say "How to visit the beating heart of liberty city"? To me, that says "click here if you want to see a spoiler of how to find an easter egg".
Thats like seeing a link that says "See how GTAIV ends" and then getting disappointed for seeing the ending.

@radink360: How is it spoiled for you? Did you read the instructions, or watch the video, both placed after the jump? Or did one blurry photo ruin the entire joy of finding the easter egg for you?
I mean, we did say exactly what we were posting after the link. You didn't have to look, and if the photo somehow ruined the entire experience for you, I'd say you need to find the thing yourself. It's tons better than the photo. It's all about the journey, after all.

This is one of the things I love about GTA games., the hidden stuff. I remember finding the sign in GTA III that said "you aren't suppose to see this" or something like that. And in San Andreas, seeing the sign in San Fierro that described the big bridge, including it's size in bytes and the number of textures. I hope there's more in the game.

I am getting tired of people complaining about "spoilers". Especialy when they are reading a goddamn videogame blog site. If you don't want to see something like that then don't go to the one place that most people would be wanting to see something like it. It's like going to a strip club and complaining about the nudity.
So you are upset that you saw something that you could have easily missed after playing the game completly through? This isn't even a real spoiler. It is showing you how to access something that you may never have seen on your own. That is an Easter Egg. A spoiler is a video clip of the ending or telling you how the game or a movie ends. That is something that people spend time focusing on getting to through natural progression. Flying a helicopter into the Statue of Happiness, and jumping out of it to get to the heart is NOT part of the natural progression of the game. It is not part of the stroy line; therefor, it is not a spoiler.

I do think it's a little crazy to expect absolutely no spoilers the day after the biggest game of the year comes out. If you're that concerned with spoilers, just wait until you're a good portion through it until your done. It's like reading Harry Potter discussion boards the day after the last book came out and expecting the ending to not be posted. Of course it will be posted, and you should have known better if you didn't want it spoiled.

No it just means I read it on digg first. If I read it on here first it would still be ruined. Why? Because if Kotaku doesn't keep up with how every other news site posts then they won't get as many views by blantantly spoiling it causing readers to just read it anyway. Just because some douche on digg posted the obvious easter egg doesn't mean kotaku has to stoop down to that douche of a level.

I kind of agree with some people here. No we don't have to click the link or watch the video but when there is a giant picture of the spoiler with blantantly obvious titles, that isn't being nice. Unfortunately this was already spoiled for me on digg. But seriously the game just came out and everyone feels the need to post every last detail in more-than-obvious captioned pictures and ruin it for others. I'll listen to what people say then and not read Kotaku for the remainder of my GTA playing experience. If that's really the route we have to take. There are many blogs out there that allow jumps to spoiled content by warning them before reading ANY information on what it is.

its not like someone forced anybody to watch the video.
I, for one, have been to the statue without a chopper and saw no way of getting inside so I would not have thought about bringing a chopper back. I mean, you can walk into the base portion, and climb the stairs, but it only brings you to the second level platforms. No obvious way to get inside the statue.
so to me, unless you are just overly curious and happen to be flying in close, how would you know to drop out of the chopper and walk on in.
The point is, its a spoiler if you click the link, read the article or watch the video. If you don't want something spoiled, skip it.

@TheKingBoar:
and still there's a large difference between quirky game news and spoiled content. Like I said this was already spoiled on digg to me. And why should we care? Maybe THIS isn't such a huge deal no. But what about next time or the time after that when they DO post a spoiler that IS big enough to complain about? How do I know they won't post the ending video or something tomorrow? I don't because I won't read this site anymore.

@Liopleurodon: That's funny, I was thinking the same question about you. Kotaku is known for quirky game news. A funky easter egg in the biggest game of the year I think qualifies as that. And as Mr.SithNinja said, spoiler != easteregg.
A bigger point though is who the fuck cares? It's one easter egg in a huge freaking game. Stop bitching about it on Kotaku and go find the rest of them yourself.

As I mentioned above and as Mr.SithNinja stated, how many people actually would have taken the time to fly a chopper to the statue and jump out of the chopper onto the statue if they hadn't seen posted somewhere that there is a reason behind it?
I would not have. As I said, I've been to the island already and looked around and didn't have a chopper. I wouldn't think "oh I have to return here and see if I can fly out of my helo and land on the statue". I might eventually fly back to it for a better view, but even from an aerial view of the statue, it doesn't appear to have any way inside.
Without someone originally posting this information, more and more people would probably miss this "easter egg" because its not part of the natural game progression or any side missions.
I'm sure if you wait long enough someone will post something saying "If you swim for an hour east of the island and look at the ground, you'll see a face in the sand" or something like that. Well, unless you are told about it, how many people would actually just drop into random spots hoping to find something?

Man, how come everybody's gotta be either mean or whiny? This is nothing to go boycotting Kotaku over, come on. That's immature as hell. And everyone who's all "waah well why don't you stay off the internet", you're just generally being dicks.
And Crecente and Fahey, you should at least admit that you shouldn't have revealed any of this stuff until after the jump. Fahey, I get that most of the fun is in the journey but it'd have been extra cool to see the heart for the first time while I was the one playing.
Apologies if any of these points were already made in the time it took me to type this.

@Liopleurodon: If they post the ending video tomorrow...here's a thought: DON'T WATCH IT!
Kotaku posted an article discussing how to specifically remove any article with a specific tag. Perhaps Mr. Fahey or another Kotaku regular could help me on this.
www.kotaku.com/tags/not:_____ <- Insert specific tag (in this case "gta-iv") in the blank.
Problem solved.
In other news, it's one easter egg in a massive game. And it's actually an easter egg that makes me interested in purchasing this to see what other unique surprises are hidden for me to find.
In conclusion, get over yourself. The game is now released, and any part of the story is now open game for discussion.
This isn't a spoiler. A spoiler relates to the story. Knowing the Statue of Happiness has a living heart in no way impacts the story progression.
Use the features Kotaku mentioned at least a week ago to elminate any GTAIV stories. End of problem.

I mean, could I argue that MSN, FSN, ESPN, and Yahoo don't post results of sporting events in the chance that somebody TIVO'd the broadcast and wants to watch it without spoilers?

Okay it was my comment that started all this nonsense, and I really wasn't that worked up about this in particular, but was more commenting on the phenomenon on the web in general. But whatever. When I re-read my comment it sounds more pissy than I meant it to.
I did return to read the comments and am surprised by the tone of Crecente and Fahey's replies here, especially after the great commenting crisis of conscience that kotaku went through two weeks ago or whatever. Maybe it's just because I felt weird about starting the topic, but it felt kinda mean-spirited versus just discussing the topic.
Of course mine sounds more amped up than I intended to, and perhaps that's their impressions too, but I am also just a semi-regular visitor rather than, like, the writers of the site.
Last thing and then I am done with the topic: the people who want to just say "Don't get on the web" or "tag out GTA articles" aren't being helpful at all. Why would I want to avoid GTA news if I'm interested in it? That doesn't mean I'd want to know certain angles.

Funniest comments all year. I can't believe people are renouncing Kotaku for having a picture of the heart and a headline that reads How To Visit The Beating Heart Of Liberty City. If you read/saw that much and didn't want to know where it is then you could have stopped reading. This is a tiny little part of the game. Most people would never have found it and as Kotaku say it has been reported on the majority of other gaming sites, Kotaku just gave us a commentated video that was enjoyable to watch. Over-reaction to a slight oversight by Fahey who probably shouldn't have put the pic up just to be safe.

I'm actually more baffled people are caring more that such an awesome Easter Egg that most would never, ever see until you were told in passing conversation or stumbled across it, has ruined all of Kotaku for them. Talk about knee jerk reactions, so they messed up and put the picture of the heart on the front, is that enough to boycott Kotaku and then fling your waste products like angry chimps in an ever increasing magnitude of random directions? Apparently to some!
Come, let us focus on what really matters. The jerky helicopter ride, the fact that Crecente didn't actually notice that he was on the left side of the helicopter, the part that was hanging rather off the edge where-as Fahey was quite comfortable to land leading to an amusing death. The fact that Crecente died once more, and we're forced to use our imaginations and his voice to only imagine the comedy there of impact.
Or the fact that he didn't so much care to get into the statue so much as he wanted to shoot Fahey in the head again. Now that's love, that's what we need to be sharing here on Kotaku; The love of shooting another person in the head in a game, with rocket launchers.
...Sniff, so beautiful it is.

What everyone seems to be missing with this heart thing is not that Rockstar put a beating heart of Liberty City inside the Statue of Happiness, but what Rockstar is saying, symbolically, about Hillary Clinton, who if you recall, was one of the loudest, most vicious voices in condemning Rockstar for the Hot Coffee thing.
This is only a little out there, but to me seems perfect plausible. First, some basic details:
The real Statue of Liberty has written on the tablet in her hand, July 4, 1776, the date which America declared its independence from Great Britain. And the very heart of that declaration is the freedom of speech. It permeates every idea that led to the founding of this nation. So in effect, the freedom of speech(which covers anything from saying someone is an idiot to what you can put in a movie or game) is the HEART of liberty.
And how is that represented? Chained and hidden in the guise of Hillary Clinton. And the most significant date in American history, the birth date of the inalienable right to the freedom of speech, has been erased from its place of honor. And what is there instead? The most important thing to Hillary Clinton: Hillary Clinton.
So if you ask me what the Statue of Happiness is to me, in GTA 4, I'll tell you it's a giant f*ck you to Hillary Clinton, that millions of people will see.
Neat!
