Metal Gear Movie Update
What about that Metal Gear Solid movie? Before the presser started, I talked to Konami's Aki Saito, who is handling the film negotiations. According to him, the contract is still being worked out. Kojima will not be directing. However, he will be acting as a producer. Says Saito:
Hollywood has great respect for Mr. Kojima. They want to meet with him. Kojima will be acting as a producer, but we don't know how involved he'll be as a producer. Often Hollywood adaptations have the original game creator involved at the beginning, but somewhere along the line they fall out of view. This is why it's very important for us to carefully pick the studio for this project.
Kojima is a great cineaste, and Konami does seem serious about bringing his vision to the screen. Regarding to potential directors, Saito says, "Paul Thomas Anderson is interested."

Something tells me he's confused Paul Thomas Anderson with Paul W.S. Anderson.
It's gotta be W.S. Anderson.

@manderf: DAMN! That would be brutal! Imagine Solid discussing with Big Boss and Liquid whether they should buy cereals or cookies for breakfast, while The Boss secretly falls in love with Otakon, his son-in-law!
Featuring:
Bill Murray as Big Boss xD
Ben Stiller as Otakon
Gwineth Paltrow as Emma Emmerich
(etc.)
Too good to be true.

@TheManator: Double post. Sorry, no edit. I hope they start out this movie series with the first Metal Gear plot with Big Boss. Hell, even starting the series first with Snake Eater would be good too. Naked Snake FTM(ega)W
TheManator
Is David Hayter still writing the script?

I for one think it would be much better for a director such as PTA to work on a movie for MGS (for the record, not sure why they feel they need to do a movie in the first place). I'd rather a solid (no pun) director that doesn't repeatedly churn out game-movies work on it than the other way around. Think Christopher Nolan for the new Batman franchise as opposed to a Michael Bay, JJ Abrams, Brett Ratner, etc. I think you get my point.
decodergrizzly
Awesome choice if he does it. At least it's not Paul W.S. (Worthless Shit) Anderson

@skoffs: Kojima
(it's 2am, I'm tired)

@DataScream:
if that IS the case, and a certain Mr. "couldn't direct his way out of a wet paper bag" Anderson IS interested, someone needs to warn Kajima-sama as soon as possible.

How about... Wes Anderson? I mean... Snake does have a pretty fucked up family...

Paul W.S. Anderson is as bad as Uwe Boll, only he actually can sometimes work out a decent story in the writing phase and then burn it once he starts directing. So he's actually a step up from Uwe Boll, but still makes him a terrible choice for this movie. I'm wondering this the guy is getting his Paul Anderson's confused, or if someone is telling him the wrong name.
DataScream
@marmidukestank: I had the same initial interpretation and became extremely upset. I'd hate to see another of Paul W..S Anderson's garbage "re-envisionings" of a story I enjoy.
God, that would suck.
Arttemis
Lol, looking through all the comments above, I'm glad I wasn't the only person who almost shat themselves when they saw the words "Paul", "Anderson", and "MGS movie" in the same sentence! XD
skoffs
@marmidukestank:
Yes I did.
I'm still fearing it is W.S. and not P.T. it's gotta be a mistranslation.
But if it isn't, and it happens, WOW.
P.S.: W.S. will rape and pillage the franchise in a way only Boll can best. One only has to look to what he did to RE.
VicViper
It's definitely Paul WS Anderson.
DraculaDillenger
@Wolf_Dog:
Same thing. If it indeed was Paul W.S. Anderson, I'd be dreading this a bit. Mind you the bit part comes from the optimism that Kojima wouldn't let anyone bastardize his baby...
excaliburps
@Brian Ashcraft
Can you actually confirm it's Paul Thomas Anderson and not Paul W.S Anderson. I'm scared...
Wolf_Dog
OMFG!!! I got confused with Paul piece of shit ruining resident evil, Aliens and predator in 1 year Anderson.
Pheeeeew!!!
Wolf_Dog
@septajohn: I was considering the chances of that. I love Event Horizon, but the rest...
And YEAH! Go for Paul Thomas, please! And if you are to push all boundaries, rejoin him with Fiona Apple and let her write the musical score XD. THAT would be amazing.
EloraHRanma
@septajohn: I really hope your wrong!
PTA is an interesting but good choice especially considering the amount of dialogue/cutscenes in MGS games you need someone who can handle that well and pace the movie correctly.
When I saw the news about them talking to hollywood I was pretty dissapointed because I was thinking a japanese director would do a better job and avoid "Generic Super-Soldier Action Movie". Now I'm interested.
Of course we all know that "Paul Thomas Anderson is interested." is PR speak for "we haven't spoken to him yet, but we've been trying to get hold of his PA, and hopefully he'll call us back"
Voojagig
Surely that's a mistranslation and the guy said "Paul W.S. Anderson"... I doubt Paul Thomas would do a video game movie, whereas Paul W.S. loves doing video games movies...
septajohn
Paul Thomas Anderson!!??
I normally try to be as reserved as possible regarding rumors like this but, oh wow! Paul Thomas Anderson is my favourite director working today, I look forward to all of his projects with so much anticipation I couldn't even begin to make it clear through words. He would be an inspired choice!
ChefReinhold
@Antiterra: I don't know. Let's go ahead and say that, if Paul Thomas Anderson is directing and Hideo Kojima is involved as a producer, that pretty much means it's going to be a good movie. Don't even think of it as a "videogame" movie. Think of it as a "movie".
PTA is the man who made a thoughtful comedy-drama about the 1970s pornography industry somehow flow like an action flick; he spent three hours building up fourteen ad-lib-heavy plot lines in "Magnolia", only to destroy them all with a ridiculous injection of the supernatural (probably the only part of the movie that was set in stone from the beginning).
And above all this, PTA is a man who looked at Adam Sandler's comedic works, noticed their trend toward outbursts of freakish angry violence, and made it a personal quest to write a "Meta-Adam-Sandler Flick", which turned out to be "Punch Drunk Love", which was, whether you like it or not, pretty amazing from a technical standpoint. I mean, he turned "Billy Madison" and "Happy Gilmore" into art. That's impressive, in this bullshit Hollywood world.
So: I'm prettttttttttttty sure if PTA is confirmed as the director, it's not going to be a "Generic Super-Soldier Action Movie". I'm pretty sure that he, if no one else, would be able to understand that the heart of "Metal Gear Solid" isn't the soldiers and the "action", it's the . . . atmosphere.
I'd expect something like Shakespeare, with nuclear missiles and giant robots and soliloquies and deceptively simple character relationship dynamics.
The story of the first game could be compressed and made into a pretty spectacular two-and-a-half-hour movie.

wait what ?
that is really insane
he' s the last person i expected
really that almost random
salthegeek
want that big ass poster in the pic. thats what i want. o yeah..... of course i want a movie too :D
zanzibarlegend
Anyone else at first glance read it as:
Saito says, "Paul W.S. Anderson is interested."?
marmidukestank
Paul Thomas Anderson? That's a name I wouldn't have expected! Hopefully, we won't end up with Generic Super-Soldier Action Movie #8735.
If Kojima stays involved and they do choose a decent director, we just might get stuff like... a story, and real characters, and, and...
No. No, I won't get excited. I mustn't.
At least, with Street Fighter and Dragonball, nobody expects them to be actually good, so there's no possible disappointment there.
Antiterra
PTA!
Somehow, PTA seems as weirdly perfect for MGS as Peter Jackson does for Halo.
I say, go for it.

Hmmm... There Will Be Blood was really well done, but I'm still not sure about this guy for an MGS film. Daniel Day Lewis pretty much made up 70% of the awesome in Blood, and the rest was from the cinematography. If Paul Anderson had a more impressive history of quality films, then I'd be more interested, but as it is I'm still skeptical.
Blah8
Um, Boogie Nights anyone?
Fuck yeah.
sadisticfreak432
As long as Kojima has say in this movie, I won't be too worried.
TeddySlayer
Yes! Paul Thomas Anderson freaking rocked with "There Will Be Blood". I couldn't have wanted anyone better to bring Kojima's vision to the big screen.
I am also happy that they got Verbinski for the Bioshock movie. And when you fear that these movies will ruin the game and suck all the way around, remember it could be Uwe Boll directing!
I cannot w8 for mgs4 btw!
Oh bring me the sweet stuff baybe!
