New Pirate Classes In PotBS
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:40 AM on May 14, 2008
Up until now, pirates in Flying Lab's MMO Pirates of the Burning Sea have gotten the short end of the stick. While the different nations had a choice of career paths, pirates were pirates, which works fine in PVE but in group PVP it led to an imbalance...everyone knows what they're up against when they're fighting pirates. Well not anymore. The upcoming 1.4 patch of the game is introducing two new pirate classes, separate factions in the Brethren of the Coast. Existing pirates will be become Cutthroats, the more brutal type of pirates, while players creating new characters can opt between that or the new Buccaneer class.
Buccaneers are pirates too, but a bit subtler than their burning-bearded brethren. They steal and loot, but also manipulate the black markets. Some would call them gentleman adventurers, though few are true blue bloods. Buccaneers do not have the raw power of cutthroats, but they work well in groups and can help friends and cripple enemies.Bah. Either way they're still pirates, and one ninja could easily take either out.

@KillerBee: Likewise, which I generally interpret as a great sucking.

Does anyone play this game? I have a shitload of gamer friends and most have never even heard of, let alone play it. I can't think of a single person that I know that plays.
I messed with the beta a bit but it was, uh, rough around the edges.

Ninja Pirates are the best. No one can beat down on THEM.
But if you want a REAL comparison...

Hey, Fahey - where's the MS Gamer's Day coverage? Isn't there someone there from K-talk?

@ZombiePuppy: Obviously. Thats why Marvel has like 15 different Marvel Zombie comics running right now.
Alas poor Marvel, being the undead zombie horse.

Haha, yay for ninjas!
I see it now:
Someone hacks the system, and behold, a PK that's a ninja!
That would finally end the debate ^_^

I played it for quite a while, but ultimately it's the same grind as WoW and all its clones with slightly more interesting combat (ship to ship, anyway). I want an MMO that does something genuinely different.
It sounds like the buccaneers are basically pirate privateers.

They should make a third pirate class. Pirate of Penzance. You would have +50 charisma, but your clothing choices would be limited to pastel colors, the only pants would be tights and the only shirts would be blouses.

@cdammers:
Different in what way? There's many different MMOs out there, try some out maybe?
Peruse mmorpg.com or another database of MMOs and find one to your tastes.

@Tizlor: At a guess, I'd say he's bored of the artificially created time-sinks that most MMOs come to depend upon to maintain their customer base. City of Heroes suffers from the same problem that WoW does, Asheron's Call and Everquest and every other major MMORPG suffers from....once you've sucked the life out of the content, it becomes dull and repetitive. Where that threshold lies varies from player to player, but it's there.
Too many MMOs just make cosmetic changes without actually making systems changes....if I want to play an MMO that's NOT WoW, it's got to be VERY different...or I might as well just play the best MMO already out there. Many MMos just pad the experience artificially with things like random drops or level requirements or the like to force you to invest hours upon hours of repetitive activity to attain a goal...which often translates to no-fun for some folks.

I have. Among others - PotBS, WoW,CoH,Eve and Everquest. Eve's been the closest to offering something genuinely different, but ultimately it's still about quests, levelling, trade and loot.
I'm not a game designer, so obviously I don't have fully fledged ideas that the will shock the world, but I'd like to see something that does away with that whole model entirely. So, for instance, no grinding/levelling at all - instead of improving your character, you change the environment. Or a massively multiplayer Spore. Or MMO Capitalism Plus, where each player's choices affect the overall economy.
I'm really looking forward to APB, for instance. It seems to be retaining some of the levelling/loot mechanic, unfortunately, but the focus is much more on dynamic interaction between the players and giving your actions real consequences for the community at large. I'm really hopeful that the imperatives of console development will breathe new life into the MMO genre. I think we'll see it in strategy games first (and I say that as a huge fan of traditional RTS), but in five years time or so, I expect that WoW clones will be in the minority.

This game was so...SO..terribly boring.
Ugly.
Disorganized. Not Hellgate: London disorganized, but closer to Ultima Online at launch disorganized.
A wee bit incomprehensible.
And...WILDLY boring.
Save your money, people. Save your money.

I'm way too busy playing Pirates of the Caribbean Online to even worry about this game. I'm kind of surprised PotBS hasn't been better received though. Anyone I knew who had heard of it thought it was beautiful. I don't think any of those people bothered to keep track of it and play it at any point in time, however.

I really like PotBS, it's kinda like Eve though, you have to be the kind of person who wants to play that kind of game. A lot of people want something that isn't WoW, but then when they find it, they try to play it like it was WoW and get disappointed.
