Metal Gear Solid 4 Presser!

A buzzer just sounded! Literally. The lights have gone down and I'm in the dark. Good thing I have an illuminated MacBook Pro, amirite. There's an ad for Sony phones and now Uniqlo. Just like before a movie. There's a funny no smoking ad with MGS theme exclamation points. Hahaha, now there are a bunch of phoney MGS themed ads like for guns and stuff. Great stuff.
Watching the MGS4 opening on a huge movie screen in full Dolby Digital sound. Beautiful stuff. It starts with Old Snake wearing a hooded outfit in the back of a truck. The sound is truly amazing. The credits role as it goes from gameplay to unable. Great mix of game play and cut scenes.
If you are thinking of purchasing MGS4, you really ought to play it in a movie theatre.
Man, we just watched a killer in-game shootout and credits are STILL GOING.
Fumiaki Tanaka, Konami honcho, has taken the stage, talking about how the game is going on sale in the age of casual games. He's saying how the game will make its release date.
"MGS4 has great graphics, gameplay and music," says Tanaka. "Everything." He's talking about the power of the PS3. How they want to make more great games. Now he's talking about the special Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 console.
The game will go on sale as scheduled and there will be big advertising campaigns and tie-ups.
Tanaka just introduced Kojima.
Kojima has taken the stage, saying that the game is finished. "It was a difficult game to make," he says. "It took a long time to finish." Since the game was the last in the series, the staff had to deal with that challenge. The PS3 hardware and HD game also presented challenges. Also the worldwide release.
"I thought about giving up," says Kojima. "But I had to finish it for the fans."
"Now, there is a casual boom," he says.
He's talking about taking risks, how it's important to take risks. How risks are important for the future of gaming.
"I'm not thinking of a Renaissance," he says, "but I'd like a return to gaming." Kojima has left the stage.
Watching the first PS3 MGS4 television ad. It shows scenes from the game. And a kid wrapped on in it, ignoring the phone.
Kaz Hirai has taken the stage, congratulating Konami and Kojima on finishing the game.
Hirai says he ended up playing the game for 2 hours and he didn't even know that much time had passed. "It's one of those games that you can get wrapped up in," says Hirai.
"Konami and Sony are taking this worldwide," says Hirai. "We are backing up MGS4's advertising."
Hirai mentions the special Metal Gear PLAYSTATION 3.
Hirai encourages folks to try out the game and the PS3, congratulations Konami again.

Oh! The English trailer, complete with MOVIE TRAILER GUY VOICE. Hey, this is pretty neat.
It's like a mega blockbuster movie trailer, complete with MOVIE VOICE GUY saying "This Summer"...
Now, Kojima is going to play through the game. For forty minutes. On a giant movie screen. Think about that.

Kojima is in the movies! Big Hollywood style press event! Metal Gear Solid 4, coming this summer.
All the questions will be answered, thousands of minutes of long-winded dialogue will be heard.
I hope this is not MGS3 revisited. Cutscenes are supposed to be the reward, not a chore.

OMG! I need a new tv by next month or I wont get the complete MGS4 experience. I have the surround sound and ps3 to boot. Just a crappy 24" crt television. Pfft Im gonna use my 22" 2ms lcd monitor as soon as I get the peice to translate component to either dvi or vga. OMG OMG OMG

I want to thank the head honchos at Sony and Konami for still miserably failing to answer the question of whether the special MGS 4 gunmetal system coming to america is a 40 gig or 80 gig system.
There's no doubt MGS 4 is going to impress. I don't need to see any tv commercials that prove what is already fact. But it's heartening to know that the game is finished, polished, and Kojima has ended the series with a bang.

OMG, I dying to play MGS4.
Srly, best game ever. No but really, I doubt I'll be able to swing it so I can play this in a movie theater, but you better believe when I pop this game in the surround sound will be on full blast and I'll be sitting about two feet from my 32" LCD.

I don't get jealous of people on the internet all that often... but damn.
On the other hand, I've gone media blackout on MGS4 for a while now. I'd hate to see it being played without going 'okay you died - it's my turn!'
I woulda' loved to have played GTA IV for the first time and been amazed when Niko went through his windshield the first time. I won't deny myself such pleasures for Metal Gear Solid.

@neednorespect: If you think you'd like stealth action, this is the best in the genre.
But if you like tactical shooters, MGS4 caters to that as well. Since you've never played a Metal Gear game before I would suggest renting it first to see if you like it.
Then go out and buy all the other games.

Ryan Payton (assistant producer for Kojima Productions) has repeteadly said in interviews and in his podcast that he's been doing his best to make sure newcomers would understand everything thats going on in the game. One of the best features for guys like you is the instant flashback: when you get to a point where they would make reference for something that happened before you can push an inpront button and the game will freeze and you'll be shown a recap in the form of a past cutscene like if it was a flashback so you can understand everything they are saying.
Gameplay im sure youll have a blast and while the story is convulted Im sure Konami has done a great work so newcomers can udnerstand the story so i would say go for it, buddy.
Deep down MGS storyline can be summarized simply by saying: "Legendary soldier Solid Snake wants to stop maniac brother Liquid Snake from terrorizing the world with his nuclear bipedal tanks called Metal Gears." Simple enough.... good vs bad.

I was going to say that those "purchasable" customizable weapons that Ashcraft mentioned were the weapons in the game that you purchase and upgrade using Drebin points...
...but then he mentions the in-game store where you can purchase weapons.
Two separate things? The same thing? We're gonna need some clarification, stat!

Man, I so wish I were gaming press sometimes. I also want to know if all this product tie-in is a reaction to Halo3, because I wouldn't mind drinking out of an Old Snake Slurpee cup anytime soon. Especially in the summer.

And dotn worry the MGO game is free with the game and theres not even a subscription either. You will definetly have to pay for furthere maps and stuff, though.
An iPod being used by Master Chief in outer space would be very out of place. But im MGS4 is a-ok. The game wont be worse by the inclusion of that I can assure you.

@Sloopydrew: MGO comes with MGS4, for free. You're going to be able to buy add-ons as DLC, but the MGO that comes with MGS4 will be a fully-featured multiplayer component.
As far as the "purchasable weapons" are concerned, that might be a misunderstanding. The game has been advertised as have 70 weapons, so we'll have to wait and see.

It looks like the product tie-ins are going to be at least as bad as Halo 3 (I was going to type, "put Halo 3 tie-ins to shame" but I think that's an impossible feat). I'm worried about in-game product placement (iPod, etc.) and purchasable weapons (if they really are paid downloadable content). I'm also worried about online being a separate purchase and this turning into a $100+ game.
With motorcycles, energy drinks, iPods and alarm clocks this is actually looking more like a big James Bond movie release. Hope it works for them and doesn't backfire. After the dust settled I think the excessive marketing wound up somewhat hurting Halo 3.

So that explains that trailer we saw of Young Snake in the Middle East stage...drinking Regain probably temporarily de-ages Snake, allowing him the full peak of his abilities for a limited time.

If anybody noticed in the credits of MGS3, a Triumph logo was in it. I assume that they modeled EVA's bike after a Triumph or something. If you watch the credits to MGS3, it's there though.

Yes, wouldn't we all. This complacent, saccharine bullshit everyone is buying into, is slowing down progress and is slowly killing the games industry. Oh yes, it's selling gargillions but just because something appeals to mainstream society doesn't mean it's good. Casual gaming and the wii is the gaming equivalent of reality television and celebrity gossip magazines and football. Rant over.

just completed GTA and, as you know, there's still so much to do... such great fun... but reading your log causes me to put the game down and prepare for this!~ i'm even more excited for MGS! argh! the hype is gettin' to me

Anyone else notice how beleaguered Kojima looks. It's rather iconic in that it reminds me of the John Henry folklore. He did his job with all that he had until it took the very breath out of him, and he collapsed victorious. Hopefully he won't echo the folklore and die as a result.
I can relate to that look. I've had to teach myself so much in my field of study and more times than not, I've come out of the experience not with great grades, but with some valuable lessons.
Cheers to you Kojima for trying your best! It's sort of nice and reassuring to me of how human these guys are from time to time.

I can´t wait to get this game, it was the main reason i got a plasma and a PS3 and at last is coming out. Too bad i can´t play it in theater, but i hope my plasma can keep it up...
