Rockstar Support Suggests 12-Step Fix For GTA IV Lock Ups
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:30 AM on May 2, 2008
The number of PlayStation 3 customers who have been affected by Grand Theft Auto IV system freezing may be happening to a "limited number" of the user base, according to Sony, but that doesn't mean it's not a very serious problem. The proposed fix, as suggested by Rockstar technical support, is also serious. A twelve step, system feature encompassing process, according to a report from GameSpot.
The extensive and unconfirmed fix requires that one disable auto saving, one's internet connection, DualShock 3 vibration, the PS3 information bar, and Media Server functions, as well as deleting the PS3's install files, save files and internet cache. It's comprehensive, to say the least.
We would definitely suggest letting us know if you're affected by the issue and if you find the suggested fix to be successful or unsuccessful. In the meantime, we wait for an official, certified fix.

Have a 60gb PS3 (UK), got the game at launch. Played for around 30hrs, no problem. Then decided to try MP. Now by default I don't sign into the PS3 network so when I selected MP the game wanted me to sign in. I did. Then the game locked up (completely, had to manually switch the PS3 off the PS button did nothing). I tried this about 5 more times after a reboot. Still locked up. So I thought I'll sign in BEFORE the game loads.. The game gets past most of the loading screen but then stalls on the final black screen with "Loading.. and the mission". At this point the PS button IS still active but quitting the game makes the PS3 beep twice and reboot.
Tried about 3 more times stalled of the loading screen every time. Tried without signing in.. SP worked fine.

Dude... this really really really sucks.. Is it a defect in the game? or the 60gb consoles?
I was sooo excited to play the MP but I haven't even seen it once since it just locks everything up..

I've connected to Multiplayer for, like, 1 minute. And then it goes back to single player with the playstation connection error. My ps3 always sign's me out of psn, but not as much as when i'm playing GTA IV. Really good game. But not a good without multiplayer :(.....

The next generation starts when... you uninstall, wipe your saves, turn off a bunch of stuff, reinstall, turn off a bunch more stuff, etc..
I might as well play the 360 version if I have to start over.

@not_tom_brokaw: Considering some of the solutions I've been reading online, that diagnosis seems to be a very possible reason for the freezing. Nearly every solution I've read online asks to people delete files on the HDD to allow GTA IV to save it's data unfragmented.
Personally, I haven't experienced this problem on my PlayStation 3, and my buddy hasn't had any problems with his Xbox 360. If I were having this problem though, I would probably wait for an "official" solution. Trust me, you paid too much for you PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360 to screw around with it.
Then again, it's GTA IV. Boy, I'm happy I don't have to make that kind of decision.

@not_tom_brokaw: I don't know about a defrag program, but I have been thinking about what could cause the freezing on both consoles and something tells me its bad save files since that would be the only thing the two systems have in common. Although I could be completely wrong and the freezing could be caused be a unique problem for each console but that seems highly unlikely, then again stranger things have happened.

@not_tom_brokaw:
Interesting theory about the files being fragmented. I always wondered if the reason my Xbox 360 takes forever to load up my arcade titles -- and even my online profile when I boot it up -- is that the hard-drive really needs to be re-organized and defragmented. I have the 120-gig drive, and it seems like something that could be a problem, but who knows?
I don't know if this is related, but ever since I got my Xbox 360 back from the repair center, my Xbox 360 doesn't seem to recognize that I own the full version of Puzzle Quest, even though I am connected to my online profile! I get these weird messages about having to install the full version, but when I go to install the full version, it says I already own it.
So weird. I finally figured out a fix. I have to click on purchase full version, then click on "download" the full version, and instead of clicking "play now", I have to click "continue," and suddenly, the game realizes that I own it, and I can finally play the full version.
I have to do this every time I start the damn game now! So dumb! (And of course, I only figured this out after deleting the level 49 character I had spent countless hours on.)

A gamestop employee told me (after I mentioned the freeze problem) that a possible reason why it's locking up is because the files are fragmented; and that it is compounded by the fact that none of the console companies have come up with any sort of defrag program. Anyone care to confirm/deny it?

This won't be fixed until Rockstar finds the actual problem. A patch is needed, not some stupid 12 step "fix". The problem seems to be that they didn't test launch models when testing the PS3 version. That's an oversight on their part.

Not exactly a great return on investment.

I'd hope a fragmented hard drive isn't going to cause the crash. The data should still be good just read a bit slower if fragmented. Having a background defrag process is a good idea though.
While we shoot the shit about possible causes I'd wonder if there is some connection between the online capabilities of the game and the fact that millions of people are hammering it at the same time. What if the game is trying to upload/download some background data but the server response is corrupt/truncated and causes a crash.
Just a thought.

I do find it strange that the PS3 doesn't have a defrag program. I often put videos and mp3s on my harddrive, and then delete them later on. This last weekend I was actually searching for a way to defrag, for prevention's sake, but of course there is none.
So I have an idea. Let's all stop whining for in-game XMB, and start whining for a defrag solution in the next PS3 firmware update.

@kylo4: @red: Sorry guys, I didn't mean to generalize. Whatever you decide to do, be careful. I heard that deleting the game date for GTA IV and simply re-installing worked for some people. Many Sony products like to use FAT32, which very much does have the issue of fragmentation. The PS3 internal drive's format appears to be a mystery as far as I can find, but it is possible that it uses a file system that is very resistant to fragmentation.
In any case it shouldn't cause an actual crash. You'd see it more in things like slow scenery popups, or maybe a momentary pause when walking into a new area or turning to look at something for the first time. In extreme cases, a noticable pause when switching radio stations. Delays on things that would load from the disk.

Given that this problem mostly effects launch 60gb PS3s and add about a year of use. Most users PS3's by now are almost full with Videos, Demos, Music, and Images. Also given that GTAIV use both Installed Data and System cache, I can see how this is a problem for fulled drives.

Sounds bad... I hope I don't have to use a fix like that for my 360. Autosave is completely broken in GTA IV on my 360. If I have autosave enabled, it never actually creates a new autosave file after mission completions, it just says that it does. Then, after playing for hours, and returning to the loft for a save regularly, I turn off the console. Next day, viola, my save file has been replaced with an hours-old autosave file. WTF??? As a result I'm forced to play with the Autosave feature off, which is a major hassle. Haven't had the patience to wait on hold for more than five minutes, so no- I haven't bitched to R* yet.

I havn't actually had a problem at all with the 360 version.
I knew someday the PS3 would need the fixups that PC's need and now I see defragging? Soon antivirus? I mean this is what you get when you bring console and pc gaming this close. Although with your PC you actually have control.

I think the best advice is still to wait for the patch, maybe only try this once following the EXACT steps, because I heard some people bricked their PS3s by trying the uninstall fix too many times, but this 12-step "fix" points to that there might not be a patch if this somehow makes the game work. But I don't think this is something people should do just to play 1 game, hopefully R* still has people working on a patch instead of this kind of "fix" that might not solve the root problem and requires people to disable so many features.
I have heard some reports of the exact same freezing problems on the 360 but it's a lot less widespread and it hard to confirm if they are just signs of RROD or caused by the game. But I don't think x360 users have been vocal enough if they still have the freeze issue, esp the one that makes it so you can't even get past a cutscene. R* seems to not even really acknowledge or know about the reports on the x360.

If it was a fragmanting problem on the 360 you could copy your profile and save to a memory card and disconnect the HDD. There would be no issues thereafter.
Don't know anyone who has had problems but if you have had this on the 360 try it out.

@Ethyn:
They are hardly being lazy. Any changes made to the main game code could potentially lead to changes in the save files. This would mean that anyone installing the patch would lose their game progress so far. Not a small issue !!

Funny, everyone is criticising Rockstar. Surely the blame lies with the hardware manufacturers. If they stuck to one hardware spec instead of adding or stripping out hardware features this wouldn't have happened.
Also, remember that this game was certified by Sony prior to release (basically Sony play through the game at their offices in Liverpool, UK.) At this point Sony check the content and gameplay and check to make sure it works on their systems correctly.

@irnchriz: If it were the hardware, wouldn't this issue be present on other titles as well?

Hmm...as I would recall PC Gaming gets knocked on for all the 'fixes' one has to do to play, and console has triumphed in this department, is this a sign of the times?

Are they fucking kidding? How about they try this, I know it seems radical but:
Step 1: Download our update that fixes the lock-ups
Step 2: Install the update
Step 3: Enjoy the game

So far, I've experienced it on four different PS3 systems and it's been great. This rare issue definitely sucks and it looks to be affecting just as many 360 gamers. Unfortunate!

Step 14. Buy another 360.
Step 15. Buy another 360.
Step 16...
I kid, I kid.
By the way, yes I understand it's annoying that Rockstar don't have a patch yet (and yes it's probably more annoying when they give out advice like this that doesn't help at all) but it's only been what, a few days since launch? At least give them a couple of weeks to figure out what's going wrong and sort it out... it's only a video game, not a nuclear power station control system, you can do without it for a few weeks.

@Boxelder:
The same for me. Have a 40 GB PS3. Had minor problems with the game freezing for a second and freezing complete one time. Turning off network connection while playing singleplayer helped plus i feel like i have a more consistent framerate. It's funny while playing multiplayer online i haven't experienced any of this problems. Seems like Rockstar should look for the bug in the network connection routines. Maybe it's a problem caused by too many updates, which made the testing of the game a bit a mess... However, i'm sure there will be patch soon.

I have an 80GB unit and used the following options: Deleted Browser cache and cookies, turned off internet and the media sharing, turned off autosave and vibration (since I use the Sixaxis).
The game was great for a few hours and than in some really intense scenes it came back, but not too bad. The best part is, that I clocked 8 hours and 18 minutes of gta in one sitting.

@Big World: Well this is purely anecdotal but I know about 15 people with the 360 version on various 360 models and none of them are having freezing issues.

So where's the official Kotaku poll on this so we can see just how "all over the internet" this issue is?

I had freezing issues on the second day of gaming. But nothing sense then.
PS3 60GB
I do not care how "limited" the affected are. A problem is present and needs to be addressed. I may not be having freezing issues at the moment, but I am in constant fear of it locking up because it was happening to me earlier. If I cannot save because I'm in a long mission or something I start to stress out hoping I make it to the end and save. It hasn't happened yet, but it will severely piss me off if I have to redo a mission because of system/software failure.
This is just sad. I remember playing Vice City for HOURS, pausing the game when I had to do something other than play and leaving my PS2 on for days straight. Ah, the good ole days.

It's entirely possible that GTA4 was thoroughly tested and yet this crash wasn't detected, even with a filled, full-time testing staff throughout the life of the project. Once it hits the streets, it receives MUCH more play-hours in just days than it did in the years it took to make the game. Considering the rarity of these issues (although, as far as I'm concerned, it's 100% because I can't play the damn thing), I think it's not unbelievable that this crash was simply not encountered by the devs.

My game froze earlier tonight. On the load screen with the last mission in the corner. Poked around on the ps3 and saw that the saved data had multiple saves of the same mission. deleted 'em all but 1. worked fine after that.

60GB I got for my B-Day last April, no problems at all with either freezing issues or online connectivity issues. *knocks on wood*
I really do hope they come out with a fix soon, I'm getting tired of halfassed BS for both systems, we pay good money for unreliable hardware and glitchy software. That really sucks.

GTA4 is so resource demanding, it's like a burn-in test program. Maybe the consoles that freeze have failing processors or RAM at particular memory addresses not commonly used. All the complex calculations will also make the system run pretty hot, possible causing chip transistors to short.
These can be possibilities as there's no rhyme or reason as to which model or revision of console is affected (PS3/360) and the majority of consoles run GTA4 without problems.
Then again it could be a hardware component from a particular vender, which was installed sporadically and not installed based on any SKU or MFR date. That would be bad record keeping though.
Is GTA4 utilizing processor features or chips not used by any previous games?
I don't know, just some thoughts.

I am having major problems with my PS3 version. It has frozen on me 5 times this morning.
I WILL NOT GO THROUGH THIS 12 STEP PROCESS. ROCKSTAR, YOU NEED TO COME UP WITH A PATCH ASAP.

How many PS3 owners are having this issue? I'm having infrequent crash issues on 360, and I'd bet I'm not the only one.
