Sony Responds To GTA Sales, Seems Pleased
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:20 PM on May 2, 2008
While any and all GTA sales are good news for Rockstar and Take-Two, a little higher up the food chain Sony and Microsoft are fighting a war over which platform gained the most from the game's release. Stakes are high: no game this big has ever released on both platforms simultaneously, so whichever picked up the most sales (or even sales momentum) could be seen to have struck a mighty blow in the struggle for console dominance. Sony have been the first to claim "victory" in the initial stages of this battle of the platforms, issuing a press release today boasting of an increase in hardware sales, while also calling upon not merely their own chest-beating, but comment from GameStop and, strangely, commenting gun-for-hire Michael Pachter.
Following its highly anticipated release on April 29, 2008, Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) today announced that, as expected, the demand for Grand Theft Auto IV drove sales of the PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) entertainment system within the first 24 hours, continuing the strong legacy of the franchise on PlayStation® platforms."From our position, the launch of GTA IV has been tremendous in driving traffic to our stores, as well as providing a vigorous lift in PS3 console sales over this time last week. We attribute the growth to a huge fan base of PS2 owners who see this title as the trigger for the PS3 upgrade they've been planning," said Bob McKenzie, Senior Vice President, Merchandising, GameStop Corp.
For more than a decade, Grand Theft Auto has been closely aligned with the PlayStation brand, and previous GTA titles have sold 30 million copies in the United States alone, according to the market research firm NPD Group.
"I think brand loyalty is going to kick in for Sony, starting today," said Wedbush Morgan industry analyst Michael Pachter. "There is a huge installed base of loyal PlayStation 2 owners who have been looking for a reason to upgrade, and they have strong previous ties to the Grand Theft Auto franchise on PlayStation platforms. Add to that a number of other big exclusive games for PS3, including Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, and SOCOM: Confrontation, to name a few, and it seems like Sony's in a great position right now."
IGN.com, which scored the game a perfect "10", wrote, "For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colours, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner."
"Grand Theft Auto fans who love the game grew up on PlayStation and we believe that rich heritage will be a deciding factor for many gamers at retail," said Peter Dille, Senior Vice President, Marketing & PLAYSTATION Network. "This enthusiasm for GTA IV, combined with the excitement behind Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet, and Resistance 2 will further drive PS3 hardware sales."
The launch of Grand Theft Auto IV is the second blockbuster release for PS3 in April and follows the April 15 debut of Gran Tursimo™ 5 Prologue, the fifth installment of the world's best-selling racing franchise and an intense precursor to Gran Turismo™ 5.

Maybe, but I dont recall MS paying out the ass to get those songs, do you? You cant speculate that MS will win in the long run until you know what the DLC is and how much its going for. Simple as that.

@globones: Yes, they pay for it because they're dumb, not because they find the service to be better than that of the competitors to the point of finding the fee negligible.
Here's an example of what one of the competitors has been offering for GTA IV. In this case, free online gaming has been for the loss.

Again, you are speculating. Of course MS will get a boost in LIVE, they packed in a 1 month free subscription. Its if those people remain after that month is over is what counts. Besides, how do you know their invested payout will cover the $50 million price tag? Lets not be too hasty here.

@globones: My time on the Playstation Network has made me happy I can pay for a service as good as Live.
Peer to peer FTW. Developers needing thier own servers means I can't play games like Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistance online anymore cause they shut them down which is a bit annoying(seriously that games been out only a couple of years), but if I want to go back and play Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow or Mechassault it'll still be available online.

@globones: No worries. I think he's right though - Microsoft has a lot more to gain over time than the PS3 due to the structure of XBL. Whether people like XBL/the 360 or not, that much seems obvious.

I'm sure the 360 version of GTA IV will outsell the PS3's version. but even if they sell the same number of copies, Microsoft still wins.
1) they will up LIVE subscriptions
2) they will sell MS points for DLC
Sony gets a one-time payout, but Microsoft gets the initial pay-out like Sony, plus 3 times later one: LIVE and at least 2 future DLC packs.
So when it comes to who will come out on top in terms of GTA IV both short and long term, sorry Sony but ... Microsoft FTW

Someone asked why "Prologue" was such a big deal. That person clarified that it was a Gran Turismo game and to offer a comparison he is saying that GT games are huge sellers. Ultimately it's like asking why is "Halo 3: Prologue" selling so well? It just shouldn't have to be asked due to the franchises immense popularity.

A lot of my UK friends seems to have bought the PS3 version, while most US friends have bought 360. I think when all the numbers come out, they will reflect this. Hell even if they don't, it's just as creditable as what both Microsoft and Sony have been saying so far.
Either way, 70 - 90% of my friends that are online and playing a game on the PS3 and the X360 are playing this game. I think we are going to see some DLC for the PS3 down the road as well just because it's so popular on both platforms. It might even be the same X360 content released a few months later (hmm, the world is starting to reverse itself!).

It only makes sense GTA would push more PS3 hardware than 360. The 360 has already had it's major titles after all in Halo 3 and Gears. If people are buying the title for 360 it's likely because they already have a 360. Add on the fact that worldwide the PS3 GTA sales will likely trump 360 given Europe and 'Other'.

No, he is actually middle of the road. Not accurate mind you, just middle of the road.
Look at January where he predicted the 360 would top the PS3 in sales. That is only one of many instances where he favored the 360 only to find sales figures or trends disproved his opinion.

@Captain Impulse:
He asked why GT mattered. I gave that response as a way of showing how meaningful the GT series, even a partial title like Prologue, is to the sales/user base. That should be fairly obvious.
Quoting it in such terms rather than by mere numbers better defines the impact on the public as regards importance.
