Soul Calibur IV Ups Its T&A Quotient Again
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 8:40 AM on May 15, 2008
The newest issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine reveals another soul in the Soul Calibur IV character roster. Like new ladies Angol Fear and Scheherazade, both designed by well known Japanese guest artists, the newest addition to the Soul universe comes courtesy of Gantz creator Hiroya Oku. As you can see, the fighter known as Shura sports four swords, two on each hip, plus ample and prominent cleavage, in front and back. They certainly have a "type."
We expect that much higher clarity in-game shots of Shura will become available, officially, at Famitsu.com in the coming days. Until then, squint to your hearts content.

@luketheobscure: I´m mature enough to have a girlfriend, family and friends like you said, and i don´t think it would be a problem to play this game; In fact, my two sisters really like playing Rumble Roses (the perfect example), a game my girlfriend bought me for birthday by the way...It´s just a bunch of polygons, for God´s sake, it´s not a BangBros Movie...

The last Soul Calibur game I played was SC2. You know who I thought the hottest-looking character in that game was? Talim. She was also the female character with the smallest breasts. Why did I think this? Because unlike the direction that they've decided to take with basically every other female character, Talim actually looked like she could be a real woman.
Is it so hard for video game developers to put women in games that don't have the proportions of Barbie dolls or porn stars? To be perfectly honest, it would be a refreshing-- no, relieving to see some fat people in games. This unrealistic portrayal of the human body has gotten way out of hand, as far as I'm concerned. This factor alone has been enough for me to shun a series I formerly loved, and I seriously hope developers put an end to this trend soon.

@Garro:
I believe these are the same women who puke their guts out after eating and get boob jobs when they're 18 because they see that an entire generation of men are infatuated with images of women so out of proportion they wouldn't be able to walk upright.
And actually, I do enjoy anime now and then, just not the mindless tripe that panders to horny teenagers (and I've known plenty of teenagers in their 20's).

I have kept my mouth shut on the subject of SCIV, but this is just ridiculous. Yes, I realize that the VAST majority of Soul Calibur's fanbase is male, but for Christ's sake! I am a girl and I like Soul Calibur.
This is just a little over the top for a not GTA game.

@Garro: Did you just insinuate anime is entirely about giant boobs? O_o
But on your second note is exactly one of the reasons the extent to which this game is going is quite ridiculous. I mean, if all the characters in Gears of War wore G-String bikinis I'm sure some people would love it, but I'm sure it would make many of the guys and girls who play it feel quite awkward about it, even if they normally don't mind some skin or somewhat overexagerated characters in games. It's not that there are a few characters who are rather racy, it's that about 85%+ of the cast is that bothers me and likely many of the other people who complain.

Seeing no future in "orthodox" (?) fighters, Namco goes the girl-fighter path blazed by such titles as Strip Fighter, Asuka 120%, and Variable Geo. I can't blame them, personally I preferred the graphics to the gameplay.
Garro's right too, on both posts. A game isn't bad just because it's fanservicey. And I liked DoA2 (still waiting to try the newer ones... played 3 twice) because the controls were fast, fluid, and responsive, and it felt way more like martial arts than the games I was used to with super jumps, air-juggling, 30 hit combos, and of course the bare minimum in any fighting game, magic fireballs/waves/summons. Those are cool, but that's really not just "fighting" anymore. Also it makes no sense to never trap or reverse an attack in a fight.
@Palladium:
Hey, don't blame us, man. DoA is mostly guys. We get a girl or two per game.
And yeah... shame about Guilty Gear. I loved the X series because it WASN'T one of those 3D games, and did so well in the old style.

This is hilarious, see, most of you will come in here making boob jokes. Or, complaining that SC needs breasts and star wars to sell it's games.
The funny part is, the rest of us fans mature enough to gracefully accept sex appeal will be enjoying a kick ass fighting game. See, I don't think my shit smells any better then the rest of yours, and I freely admit to enjoying eye candy. While breasts and star wars don't inherintly make for a good game, the converse is not true: breasts and star wars don't inherintly make a bad game.
So, I'm going to be purchasing a mighty solid fighting game with characters I love, and some sweet new designs that are more than easy on the eye.

Why do men not have an issue with all being portrayed as Mr. Universe in a majority of hero roles, but when it comes to a female portrayal, its "Won't someone please think of the children?".
Interesting point.
I am getting a little annoyed with how far they are taking it. I don't want to be viewed as a joke when I try to play this game competitively (if I decide to).
SC has always been a pretty deep 3D fighter, it's discouraging to me if I'm playing it and people who don't know the game would be judging that the only reason I choose Cassandra is because her tits look as though they are going to burst through her top.

@EtherealDragonz: Because society forces the victim role onto women in a variety of ways.
Sidenote: There's actually a pretty interesting theory as to why, from a survival standpoint, societies often do this. Patriarchal cultures with protected "weak" women (e.g., victimized, defended, etc. etc.) had more available wombs and thus were able to spread.
But back to the point: because our culture says so. Silly as it is.

@luketheobscure: Dude you are really just digging yourself in here. Again, you obviousley don't run with the anime crowd, or have gone to anything akin to Comic-Con.
First, the chicks who dig SC and things like it aren't puking their guts out - that's such a glaring innacuracy on "anime culture" or whatever you want to call it's not even funny. Talk to anyone at a local high school or college anime fan club, or hit up a convention, and the girls are as normal as the guys.
Second, if they all had eating disorders, why can I hit up google for jokes about American cosplayers vs Japanese cosplayers? Those girls love anime and vidoe games so much that they cosplay as these sleek sexy women regardless of whether or not they fit the body type.
Check out Basilisk. Tits? Oh hell yes. But, it's one of the best series out there because of its story and character interaction. Also, Ghost in the Shell. Motoko is constantly in sexy outfits but it fits the character, and I would be just, amazed if you managed to call that series "mindless tripe" and mean it.

A Soul calibur character not wearing much clothing? How shocking =O
There's always a lot of characters that are semi naked. Not just girls either. Check and Voldo and Asataroth. Or Even Maxi and Yunsung will often have shirts undone (for no apparent reason).
Also let's not forget that all the guys in the soul calibur franchise except ones that are demonic or have something weird going on look like models too. Are you pure evil or a demon? No? Then you are a calvin Klein model. I mean even Voldo and Asataroth though crazy looking are in good shape.
I mean girls say they want characters with small boobs? Well I want characters with bald spots and beer bellies.
*Please note I don't actually want characters in a fighting game with bald spots and beer bellies.

I'm not sure why some of you so quickly come to the defense of improbabilities of character design when its a female design.
No one has issues when looking at the body types of Mitsurugi or Astaroth. I guess when it comes to a female chest everyone is up in arms, but if a guy has a massive chest and arm muscles, its completely normal despite the fact it would probably only be possible to obtain with performance enhancing drugs, if at all.
Why do men not have an issue with all being portrayed as Mr. Universe in a majority of hero roles, but when it comes to a female portrayal, its "Won't someone please think of the children?".
EtherealDragonz
Garro

@Nirolak: Well no, but SC character designs are more in league with anime than anything else. I mean, some people just aren't anime fans because they can't get past one thing or another be it sexy women, over the top action, or big eyes, etc. So in that respect, I'd say not being able to look past sexy chicks would have a degree of carryover to anime like Ghost in the Shell, Bleach, Basilisk, and maybe even Hellsing.
It's not fair to compare Gears of War to Soul Calibur in regards to clothing. I can see being uncomfortable, and that's fine, but people that fit that category on Kotaku have a tendency to start making pretentious jokes or declaring breasts as SC's only sell point. Anyway, Gears is a gritty military shooter and SC is an anime-esque fantasy sword fighter. The outfits in SC completely fit the style of the game. So, being uncomfortable with skimpy clothes in gears is waaay different from the phenomena in SC. It's Soul Calibur, not History Channel Presnts: Swordfighters in Time.

Your kidding, right? No I doubt that many of us are old enough to remember the forties (let alone when SF II came out)but I hope your joking when you said that "we all treated women better in the forties."
What is this generalization based on? The romantic notion that men suitors called on their ladyfriends during courting? Were men more polite to women back then? More chivalrous? Or, dare I ask, more moral???
Things have changed. Some for the better, some for the worse. But this is all based on personal perspective really. We obviously see a lot more "skin" these days, and women are now treated equally to men under the law, but I think you may be looking at this issue through rose tinted glasses.
Oh wait a sec . . . are we really having this conversation on a videogame website? My bad. I just can't help it!
Listen, it's simple. The games worth will be defined by how good the fighting game is, not by how much "cheek" or boobage" is showing. If boobies scare you, don't play the game.
I swear, some of the anti-boobie rants sound a bit like when an immature kid says girls are "yucky" and teases them because he is actually just discovering the opposite sex but doesn't know how to place his feelings.
Maybe all you kids are just still afraid of "boobies."

@Garro: You have a fair point there, it would be a lot more out of place in Gears, and I am not opposed to having attractive women (or even ones that are so oversized I don't find them attractive) in games, but I still think it's just the amount of them that's getting people. I mean there are lots of comments here like "Oh here's another one." and "What's next, just boobs?" while there are barely any normal female options. I mean Final Fantasy games often have half naked characters but they never tend to receive flak as they're not completely inhuman.
Soul Calibur is better about this though in some ways as quite a lot of the men are really popular with women from my and my friend's experience. Characters like Voldo and Mitsurugi get lots of complements for their looks, but if all the characters were like Voldo or even more extreme I'd imagine many of them would find it awkward despite liking Voldo as a half naked character, as the game would seem like a female targeted porno.
All in all I'm sure the game will turn out to be really entertaining but I wonder if it will lose as many sales as it will gain from going this direction, as even some diehard Soul Calibur fans I know feel really awkward buying this.
@Zim: In all fairness I've seen a lot of kotakuites (I haven't personally though) complain that all the Gears and UT characters look like juicers. I've even seen people complain about Chris Redfield.

The biggest issue I have with the constant deluge of oversized...characters...such as SCIV's current roster is that it sends a bad message to the general public about what gamers think of people.
Remember back in the days when games had a variety of characters with all kinds of appearances, with the one token "T&A" character thrown in?
Now it's like: "Seriously, does ANYBODY in this universe were clothing?"
And yeah, FF's been bad about it (not as much in FFXII)...it's one of the reason's playing FFX-2 could be awkward at times.

This is what Taki would've been had SC not had standards back when the series first started.

@EtherealDragonz: Well, on the subject of Soul Calibur in particular, the body types of Mitsurugi and Astaroth are perfectly acceptable in the game universe. Mitsurugi is a samurai who needs to be in top physical shape. Astaroth didn't use performance-enhancing drugs, but he's essentially a golem made incredibly strong through magic.
The ladies, though? My wife has been quick to point out how ridiculous Taki's catsuit is in particular. You'd essentially have to sew form-fitting breast pockets into the suit for it to be possible and for most women, bouncing around in an outfit like that which doesn't support the breasts at all would be an incredibly painful experience.
I would much rather see a female Viking character who looks more like Joanie "Chyna" Laurer, pre-surgery (seen here) than any of the current female combatants.
@Zim: I definitely think that the male fighters shouldn't all look like Calvin Klein models. Thinking specifically about the kind of build on men who compete in strongman competitions, I don't think a large belly would be all that unrealistic and I would applaud any designer who took that into account.

Hiroya Oku's Gantz is too awesome. I'm going to be collecting Dark Horse's translated novels when I get the chance, while checking out the second phase online. Oku is known for his unique artstyle and female characters in the series, so having him do a female character in Soul Calibur is perfect. I've gotta admit though, she looks like a cross between Shiki and Psylocke.

Yeah, there was no sexism, no sexuall repression, no pressure from backwards thinking, overly religious people to stay in marriages with wife-beating husbands, etc.
Boobies are evil.

I think this sudden slutty stratagem is great.
SC needed a facelift IMO and this is one of them.
Who here didn't go "Whoa!!" when we saw the first Taki pics!?
I for one love going "whoa!".
Massive bazongers..... Sweet tushes.. Nice tight camels..
They need more realism in it because after a nice fight Sophitia and Mina would be gleaming in fem sweat and so they would have to go to a nice greek spa where you could lather up their boobies and playfully towel whip them.
Of course the girl gamers could do the same to the men just to be fair.

I think her weapon style can open some cool styles. She'll have Mitsu range and then be able to switch to short sword right? Increase in speed but loss in range perhaps? That'd be cool if you could switch between stances or ranges with combos.
Something that disappoints me about these new characters is the lack of new country origin. I want to see some Persian styles or something else that I can't think of.
Regarding the boobs thing. Ugh, nevermind. I'm not touching this with a ten foot pole. People are way to touchy about this one.

Oh yes, and if this is indeed the last Soul Calibur, I like having all these new characters even more; nothing makes for a good finale like the creators going all-out.

Voluptuous women aside (I certainly agree with loligasm, however, that it's great that there are more women showing up in a fighting game; Smash Bros Brawl had 0 female newcomers and it looks like Street Fighter 4 will have, what, 1? Have they announced a second yet?) I like that they're throwing in all these new characters, particularly ones designed by outside artists. Not only does it provide a nice variety of visual style for the game, but it means we'll have lots more options for Create-a-Character fighting styles, making for more unique custom characters.

@damienchowder: I would say instant sale, but I realize this type of gameplay would grow old rather quickly (see DOA:Xtreme Beach Volleyball). Plus it would be rather hard trying to control the game with my controller in one hand and my joystick in the other >_<
Ok, enough of that.
I find the comments stating that SoulCalibur "sold out" rather unfounded, not to mention insulting to the game's developers. The reason I find in unfounded is that the T&A has always been in this series. Not only that but each subsequent installment has shown a growing amount of T&A (both figuratively and literally). Personally, I would find it odder if the series had decided to go in the opposite direction and toned it down a bit. For those of you thinking that SCIV finally brings the T&A factor to the point of being ridiculous: sorry, that happened in SCIII. If you are embarrassed that someone might see you playing the game and think that you are a pervert, I can only offer you this advice: You shouldn't care what other people think. If you know you are not a pervert then you're not. Simple, see ^_^
When I see damienchowder's above described SoulCalibur:Onsen, then I'll consider the possiblity of the series selling out (shortly after I preorder my copy, that is).
