There's A "Strong Chance" Silicon Knights Will Return To Eternal Darkness
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 3:30 PM on May 14, 2008
Ah, Eternal Darkness. Never really got into it myself, but I can still see why people dig it, and I appreciate that. There weren't many games like it last generation, and there definitely weren't many games like it on the GameCube. So what do Silicon Knights think about returning to the series, should they ever actually get the Too Human "trilogy" out the door? Surprisingly, SK boss Dennis Dyack sounds keen as beans:
There is a chance; we love all the games we work on. We don't want to be pigeon-holed [into a genre], we want to be known for strong content...There's a strong chance we'll return to it, but there's no announcements yet.No, no announcements, but the intent's there, and that's good enough for today. Thanks.

I would comment on this in more depth. I loved the original, and don't think it got nearly enough attention. A sequel on any system would be welcome.
But I am far to occupied, I'm afraid. Because you see, I am currently holding my second child, just born hours ago, and I just felt the need to thread jack this posting for my own selfish bragging.
So, my post is about half on topic. Not ALL bad, right?

It was originally being developed for the N64, but you know how things go with Silicon Knights. By the time they were actually finished with it, it showed up on GC.

Spoiler alert: While Silicon Knights is publicly working on Too Human, they've also had a team of hundreds working secretly for the last few years to create a new bathtub scene in which players actually feel the sensation of death wash across their very souls. In HD.

I played ED at 2am. Was very creepy, but nothing that turning the lights on didn't get rid of.
Then the doors started, and I had to open every door in the apartment.
Then the bathtub scene.

Please-please-pleaaase!
From what I've seen so far, Too Human's combat hasn't exactly won me over, it looks a bit too much like a One-Man Army vs. Hordes Of Cloned Bad Guys lootfest. And the last time I experienced Right analog stick combat was *shudder* Death By Degrees.
I hope the final product will be good, I really do, because the setting and premise have potential.
Eternal Darkness 2? There is no way they could screw it up. Unscrewupable, I tell you!
Anyway, talking about "a strong chance" sounds as close to an official commitment as it gets.

I didn't like Eternal Darkness as much as most, but it did have huge potential, great voice-acting, intriguing story, etc. What turned me off was returning to the same levels again and again in different times. It felt like a clever way to get around the space limitations of cartridges for the N64, which I'm guessing it was as the game was originally being developed for that console. Still, I'd welcome a sequel and wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be one of the best survival horror franchises ever with the space and power of current-gen consoles.

Why the hell does it have to be Eternal Darkness? Really? Why can't they just say, "Yeah, Eternal Darkness -- we'll make another game like that someday, maybe."
People need to stop wanting sequels. Sequels get embarrassing.
And I mean, "Eternal Darkness" is a pretty lame title. Putting a fuckin' "2" after any title with "Eternal" in it is kinda moronic. Even more than putting a number after "Final Fantasy" -- I mean, at least with "Final" it seems like it's meant to be ironic.

I'm cautiously optimistic. Who knows if Silicon Knights has that kind of magic left in them? I mean we've all seen how RARE has tanked in recent years. However, if the game lives up to the original then I'll get it no matter if it's on the PS3, 360 or Wii.

@hagridore:
Then you didnt get far enough.
SK got MAD props from me when they decided to throw the Canadian Firefighter in the middle of the Gulf War my way. That was the most surprising and fucking BEST character of almost any game ever.
Once you're playing as him, it almost seems like everything else in the game was training to try to survive as him. I was breezing through it (loved every second) right up until playing as him stopped me cold. It got hard, it got gritty, it got messy. Found myself low on ammunition trying to use the fire axe to survive, freaking out because no matter what I did, I couldnt get that sanity meter to go back up enough to keep me alive.

Eternal Darkness on the 360 HAS to have an Insanity Effect that makes your console get the RRoD... then get better 30 seconds better.

So the first time I played Eternal Darkness was after I took some strong acid. Then the screen melted. I looked down to find that I am squatting on the couch's armrest, muttering franticly to my friend "is that real?"
I fucking love this game.
Aside from all that, this game has some of the best writing in a video game. Simple descriptions were haunting, the storyline was unique and not afraid to reference Jung.

Dude, lol, you should have finished his story. What happens to him is pretty terrible.
You start to notice a pattern amongst everyone who comes in contact with the Tome. They all DIE.
If you had continued, you would have gotten to play as:
A knight during medieval times
A member of the family who got locked in the insane asylum
A WWI soldier
An Indiana Jones type dude looking for treasure
Im probably missing a few. But just as soon as you were getting tired of/emotionally involved in one character, bam, untimely end.

Great news!!! Eternal Darkness is my favorite Gamecube game right behind Metroid and Zelda. It was awesome switching between different characters and time periods. It was deep, had a great story and it was challenging yet fun enough to keep you going. There was exploration, a magic system and weapon combat. Don't forget the mind tricks the game played on you when you went insane! My heart dropped when the screen turned black and it said my game was lost! Would absoulutely LOVE to play a sequel on the Wii if the controls were done right; it would be nice in HD on the 360 too but there'a a lot they could do with the Wiimote for an Eternal Darkness game.

I'll add - either way, why on earth would they keep this in switching from N64 to Gamecube? It's not like they could re-use any assets from the N64 version (they would have looked horrible). So they'd have been basically starting over anyways, other than perhaps storyline and overall design aspects.

@Sloopydrew: I disagree entirely. For one thing, the game didn't have HUGE environments. I'd say Ocarina of Time had more landmass, and that had no trouble fitting on a cartraige.
Aside from that, what are you talking about? Every single level was different. Even when you visited the same places, they were radically different - such as the church that becomes a WW1 hospital, or the ruins that collapse and open up and close different paths, adding new rooms and areas. Despite reusing the locations by name, the actual maps and objects in those locations were very different. So no, there is no way this was a "space saver" method.
Personally, that was one of the things I loved best about the game. It helped to tie the story together because these few locations became very important, and you got to see them from different perspectives during different time periods.

POSSIBLE SPOILAAAR!!! RESPONSE
@Komrade_Kayce: Not /everyone/ dies. And as technology advances more and more, more of them have a greater "chance". Early on it's "Dead", "eternal torment" "squishification of a really nasty sort.."... but as soon as the revolvers an OICWs come into play things tilt in humanities favor. Sure there's one case of insanity and a confirmed death, but others from the modern era were luckier. "Indiana Jones"-dude got away the cleanest. His impenetrable aura of "Awesome" proves to much for the hordes of the Outer Regions.
Also, "Eternal Darkness" was extra noteworthy for having a badass and likable Canadian. I know, weird. (;p)
