Viva Piñata: Trouble In Paradise Will Use Xbox Live Vision Camera
Posted by Kotaku US Edition at 2:00 AM on May 14, 2008
The leaked screens we saw yesterday were indeed for the new Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise. Rare's cooking up the sweets-laden Xbox 360 title for a September 2008 release. The sequel adds feature full co-op both online and locally, more customisations for the garden, and thirty new piñatas.
Another interesting item? A "Piñata Vision" feature that lets players use Xbox Live's vision camera and printed cards to put extra content into the game.
In Trouble in Paradise, evil Professor Pester and his ruffians have deleted Piñata Central's computer records, threatening piñata parties and tasking the player with rebuilding everything by sending piñatas around the world. This is the part where I refuse to admit that I watch the TV show religiously and know exactly what this means.
Oops. Fact sheet after the jump.

Overview: The original Rare Ltd. team behind "Viva Piñata" has reunited to bring gamers "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise," the newest piñata adventure that invites gamers to return to magical Piñata Island. Unfortunately, not all is well on the island, as Professor Pester along with his gang of Ruffians have wiped out Piñata Central's computer records, which poses a threat to parties everywhere. To help Piñata Central, players must gradually rebuild the computer database by sending piñatas at full candiosity to parties all around the world. While thwarting Professor Pester's evil plot, players still build and maintain piñata gardens — using their creativity and imagination to attract, trap, protect, train and manage more than 100 different piñata species.Available exclusively on Xbox 360, "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise" reinvigorates a colorful and engaging gaming experience on the Xbox 360 platform. Now with full cooperative and online gameplay modes, the "Viva Piñata" franchise opens its doors even wider with a new game that provides hours of fun for gamers of all ages, fans of the animated series and animal lovers alike.
Features: Top game features include the following:
• Social. The world of Piñata Island is an inviting and rewarding place to be. Family members and friend now can share in the joy of creating a garden by simply plugging in an extra controller. The second player has access to all tools, actions and activities, but he or she also can collect magic by helping. Player two can spend magic by tinkering items, healing a sick piñata or filling a piñata candiosity meter. It's a new way to play.
• Customizable. "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise" allows players' imaginations to run wild by providing them with expansive freedom and choice.
o Your garden. "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise" also offers a vast level of customisation within your main garden. Now, along with planting grass, trees and flowers, and digging ponds and lakes, players can place sand and snow in their garden to make exotic species of piñata feel more at home. Players also can choose to enhance their garden with themed object packs — make your garden into a space centre, a pirate cove or a haunted graveyard. Buy objects to change the weather, or new toys for your piñata to play with. You have total freedom to create any kind of paradise you want!
o Your piñatas. Thirty-two new species of piñata can run, crawl, fly and swim into your garden in "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise." Large, small, fierce and cute, the new piñatas will join all your favourites for thriving activity throughout your garden. Among these new species are sour piñatas that will infiltrate and wreak havoc in the garden. In "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise," players can choose to either tame sours, or feed them candy to keep them sweet.
o Piñata Vision. A never-before-seen feature called Piñata Vision allows players to plug in an Xbox LIVE Vision camera and interact with the game through the use of printed cards that feature a unique barcode. With Piñata Vision, gamers can simply flash a piñata card up to the Vision camera, and the content will drop directly into the game.*
• Accessible. "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise" reinvigorates the franchise with additional game modes and features that make it even more accessible to players of all ages and skill levels.
o Just for Fun Mode. Designed for beginner players, kids and those just looking to explore Piñata Island, this mode allows players to jump into the garden and interact with the unique piñata world. In this mode the difficulty has been turned down and the fun has been turned up. Sour piñatas stay away, resident piñatas remain healthy, weeds don't plague your garden and you have an infinite chocolate coin bank account, allowing you to turn your garden into a veritable utopia of colorful creatures.
o Standard Mode. Presenting a challenge for experienced piñata gardeners and dedicated gamers, the Standard gameplay mode provides a more tricky option, where players must keep a watchful eye on their garden. Sour piñatas, feuding species, weeds, illness and limited money call for you to exercise problem solving and creativity to build and maintain an environment where piñatas can flourish and grow.
o Player Guide System. Replacing the traditional tutorial, the optional Player Guide System directs players through a series of loose goals to help them master the fundamental aspects of "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise."
o Show Off. Using the new photo mode in "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise," you can snap, print and upload pictures of your unique garden or customised piñatas showing them off to your friends. You also can photograph your piñata and turn it into a piñata card, share it with your friends so they scan it and put it into their own garden using the Xbox LIVE Vision camera.
o Piñata and character interaction. All your residents are now capable of performing dazzling tricks, which you can teach them using the new trick stick tool. Watch as piñatas play together, perch on each other and interact in new ways to make them more appealing.
• Spontaneous. "Viva Piñata: Trouble in Paradise" is a constantly changing world where anything can and does happen. Rivalries, injuries, illness and fights — if you turn your back, who knows what your piñatas will do?
o It's happening outside. Pester knows where your garden is, and he's got a few nasty tricks up his sleeve to make piñata life difficult. Foil his plans by sending your piñata around the world to save parties everywhere. Also, you must deal with new, untamed sour piñatas with bad attitudes and more troublesome Ruffians who will try to spoil your creation.
o It's happening inside. Pester will try to block piñatas from ever reaching your garden, but you can break the blockades and teach him who is in charge on Piñata Island. However, don't underestimate Pester — he's likely to make some personal appearances to attempt to put you in your place.Developer

i kind of agree with people who say rare should go back to nintendo but the N64 was the only good system by them after that it was downhill and only had pokemon to franchise. i recently bought an N64 just so i could play banjo kazooie again and i do not regret it at all but think about it, at the time N64 was the pinnacle of graphics and now (in my opinion) xBox is the pinnacle of gaming (PS3 fans keep quiet and go spam someone else i dont care) and so should be reserved for xbox also adding to the ps3 point ive have played a PS3 and i cant see any difference in the graphic quality and xbox is more fun PS3 is more hardcore gaming and serious guys who love shoot em ups

@okenny :):
There isn't nearly enough content in this to cosnider it a sequel. It's best described as an expansion pack.
Trust me, if it was a true sequel, there would be a "2" in it.

@homernoy: Oh I know, we have the original for PC too, and it's great. A very, very underrated game in my opinion that doesn't get near the attention it deserves.
I'm sure it'll come out for PC, I just hope it's not as long a wait as the first one was.

@akashhhhh: It is two though . I think they just want to hedge their bets :) If you read the feature list, it's clear to see that it's a successor (IMO).

@Techknow: LOL... yeah EoJ did this first. This is typical MS press talk. They speak with respect to their platform only if you ever noticed press releases before.
Here is the sad things about developers in general in the game industry. They are less versed about what's out there then you might think. So you'll often see them touting something another game might do already... not because they're ripping somebody off but because they're living under a rock :)
You may want flag Sony on this but I'm sure Wasp (or who ever may own these patents) would have sued someone a long time ago if they could.

@unit: I disagree about that one.
I'll most likely be getting both these games. I personally loved VP1, it was, as has been stated before, Digital Crack. They're also very kid friendly so I can play them with my daughter, which is a huge perk.

I hope they release a PC version of this game sooner this time around. Rare has a sure sale if they do.

Viva Pinata was probably the most under-appreciated gem of the last couple of years. I loved that game... and pretty much anyone i know who actually got past their gamer pride to play it loved it also. I'm soooo looking forward to a sequel.

@CYG: Says you. Did you even PLAY Viva Pinata? That game was crack. The most recent Perfect Dark game sucked so hard it collapsed on itself and formed a singularity. They are MAKING the new Banjo-Kazooie game. The rights to Goldeneye and Donkey Kong Country are both owned by different companies.
Haven't you ever heard the saying "You can't go home again?" Those days are gone. Even if they "Went back to their roots" it wouldn't be the same and you know it.

@StocDred: Wow, went wayyyy back in time for that one.
But since no one has ever played Animal Crossing, Pokemon Ruby or Sapphire, Pokemon Coliseum, Super Mario Advance 4, the pokemon trading card game, Rockman.EXE, Rockman Zero 3, or Mario Party-e, then we can safely assume that this is a never-seen-before idea.
So... e-reader-like capabilities for Viva Pinata 1.5 and the possibility of wii-mote like gameplay for Banjo Threeie... Can Rare and Nintendo just kiss and make up now?

@Techknow: ha! You forgot Pokemon Channel and Pikmin 2 (jpn only).
What kills me is that the e-Reader was universally reviled when it came out. Back on Nintendo's candy-colored non-game games, it was an abomination. But now that the concept is connected to Microsoft/Rare's candy-colored non-game game, we're supposed to be excited about it again.

@StocDred:
This is actually part of the problem with NEStolgia. People think the world began and will end with Nintendo. If you decide to turn your Wayback Machine a notch or two backwards, you will find the BarCode Battler, which came out well before the e-Reader.
Personally I don't give two shakes who innovated what, especially since people's memory are awfully limited in this regard. I care about who uses the feature well. If it works in this iteration of VP, then good for them.
Also, to people who say Rare should "go back to Nintendo" - what? Somehow the console they publish on is making their games not good enough for you, but if they were to magically release these on a Nintendo, suddenly they are good? Guess these are the people lining up for VP on the DS. There you go, it is on a Nintendo now. Buy it fan boy.

@Aprotosis:The people who say "Rare should go back to Nintendo." have a point even though it's kind of screwy.
Rare is trying to make games for a core fanbase that really does not give two shits to the wind about platformers, sims or the ilk, they want..sports, FPS's and the ilk. Why do you think Viva Pinata 1 sold for complete shit so much as to end up on the $20 dollar racks about 60 days from it's much lauded release? It's because the Xbox core user base ignored it and this was with a Halo 3 level ad campaign. Kameo again sold for shit and got made fun of everywhere, hell even PA made fun of it.
It's very hard for a developer who was raised by Nintendo to really fit in with the 360's typical core user base, where if they were Wii titles, not only would they get more praise and attention, but have much higher sales. It's a old, old issue.

@Aprotosis: Well sure, you could roll back the tech to anything... this isn't really a Nintendo > Sony > Microsoft thing... the point is more that Microsoft's shady-ass PR calling this "never before seen" when we had the e-Reader years ago and we're still (sort of) playing Eye of Judgment on PS3.
And everybody HATED the e-Reader, I say again. So trumpeting this feature now just tries to pretend that we haven't been down this path before.

@StocDred: I'm just amused that MS are managing to get DLC back into meatspace again.
No longer do we have the convenience of purchasing new piñatas online from the Marketplace (well, not that we ever could), but now we have trot down to our local retailer, buy a paper card (and a Vision camera) and scan them in manually...
Good for unconnected Xboxen I suppose.
