Ubi Demoer: HAWX Will Respond to Voice Command
Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on June 2, 2008
Eurogamer reports back from Ubidays 08 that a demonstrator let slip word that voice commands will be able to order around your fellow fighter pilots in Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.
"Demonstrator Andrei Costin spilled the beans at the recent UbiDays event in Paris, but avoided elaborating on exactly how it will all work; we expect it will be a blend of EndWar and Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter," writes Eurogamer.
Well alright, we got a hands-on at Ubidays. but apparently didn't liquor up/coerce/beat our demonstrator into divulging that kind of tidbit. Hrm. H.A.W.X. is due for a "holiday 2008" release on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360, giving everyone six months to figure it all out.
"Costin pitched the game as its own blend of arcade and simulation," Eurogamer added, "and told us that he hopes he can capture the camaraderie and exhilaration exhibited in renowned Hollywood tale, Top Gun."
Two words: "Jester's dead!!" Wonder if your wingmen will respond to mid-air bravado, too.

Oh my! I was wondering if they had voice recognition on End War, why they didn't implement it on H.A.W.X. Always nice to see when devs and me are on the same plane of tought.
My hype for H.A.W.X., rising...

I always read that as Tom Clancy's Tony Hawk.
I then get an image of some rapscallion avoiding police by grinding the wings of a Harrier Jet.

Oooh, groovy. I hope the wingman will be more capable than Garuda 2 was, or less whiny. I'll take that as well. But I can't wait to try out telling my wingman to form up. :)

@Candlejack: If you think that was bad play R6: Lockdown. If you told your squad to hold they would advance. If you told them to move or go somewhere they would hold. Of course that game had zero good qualities about it but that certainly didnt help it out any.

@Legba33: Um... So? Lens flares can be done LIVE too... On the PS1, in fact... See Final Fantasy 7, 8, and 9.

Will someone ever create voice recognition that works well?

@bobtheduck:
He's referring to the fact that a lens flare made in a photo editing suite is easily discerned from an in-game one if you work with image editing a lot.

Yeah, in flight Karaoke would certainly suit the "casual" audience that Ubisoft is gunning for lately. :)

They should include anger and fear in the voice recognition. And in flight karaoke.

@bobtheduck: Lens flares aren't new, but I highly doubt they went and perfectly recreated a stock Adobe Photoshop lens flare in their game.
I posted this as a tip but kotaku is too busy sucking Ubi's dick for inviting them to their special press event to actually do some real games journalism that isn't whoring themselves out as free advertising. Can't fault them for being like everyone else but it's the sad truth that games journalism exists entirely to advertise upcoming games.
Here's a screenshot for proof- the red LF is Ubi's bullshot, and I've added two more in photoshop.

Either way, its pretty evident the pic is either a bullshot or off a PC gaming rig from the distant future, LOL.

@Owen: As long as there's not a Boomer-like pilot in your squad, all should be well.
@metallicorphan: Yeah, I thought it was good. Very ahead of its time imo.

I'm with some of the others on this. Ubisoft have failed at attempting functional voice commands more often than other developers have ATTEMPTED it. It's never worked adequately, and as they usually put intuitive manual selectors for the same commands into the game ANYWAY, I'll just stick to those. Yay!

would it be hard create a program that can recognize your voice commands? we should be given the option to record our voices for each command so that it can be recognized easier by the game. just record small phrases like names of allies, attack and defend commands. nothing too complicated.

Oh what fun I had shouting "For the love of God do not ATTAAAAAACK!" in SOCOM, looking at those helpless team mates of mine running into certain death.

What we need now is cross game multiplayer. Imagine having Endwar, this flying game, and GRAW3 all really work together as one environment.

If voice recognition in H.A.W.X. doesnt work, then it is assured that END WAR is gonna suck big time!
Why use voice recognition when you have a keyboard anyway? Consoles made the whole gaming experience rectricted to 10 buttons and two analog sticks :(

Not saying Ubi never does bullshots *coughHAZEcough* but Ace Combat 6 has proven that flight sims are pretty freaking easy to make look good... The buildings are just boxes with flat textures because that's all you'd see from the sky, and the ground is just a terrain with a flat texture as well...
Plus, if you buy photoshop, don't you have the rights to use their effects however you like? Couldn't it be the lens flares you're seeing are simply pictures of lens flares used as... I forgot the term, but basically it's making lensflares in real time using pictures... I've done it in Unreal Editor quite a lot... They may have used a pic of the default lens flare and applied it to the brightest points on the screen.
Flight games where you stay high in the air are going to look realistic (in still images) from here on... PS3, 360... Hell, it's probably even possible on the Wii, if you put enough effort into it...

bob I don't care about the rest of the shot, but they're overlaying PS lensflares and that's retarded. The best part is the actual flare is out of frame, which just goes to further prove that it's A BULLSHOT.
For fucks sake, Occam's Razor, man. If the best explanation is "they edited it in PS" and the only explanation you can come up with is "maybe they copied Photoshop Exactly"...christ.
You freakin' Ubi Bullshot Apologist - people like you are the reason companies can get away with this shit.
