100 Games Lined Up For WiiWare
Posted by Mike Fahey at 1:40 AM on June 3, 2008
I've been giving the Wii a bit of a hard time lately as the new WiiWare games slowly eat away at my storage space, but of course this isn't anything a tiny SD card wouldn't take care of. How many WiiWare games can there be anyway? According to Nintendo of America's senior director of project development Tom Prata, more than a few, depending on your definition of a few.
Currently, there are about 100 games in development for WiiWare at various stages of completion.
The main saving grace here that will keep you from having to buy too many SD cards for backup storage, is that odds are not all of them will be worth purchasing. Of course without demos going up before hand we've no way of knowing for sure, but at least we'll have a revolver with a very large bullet capacity when we feel like playing a little WiiWare roulette. Hit up the IGN link below for a full interview with Prata.

Just pointing out, what I am sure was, a typo. I have seen other users correct typos in articles before that were then corrected. I wasn't trying to be a grammar Nazi. Not like I saw the typo and started yelling at my screen, or anything.
/shrug
As for the topic, space hasn't been a problem for me, as I never buy the virtual console stuff, and most of the Wiiware games do not interest me...at the moment.

Nice, but more space is needed. Unoriginal but true.

@Beano: 'Add-on'? Surely some mistake. You're thinking of the new Wii Lite, the thinner, smarter Wii that comes packed with a whole two gigs of storage capacity and in a range of pastel shades! Available in stores everywhere just as soon as Wii stops selling right the fuck out. (Probably.)
@neoepochx: Wow, we're so impressed with your restraint - as well as your psychic ability to know what's being released, beyond the twenty or thirty that have already been trailed. Personally I've bought 3 games already - based on my lack of restraint and my similar psychic ability, I expect I'll be purchasing 13.738 of those 100 titles.

Yeah... Nintendo needs to hit-up that storage issue soon!
@noliferuin (PSN): Yeah, no kidding. It's pretty much unavoidable. Remember what Japan launched with. I'm sure there's more where that came from.

lots of doom and gloom. 100 games in development sounds great to me. Lost Winds has been the most unique and well developed game I've played on the Wii to date. I look forward to more original games.

Nintendo's a little more stubborn, but they'll have to cave in to our demands for a memory storage solution eventually.

I don't get it. This is a wonderful opportunity for Nintendo to release a nice and expensive storage add-on. Don't they want my money anymore?

@Juthan: You're saying "not to be a nerd" when you're [justifiably] correcting poor grammar on a... well, let's face it, a site for nerds about nerdy things? I call excessive politeness.

@Juthan: Being a dyslexicated person (who has had that little tidbit of learning embedded into me at every single level of my schooling) I can indeed confirm that yes, it should be "there" instead of "their".

@Tonx: I'm sure they'll get it through their heads and make it work if we just keep pestering them about it. We just need to make sure we don't give in and just say "Oh well I don't really play this game *Delete*"

I'm giving up on the Wii. No GHIII or RB DLC and a lack of storage make me a sad Panda.

I read the interview this weekend - Nintendo has done a stunning job of denying people who want more storage space on their Wii any options. Which is sad, because there are a great many games deserving of a spot on the Wii's limited storage space. I had to delete Paper Mario last week to make room for new stuff. That hurt.

Yeah, there is hope that there will be some gems for WiiWare. I know that a good chunk of the games in PSN are flat out stinkers. And even the re-imagined classics (Double Dragon, TMNT come to mind )on Live Arcade made me realize that I had spent good money only to remind myself that I had grown tired of those games long ago. After playing through them once, the desire had been squished. That said, Puzzle Quest and Super Stardust kept me going for a good long time. Buy with caution!

@noliferuin (PSN): You are correct. I wasn't trying to imply that it was all shovelware though. A quick look at metacritic reveals that there is a general split of 20% good games, 60% average games, and 20% mediocre games on XBLA and PSN. I think it'll be similar for Wii too.

@okenny :): there'll inevitably be some good stuff, same with the PSN and XBLA. wii owners will have to learn to sift through the shit for a nugget of gold same as the rest of us now.

So VC games can be saved to SD card, but not Wii Ware games? Is that correct?
Also, how does Nintendo's term of "blocks" relate to megabytes? Is one block, one megabyte?

It doesn't matter if there are a thousand games lined up for Wii Ware. If I don't know what they are or if they're worth buying, Nintendo isn't getting my money. So they better give me some actual info or GTFO.

Sadly, I don't think Nintendo will give a hoot til someone goes "Hey..sales are dropping off! It seems the core audience who downloaded lots of games are out of space and can't be bothered!".

Whilst I agree that Nintendo should do something about the storage problem with the Wii, the hoo ha people make it out to be pisses me off.
I downloaded, played and completed Lost Winds (a brilliant game). Am I going to play it again anytime soon (say in the next 3 months at the very least)?
No.
Why would I keep it on the Wii if I started to run out of space?

Just DLed Dr. Mario on WiiWare last night, and found I'm down to 400 blocks available... I've used restraint in picking my downloads, but I don't know how many more games 400 will accommodate, seeing as Dr. Mario was almost 100 by itself.
Luckily, I have Mario Kart Wii now and really love it, so I can probably move MK64 off to an SD card or delete it. Ditto Mario 64 since I've had Galaxy. Truly, IMHO, spectacular updates that I'd rather play than their 64-bit grandfathers.
I'm going to go read the article now, hopefully there are details and some of these games are going to be great.

I can see the entire running out of space problem on the Wii. I have my front page entirely full of just each of the channels offered along with two game channels of Mario Kart and Wii Fit. My second page I have Zelda:OoT, Star Fox 64, Pokemon Puzzle League, and FFCC:My Life as King (all content) and have under 200 blocks left.

@_Hayko: It doesn't matter if I never play the game or not, I shouldn't have to delete it. I bought the game; I should have access to it. On demand. Not via redownloads or 15-minute transfer wait times.
It seems like a small thing to cry foul on, but in the age of digital downloads, you have to draw a line somewhere. If Nintendo is asking me to spend my money on their crap, they need to respect my purchase.

I'm at a precarious 101. Maybe if everyone spammed Nintendo with an email detailing just the number of blocks left. I mean I LOVE being able to just click right over to Galaga 98 and Metal Slug after playing FFCC:MLAK or No More Heroes. Why should I have to use an SD card for archiving instead of live play?
Maybe Nintendo thinks, "There is plenty of room for all of the great first party VC titles, what else do they need?"

@_Hayko: I see and understand your point but I have to disagree. I played and finished Lost Winds (loved it, great game) but I definitely wouldn't mind playing though all the "chapters" as one whole at some later date. I just bought a 500GB external drive for my PS3 and my dad bought me another for helping him set up his 80GB PS3 (for which he also bought a 500GB external drive) As it stands, I have a one Terabyte PS3 and I can still up grade the internal drive to 320GB, which I may do later seeing as how mandatory installs and some other game data have to save to the internal drive.
Anyways, I have no fear of running out of storage on my PS3 because Sony had the foresight (more like no-brainer) to understand the necessity of external drive and internal upgrade support. Nintendo...still being ignorant of today's technological advances shows once again that the core gamer wasn't in mind when the built the fucking Wii. Since when was 512MB enough for DLC? Technological idiots that own Ipods refuse to work with anything less than 30GBs...how could Nintendo totally blow it like this, is beyond me.
Nintendo...external drive support...not if...not maybe...WHEN?

This is an example of Nintendo being way to conservative, which is funny when you consider how different the Wii is. Online play and storage capacity are their two biggest problems, and they both sort of have solutions, but neither is very satisfactory.
I think they are going to address both problems, and soon, lest they completely turn off the hardcore gamers and are forced to completely embrace casual gaming.
I don't like the sound of Zelda's Cooking Challenge any more then you guys do, but if Nintendo doesn't get with it, it'll happen eventually.

@Juthan: Isn't it weird how nobody notices when you write something using proper grammar, but they do when you don't? I also think the confusion of "there" and "their" is about as common as the confusion of "it's" and "its." Man English is hard.

@HumanBomb: If I remember rightly, you don't need to spam Nintendo with email - if you just use the Nintendo Channel it will send basic data from your console, and I think (this is the bit about whether I remember or not) this includes the number of free blocks.
Hopefully they are doing something useful with this data (like for example, working on a firmware update to support USB thumb drives or hard drives; I'd recommend the former, even just 8GB is going to be easily enough for every decent WiiWare game ever).
@Striderhayasa - Phillyyakk on PSN and Live.: But if you did want to play Lost Winds again at a later date when the other 'chapters' come out, couldn't you redownload it? I know, it's a little bit of a pain, I agree Nintendo should provide ways of expanding the storage while still being able to run games directly, but it's not really the end of the world. (Yes it takes a while, so do it while you're eating a meal or taking a coffee break.) The main damage it's doing is to Nintendo; they're losing sales from this, even if (rationally) the vast majority of gamers shouldn't really have a major problem with it. They didn't realise the strength of the 'hoarding' mentality and they should have - it's pretty well-understood.
(FWIW, I am in the same position as _Hayko; I played Lost Winds and it is great, but I don't think it's great enough that I will replay it any time soon, so I might as well delete it. Except I still have plenty of space at the moment, so I'll leave it on until the time comes.)
@Narsil: Um, impatience any? The games will be announced week-to-week, and internet sites will also review them, so you'll have no problem finding out which are any good. There's no particular reason why you have to know about all 100 games now. (Yes it would be interesting - but it would also be frustrating, considering that (a) at two a week, some of them are a year away, and (b) given that they're in 'various stages' a large proportion are probably nowhere near ready even to make screenshots of. Some are probably more at the 'proposal' stage than at the 'game' stage.)
@zerokoolpsx: There are already 3 excellent games on WiiWare (Lost Winds, FF:CC:MLaaK, Dr. Mario) and that's out of the first three weeks. Maybe some of the others were decent too, I don't know. I really don't think anyone can complain about WiiWare quality at this point (there are some shit games; so don't buy them) although if another month goes by without any winners that complaint would start looking more justified.

100 games is a lot! I'm sure a bunch will be shovelware but we should definitely get some good quality games in there as well.
Regardless we need some type of USB hard drive or something... Im out of storage space on VC games and my save data alone...
And maybe i'm the only one but I would like them to release 2 VC games every Monday and 1 wii ware title instead of vise versa, oh well as long as we are getting good games I guess it doesn't matter and of course this is just my opinion.
