PC Huxley Officially Coming To North America
Posted by Mike Fahey at 12:20 AM on June 3, 2008
Webzen's massively-multiplayer online first-person shooter Huxley is officially heading to North America and Europe as NHN, Korea's largest internet company, announces that they will be publishing the title via their Western subsidiary, NHN USA. The game will be available to download and play via the company's www.ijji.com website in late 2008, while the 360 version remains up in the air at this time.
"Huxley is one of the most anticipated online games currently in development, and we are very excited to bring the triple-A title to Western audiences," said Whon Namkoong, CEO, NHN USA, Inc. "Huxley provides gamers with a unique and compelling experience that gamers everywhere are sure to enjoy."
Is Huxley still one of the most anticipated online games currently in development? There was a time when I couldn't mention online games without Huxley coming up, but now? Meh. Anyone out there still all tingly for some MMOFPS action?
NHN USA To Bring Much Anticipated Next-Gen MMO Shooter Huxley to North America
Leading Game Portal ijji.com, with More Than Six Million Users, to Host Breakthrough Online Game in Late 2008IRVINE, Calif.—(BUSINESS WIRE)—It's official. NHN USA, a subsidiary of NHN (KOSDAQ:035420), the largest Korean Internet company, announced today that it has secured the rights to publish the long-awaited Huxley in North America and Western Europe. Bringing online gamers everywhere closer to the chance to exercise their fragging skills against thousands of other players in the first twitch-action massively multiplayer online first-person shooting (FPS) game Huxley, the online shooter is slated to arrive on the PC via ijji.com in late 2008.
"Huxley is one of the most anticipated online games currently in development, and we are very excited to bring the triple-A title to Western audiences," said Whon Namkoong, CEO, NHN USA, Inc. "Huxley provides gamers with a unique and compelling experience that gamers everywhere are sure to enjoy. The revolutionary online shooter is a welcome addition to ijji.com, the site where millions of fans can play it later this year."
Huxley is the first massively multiplayer online (MMO) game to combine the twitch-based fast-action gameplay of a first person shooter (FPS) with the cerebral character development of an MMO to deliver an intense and exciting online entertainment experience of a complete MMOFPS. Players will be drawn into the genre-bending game play, riveting cinematic graphics and intricate setting of Huxley, where they will choose between two races, Sapiens or Alternatives and struggle to obtain a powerful energy source while fighting endless battles against the Hybrids, a mysterious third group born of the two races.
Developed by Webzen, Huxley will be released by NHN USA for the PC and be available to play on the publisher's renowned gaming portal ijji.com in late 2008. More information will be available shortly at www.ijji.com.

Gotta agree with Jihad there that APB has pretty much blown other 'anticipated' MMO titles outta the water for me ( 'cept maybe Warhammer... still looking forward to that). Hopefully there'll be some sorta free trial so that I can play and prove to myself, once again, that MMO's and FPS don't mix all that well.

If they release it on 360, I'm down. I just can't get into PC games anymore, I dig RTS's on PC, but thats about all.

This is one of those games that has been delayed for so long that you'd swear it had already been released.
It sounded awesome 3 years ago, now you just know it's going to be terrible.

I have the same feeling towards this as i do Left 4 Dead. I was excited. Once. And unlike alot of other games that get delays, these i haven't seen much improvement in with the delays, so it doesn't seem to make it worth while.

I'd love to see a demo. Some of the ideas intrigue me and I'd give it a shot if it is more about fps skill than mmo combat since the mmo combat seems to be a little too easy on people. Fps is much more my style for fast paced action.

When I first heard of Huxley and it's premise, I thought "It'll be nothing but chaos." Time passes, about I forget about the game I didn't really care about to begin with (anything mmo = bleh), with ever-so-small reminders popping up here and there.
After hearing this news, nothing has really changed. >_>

I was looking forward to this game as an MMO on the 360 but after seeing APB this game has gone right out the window. As for the PC version...once I build my gaming rig I may go ahead and pick this up but I plan on going the AoC route and I can only do one MMO at a time, at least an RPG.

I was "tingly" for a long time for it come to 360 more than the PC. I just thought it would be a cool idea/genre for a console game. I really can't commit to another MMO on PC though. Gotta sleep some time.

I look forward to another MMOFPS. Hell, I still fire up Planetside with a bunch of friends once week or so. I have yet to see another game that offers battles on the 300-400 person level, and pvp in the fantasy MMOs just isn't the same.
Give me a games with huge battles, sniping, zerging, tanks, and planes and you will get my (and 15 of my friends) $15/mo happily, whether it's Huxley or something that can ship less than 2 years from when it's announced.

I thought this game looked really cool back a couple years. A console MMOFPS really appeals to me, because its something all of my friends could do. Its a shame now though, seeing it as a game coming to ijji I dont have high hopes for it.
Not that all games on ijji are low quality, but I was under the impression it would be pushed into the market like other MMOs and heavily marketed towards console gamers.

a) APB might be semi-canceled, wasn't there a story that it might get bought by Take Two so they can make their grand theft online or something along those lines? Not more then a name change perhaps..
b) Huxley could be nice, the cool thing was supposed to be you could play cross-platform. Been too long though with not enough progression updates to keep the excitement level even slightly up.

@Dr.Chocobo: And to add to this, it wasn't worth it because in the end, what did you accomplish? Any little empire that was won in the day was destroyed overnight. That is what I feel made Planetside not so great.
That and I personally don't like monthly fees for a single game, so yeah.

Posted 1:51 AM 3/6/08
@LightI3ulb: I thought the premise behind Planetside was excellent. I'd have to say it probably had the best FPS massive multi-player "feel" to it. Everyone participates as a whole to get something done. Hundreds of people on the field of battle with a huge variety of things to do. Want to be a sniper? go right ahead. Want to medic? Sure. Want to hack into the other teams base? All up to you and your 50 something cohorts.
The game was a blast, but in the end it wasn't worth coughing up $10 (now $15 i think) a month. It would have been great had they gone the advertisement free to play route like Battlefield Heroes.

@Drake Lake: And would you prefer it the other way around? Where when one takes over a planet and it's taken forever? Sure they could do with a little achievments boosts, but taking over a planet already augments your base and vehicular stats.
The real accomplishment in Planetside isn't which planets you took over, but the team effort it took to do so. Here's hoping a game comes out like it soon- without its faults.

Screw Huxley!
All I want is a game exactly like PlanetSide with new graphics and bigger, separate, bases to take over (which require some sort of collosal offensive to caputure, and once captured have some sort of cooldown period).
I've played a lot of FPS and MMOs, but PlanetSide was the only one that actually felt like a proper war was going on. When you ran into action in a heavily contested area, with - literally - hundreds of other players it was like no other game I've ever experienced.

Hmmm, you have to wonder why add the MM part to the OFPS bit.
Planetside had a breadth to it that you couldn't achieve in a non MMOFPS.
The successful assault waves in Planetside utilised Artillery, Armour (APCs and Tanks), Air (bombers and gunships and scouts). There was also scope for Spec Ops with behind enemy lines strikes to disable key enemy functionality. So the scale of Planetside had obvious benefits.
I don't know enough about Huxley, but I hope it doesn't turn out like that Starship Troopers scene of the Assault on Klendathu (just loads of men with guns running forward).
Another thing is that with so many players, how do you make a difference? I frequently took part in deep commando raids in Planetside that let to an entire continent being taken. In part, it's why I don't tend to play the MMORPGs as I don't see the benefit of the MM part without just being a tiny cog in a big machine with no way to make a difference....

I was tingly about MMOFPS games until I played planetside.
It just doesn't seem technologically possible to mix those two genre's because FPS relies so heavily on low latency to achieve a consistent gaming experience.
Low latency and MMO go together like Doritos and Ketchup. (that is to say, it only works in Canada)
