Dawn Of War II Gameplay Footage
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on June 6, 2008
Could have been longer, yes, and could have been from a zoom level where we could actually see what's going on, but beggars (and hey, those of us dying for this game are begging) just can not be choosers. Obviously the graphics have been the subject of an overhaul since the first game, but I'm expecting them to make good on the promise of an evolution in gameplay (more along the lines of Company of Heroes and, you know, the tabletop game) than in visuals.

@Zamzoph: No, no no. I think you have that all wrong. The thing that make me come back for more is the ability of my Tau Fire Warriors to wipe the rest of you races off the face of planets in the name of the Greater Good. Or assimilate you, whichever works.

Dawn of War is my absolute favorite RTS of all time and runs on my meager ATI x1400. Sucks that this one has no chance of running well on my PC. :\

@darksteel1989:
I'm as excited as you are, if you not more, being hardcore about all things Warhammer and all, but remember that all the statements given so far does -not- involve multiplayer skirmish, which is surely to be the feature that makes people come back for more.

There will be an evolution of mechanics simply by virtue of the fact that there will be absolutely NO base building and NO tech tree to wade through. Though both are aspects I love about some RTS games, the lack of them in Dawn of War 2, in addition to the more RPG like mechanics (outfitting squads, leveling up skills, etc.), already make my anticipation of this game on par with Starcraft 2.
It's basically what I've dreamed of playing since I got my hands on the first Dawn of War. It all sounds like a real-time Warhammer version of those Japanese tactical RPGs, which I think is a good thing

Starcraft is selling on the name brand, but Dawn of War is THE best multiplayer space RTS out there.

Day one purchase for me, though I just know a bunch of people are going to be disappointed if there aren't any Tyranids. Actually, I'm pretty worried that a lot of the races from the previous games will get cut (brought back in later with expansions, etc). I only have so much money to go around.

@jihadjoe343: No. I read it. But the whole "no details" thing is why im HOPING, and not merely EXPECTING.

You must not have read the article because it sounds like the entire game is being reworked with a lot of things being pulled from CoH but made to work within the DoW play style. Just no details as it's still a ways out.

My first though whenever I see "Dawn of War" is "Fuck Yes" without fail. In other words, if the game gets cancelled, please put the word "cancel" in first.

Heheh, I just noticed something very early build-ish. If you look at the part with the bridge collapsing, you can see the tactical squad that was on it simply stand and continue shooting as they fall to their deaths =)

@darksteel1989: Whoa whoa, no base building or tech tree? Where'd they say this? I'd love for that to be true.
@icelight: You do realize that the Imperium could, if it so wished, choke the entirety of the Tau Empire with pure numbers? The only thing keeping the Tau alive, is that there are far more pressing concerns elsewhere. Shame the Damocles crusade was held back...

Also, we need a dark-heresy based rpg ala kotor already.

Starcraft 2 was my most anticipated RTS coming out, that is until I saw that trailer. Holy crap that looks amazing and if the gameplay is as good as the first DoW I will be very happy

Dawn of War makes me happy in the pants. I got so tired of the C&C/*Craft clones. The tactics that are forced in this game are so vastly different than the ones employed in the traditional build-n-hoarde RTS. Can't wait.

Graphically, this looks like it's going to kick the tits off of StarCraft 2, which is no surprise, given Blizzard's track record of keeping system requirements pretty low. But even as one who is excited about this, and who has played DOW and all of its expansions through more than once, I still don't see it topping SC2 in game play. I've played every RTS under the sun since Dune II, and I still haven't played one that matches StarCraft in its balance, pacing, replayability, etc. Good times for RTS fans these days, in any case.

Am I the only one hoping for a pause system somewhere aching to the original Baldur's Gate (not sure if it's in NWN as well, never played them much) which sorta simulated turns in a real time environment? I know it's highly unlikely, but I just think it'd be nice to have the option of TB-like gameplay considering from where this game comes from.

I declare this the greatest game ever made to have a II on it's name. Green skinned filth indeed. Starcraft 2, beware, you're about to loose your non-Korean gaming audience.

The Idea of switching gameplay mecanics from starcraft-clone to squad based is a Good Idea IMHO, mainly because when starcraft 2 comes out, any clone is pretty much fucked.

Graphically, it doesn't seem too different from the first Dawn of War but with a few added physics and animations added in. A bit more detail, but it's not like they went completely over-the-top next-gen ultra "OMG WHERE DID MY EYES GO!!??" bloom on us.
A few older PC's might be able to run this pretty well and here's to hoping that we don't need high-end dual cores or quad cores + dual 512mb SLI nvidia cards just to run it (Im lookin at you Crysis).

@Aurvant: Lots of poly's on those models. More importantly: the lighting is 10x better then the first Dawn of War. You going to need some high end video to get this game to run well. Relic isn't afraid to push the spec envelope.
I'm gonna say it too: WAAAAAGGGHHH!!! Crush the puny humies!

I'm excited for this but the timing couldn't be any worse I don't think. Really hard to imagine a time frame that SC2 won't totally make all other RTS entries and after thought. Maybe if this gets pushed into very late 09 or early 2010 and SC2 is out in like October there will be some mind share left for it. Just don't want to see this get forgotten about.
Anyone else notice though how awkward it is to say like 2010, 2011, etc.? Hope someone comes up with a better way to say those years since I can't think of one. Unless we're all going to walk around talking about that great summer we had back in ten.

@taftsearlobe33: That clip looked amazing? You got that from 30 seconds of blurry footage? It looks like its an RTS, and it could potentially be good, but I myself didn't see anything from that clip that would make me magically want this game.
