Dawn of War II: New Screenshots
Posted by Owen Good at 9:00 AM on June 9, 2008
GameInfoWire.com has about a dozen new screen shots of Dawn of War II up. These follow the gameplay video that went up midweek. I'm gonna keep my trap shut about the game. Warhammer 40,000 scared the bejabbers out of me and my basic set D&D friends when we were in school. Mostly because the only kids who played it had passes to the smoking pit and grew moustaches. So, here's one, and there are four full-size after the jump and the rest on GameInfoWire, and please don't give me a noogie or a titty-twister, sir. Owwww ....

the biggest thing i want to see happen to the DOW games, is more applicable to the armies, i've read somewhere that you'll be able to not only change the colour of your army, but individual troops, but i'd love to see this go further...
i.e. my favourite chapter of Space Marines, The Salamanders, would be bright green, with yellow or black highlights, and because they fit the archetype of a recognised marine chapter, this would have effects in game, so The Salamanders were raised on a planet covered in volcanos and fire for most of their year, and in the tabletop version, they got Flamers/Meltas cheaper/could field more heavy variants in a squad than normal, and this would apply across all the squad types, up to the armoured units.
this could also be applied to Black Templars, more of a focus on their chaplains and librarians being the leaders, giving them more AOE powers bolstering the troops, and Blood Angels getting assault troopers cheaper, Dark Angels getting bikers cheaper with the Ravenwing etc.
and don't think this would be limited to Marines... oh no... i'm thinking IG Catachan Jungle Fighters, resulting in most of the units being stealthed, but in order for that to happen, they can't wear the normal flak jacket armour/easier to kill etc or the Cadian Armoured Regiment getting Sentinel walkers and tranports cheaper, Ork armies could go for affiliating wiff Da Goffs to get better/cheaper close combat units, and Evil Suns would get buggies cheaper, Chaos armies could align to any of the four gods for their particular abilities, Tzeentch for magic, Nurgle for diseases and poisons, Khorne for close combat etc

@snakepliskin: The thing about Dawn of War II is that it's much more of a tactical game with a ton of RPG elements than a traditional RTS game, so it would likely offer you a vastly different experience than StarCraft II.
Here's some information if anyone's curious:

I've always found the 40K universe so interesting. With D&D 4 out, I might look into the role playing aspect of it, while waiting for this and the 40K MMO that's due out in a few years.

The first dawn of war was pretty damn fun but i think dow2 is slated for release right around the time sc2 comes out and i cant imagine me taking time away from sc2 for another rts.
I did always like the warhammer 40k universe though. The table top game was only for older nerds and rich kid nerds when i was a kid. I always wanted em i just could never afford em when i was a boy.

Wow is all I can say to the third screen. Looks amazing.
I bought and installed the original months ago and still never got round to playing it. Though the same is true of Deus Ex. I need to get round to playing these!

God damn...
The first of the series and it's expansions are one of the few PC games EVER to get my attention daily for about 2 1/2 years.
I pray that my recent RAM upgrade is more than enough to handle this game...

I've always been more of a tactical guy (ie: Myth) than a guy that could out-harvest-and-build you (ie: most traditional RTSs). The only RTS I was actually good at was Total Annihilation and that's because there were enough options (big-enough maps, varied terrain, powerful base defenses, huge variety of units) to compensate for the fact that I couldn't pump out the pee-wees/flash tanks as well.
Back on topic - this looks hot as hell and I'm willing to bet I'll enjoy this way more than SC2 (although I will buy both).

I am very happy with this screenshots.
Mainly because it will give StarCraft 2 some competition, and healthy and good competition against 2 of the most revered sci-fi RTS's still around is great for everyone, and ultimately everyone wins.
But most importantly, I am happy because it definitely looks better than the stupid RL version or Warhammer 40K, which is BORING.
WARNING: Do not attempt to play Warhammer 40K The Table Game, without a GIRLFRIEND first, if you do, loss of manliness will occur, and loss of interest in girls and saving money as as side-effect.

@Nirolak: Yeah i read about it the other day. Sounds interesting with the weapon drops and static squads. My problem, however, has always been that i can only play one game at a time and ive just been waiting for sc2 for a long time.

"FOR THE EMPEROR!" and all that. I loved the first Dawn of War, it was really exciting and the voice acting for the characters and the units really added to the ridiculous violence and fervor of the setting. But what sort of PC will I need to play the sequel? A better one than I have no doubt! Not that that's a bad thing. I just really want to play this.

@the-hypnotoad:
I still don't think the RTS genre has gotten better since T.A.
I play most new ones, I just always end up going back to it.
Saying that, the only new RTS I haven't played is Supreme Commander due to the fact I only just got a new computer that'll run it.

I have DoW and its expansions, but I never got hooked into it like I did with sc. Perhaps it's because I never really took the plunge into online competitive gaming, or the fact that I didn't play with my friends. Or maybe it was the squad-based combat. At any rate, I think I'm going to skip this one and hopefully play some sc2. (Hopefully sc2 comes out sometime...ever)

Sigh. I'm so going to be playing both this and SC2. Going to need to get a new PC, finally.
I still haven't even gotten around to finishing the single player campaigns on the last two dawn of war expansions.
@snakepliskin: I got a job when i was 14 so I could afford to buy my tabletop models. Could only afford a couple of blisters a fortnight, but it took me ages to paint them anyway. I must have spent thousands on them by the time i was 20... now they just sit under my bed.

Screw SC2. Yea, I said it. SC2 would have been nice to have a few years back, but after Dawn of War and Company of Heroes I just don't see it being worth it. As long as one of my computers can play DoW2, I have no need for SC2.

I guess I will buy SC2 because of the story and CGI-movies, but Dawn of War 2 will be the best RTS-game of 2009, no doubt about that.
No more boring RTS-gameplay which is revolving around base building and resource management, loot system, RPG-elements. This game is the sole reason for me to buy Windows PC next year.
I know this sounds like an advertisement but I'm glad there is company like Relic who never develop the same game twice.

@motogp: Better: it's an orbital bombardment - when in doubt, get your space-fortress to fire its space-warfare-scale guns at your planetside enemies!
Anyone wanting an in-depth look at this, all these shots and more came out in last month's edition of PC Gamer (the UK edition at least) with 4 pages worth of article explaining they way they're going with the game - going for more like the tabletop game with smaller numbers of squads, but with more customisation and the chance for units to earn veterancy that carries over throughout the campaign mode.

I'm looking forward to some of the persistnet elements that were mentioned in the big IGN articel, but I hope they stick with the fluff (mention of "acid chainswords" had me a little worried). I'm happy for them to go the more initmate route, with small squads and the whole "getting to know you" approach with the squaddies; that's what 40K was always about anyway. the Titans and superheavies should be left for Epic (although I wholeheartedly approve of a game at that scale too!)

@MantisDragon: wait til SC2 comes out, I m sure you'll change your mind :P . I just hope DoW II will be more like coh and less like DoW. Being able to reinforce squads anywhere makes DoW kind of stupid I find.

I'm very excited for DOW II, I just have to make sure that when I get a new computer it can handle it (and WAR).
Also, WHFB/WH40k aren't any more expensive than a current-gen console habit. The cheapest xbox360 set up with 4 four controllers and some games will run you ~$280 for the system, $120 for 3 more controllers, and then $50 for each game after that. So, with 3 games, you're looking at $550 and that assumes you already have the hdtv and cables.
If you want to get into the hobby/game, talk to someone knowledgeable at your local gaming store; they can set you up with the army of your choice for $300 or less and you can play on their tables with their terrain. Most stores will also give you building/painting advice.

Makes one wonder how Warhammer 40k RTS would really be if it looked like Supreme Commander. Now that would truly require Epic Rules that should include Titans, superheavies and thousands, if not tens of thousands of units on each side. That being said I hope DOW2 goes through with more unit customization which I hope includes creating chapters with each own unique bonuses and flaws.

Do Want.
The squad-based RTS/RPG system seems very akin to the tabletop game. I'm very intrigued on how "DoW without base-building" is going to work. I'm always ready to spend more time with combat than base management.

@Morgoth: No, I won't. I've watched the SC2 videos. It just looks like SC with 3d graphics. I got tired of SC years ago. DoW2 seems like it is going to offer the game play I want in an RTS now, SC2 doesn't.
Either way, my gaming budget isn't what it used to be. If I have to choose between one or the other, I will choose DoW2.
