Posted by Leigh Alexander at 6:20 AM on June 10, 2008
Firaxis is currently at work on Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization, a standalone for Windows PC, Take-Two announced today.
It'll be available in Fall 08, and the announcement says the 1994 title is being rebuilt from the ground up to take advantage of the Civ IV engine, adding new graphics, interface and features.
You still lead one of four European countries in conquering the New World, dealing with natives and the other nations and all that wonderfully bloody business. Here's hoping for smallpox blankets? Full release and screens after the jump!

2K Games Announces Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization™ for Games for Windows®
Sid Meier's Classic Colonization is recreated as a new stand-alone title in the Civilization IV® universe
New York, NY - June 9, 2008 - 2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: TTWO), announced today that Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization™, the next offering in the award-winning Civilization IV® universe, is currently in development at 2K's world-renowned Firaxis Games development studio. Conceived from the ground up to take advantage of the Civilization IV engine, Colonization will be available fall 2008 exclusively for Games for Windows®.
"We've received many requests from fans over the years to bring back Colonization and now seemed to be the perfect time to do that," said Sid Meier, director of creative development at Firaxis Games. "The Civilization IV engine provided a fantastic foundation for a new Colonization experience and allowed us to create something great for both new players and long time fans of the game."
In Colonization, players lead one of four European nations on a quest to conquer and rule the New World. Players will be challenged to guide their people from the oppressive motherland, discover the New World, and negotiate, trade and fight with both the natives and other nations as they acquire power and fight for freedom and independence.
As a complete reimagining of the 1994 classic, Colonization is a total conversion of Civilization IV that combines Civilization's addictive "just one more turn" gameplay with all-new graphics and features that add more depth to the franchise. New features, such as a brand-new interface, improved diplomacy options and the included modding tools ensure that Colonization will be the next great title from gaming's premier strategy game developer.
Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Colonization for Games for Windows will be available fall 2008 and has not yet been rated by the ESRB. For more information, please visit www.civilization.com
* Colonization does not require the original Civilization IV product in order to be played.

Colonization was simply a wonderful game.
I've already spent far too much time on it though.

@solar_tf: The original had the Dutch, French, Spanish and English. So probably the Portuguese will be left out.

oh so the game is actually Colonization but with the ''Sid Meier's Civilization 4'' name attached to it.
It's a really great idea. I remember it won numerous awards and was highly praised back then.

@sir_carrot: A new Alpha Centauri would be wonderful, as long as they don't simplify it like they seem to be trending towards. Put in more political options as well (more use of the Security Council? More chances to lobby for votes?), and it would be brilliance.
And make sure Planet Busters still make giant, smoldering craters out of landmass. Yes. That will do nicely.

Four countries? That means they'll be leaving at least one of the major colonizers (Spain; England; France; Portugal; The Netherlands) out of the game... probably Portugal or the Netherlands. The omission of either would already be a pretty big blow, tho.

The wiki entry on Civ: Colonization is kind of interesting...
It's curious that he chose to do a straight up remake of Colonization instead simply of the first iteration, or Civ 1.
I wonder why? Hmm. Probably still be fun.
A new Alpha Centauri would be great too... he must be saving that one.

Only if I can text-edit names.txt to change the commodities and specialists.
"Tobacco" -> "Hashish"
"Tobacconists" -> "Rastafarians"
"Master Tobacconists" -> "Voodoo Rastafarians"
(We had way too much time in computer class in school)

@Kamesen: I am not sure, it might be a modified (and simplified) version - it feels very similar in the demo.
Does this mean that the people in the last Civ posts clamoring for a 'back to roots' civ game will get what they were hoping for? I've never played the original, coming into the series quite late - I might have to get this.
I just pre-ordered Civ:Rev today, and I'm getting a new/old computer today. I can't wait to load Civ IV on it and get my Civ fix till revolution! This computer is too shitty to run it well.

I loved the original Colonization. What an amazing game. It still stands up today. Though, I probably only still enjoy it so much because of the nostalgic value. I'm really happy there's a remake in the works :D

One time I played a Civ IV game so long that the program eventually crashed when I tried to load the file because I had so many units on the screen. A shame too, I was about to conquer all of Europe and planned on declaring nuclear war on Montezuma.

I liked the first colonization well enough. But is this going to be distinct in gameplay the way Colonization was, or is it going to be more like the main Civ games?

You know, the first Civ I played was the Civ 2 port for the original Playstation. Since then I've played Civ 3 (all flavors) and Civ 4 (all flavors but BtS, so far) for the PC. However, I was not impressed by Civ: Rev...It is lacking something.

...and 2008 officially rides past 2007 in terms of awesome. That makes... hmm... let's see. I have to get AC (and a better processor), Spore, Civ4Col, E:TW, that argonauts game...
Also, graphical updates. Reflections and better water, denser trees, all-around texture fidelity boost and stylization... there is no way this won't be good.
On another note, isn't it high time strategy games, especially those based around the start of civilization, abandoned prebaked civilizations? After all, what sense does it make for Mr. Lincoln to run around in the Stone Age, writing emancipation proclamations for neighboring tribes on clay tablets? What happened to societal evolution? (Note: In situations with defined sides - like Colonization - this doesn't apply. But in games like Civilization or Age of Empires...)
'Tis time for factions in the ancient strategy genre to get the boot.

I still play Colonization on a regular basis. It shows it's age a bit, but it's a textbook example of great game design and replay value.
Now if they would remake Alpha Centauri... I miss terraforming.

Is there any justification for the Civilization IV branding? As far as I know, the two series are totally unconnected. Makes me annoyed that I just shelled out several of those GBP for the two Civ IV expansion packs, as this sounds far more exciting.
