Sid Meier Won't Turn His Back On Wii
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 9:20 AM on June 11, 2008
Sid Meier's not giving up on the Wii. In a recent interview with GameDaily, he said he and Firaxis think the Wii is "a fantastic platform, and have no intentions of turning our backs on it!"
He wouldn't confirm, of course, any plans for a Wii version of Civilisation Revolution but his positive response should be encouraging, at least, to Civ fans.
He was also asked about the possibility of a Civ MMO:
I'm exploring lots of exciting ideas right now. A Civ MMO is a really intriguing idea and we're spending time thinking about how we could make it the fun addictive experience Civ players expect. Beyond that I have some new ideas that are quite different from games I've made in the past - and that's all I'm able to tell you right now. Stand by for more information in the near future!

Honestly, i'm not a Wii or Nintendo hater but i think its kind of sad how every developer seems to feel like they've got to support the Wii. From a business PoV i can understand putting my game on a console that has a huge install base, but putting one on there just for the sake of it? Heh.
My imagination at this time of night is dull but i can't think of anything Civ related that would actually make any good use of the Wiimote. Maybe the pointer but thats not exactly accurate i've found.
But yeah, i'd prefer he did give up on the Wii. Civ games don't need waggle..

@DigitalHero: I think he should lure the Wii into a dark alley and beat it to death with a jagged scissors at then end of a baseball bat.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Wii O_o
OK, no really, I plan to give some a Wii to my niece this Christmas. God bless that system... it's not for me but it plays a role desperately needed in this day and age.

When I heard of Civilization Revolution I thought it was going to the Wii for sur since the closest you can get to the mouse. I still believe it should but by that time I'll probably get it on PS3.

Wii Civilize!
Play many different Civilization based Minigames using the Wiimote.
Move your Wiimote around vaguely to sow the fields to grow crops.
Connect the dots on a puzzle with a million dots to unlock nuclear secrets.
Use the Wii Fit Balance board to maintain "Political Balance".
Troops will automatically build and manage themselves.
Resource management has been eliminated, because that was confusing icky, and too hard.
Instead, you'll play a Bejeweled, and a variety of cheap flash minigames to gain the money you need, which will be distributed automatically in a way which guarantees you win.
Famous historical figures will be replaced with Mii versions of themselves.
The game comes packed in with a "Rake Attachment", "Pointer Attachment", "Magical Floating Hand Attachment", and a "Baseball Bat", just for the hell of it.
And, naturally, to play the way it was intended, you'll also have to buy a proprietary accessory that works with Wii Civilize alone.

I really loved Civ 4 so this might be good news. The less crappy, gimmicky Wii software, the better.

@CockroachMan: Except instead of resting your arm on a desk to control a mouse, you're holding your arm in the air to control the Wiimote. Hardcore games like Civ simply don't belong on this platform.
The Wii is pretty much a gimmick machine, aimed at getting people who don't play video games to play video games. The best games are simple and entertaining, but there's not much for actual gamers. Even Mario Kart, which I loved on Nintendo 64 and even GameCube, is so watered down that it's almost a step backwards; but with the WiiMote people can have fun without having too much skill.
@Walker: I completely agree. If ever there was a developer who should "turn his back on" the Wii, Sid Meier is him. It's great for some things, but not this.

I don't see why any developer could possibly turn on the Wii if they were even remotely sane. The install base is ridiculous.
What I DON'T understand is why so many developers just pump out complete shit for the Wii. What a waste of time.

The Wii is perfect for games that use a mouse as the main form of control.. So, it's perfect for stuff like Civilization.. :P

It'd be interesting if they could somehow combine Civilization and Alpha Centauri into one giant MMO game. It's difficult imagining it any other way without a ridiculously sized world or lame city-states gameplay.

@broomperson: @CockroachMan: rest your arm on a desk, the arm of a chair, or your leg like a real wii gamer.
the wii provides a fast accurate pointer, and everyone can agree on that.
it would, therefore, be the best console for a pointer-based game.
i would only buy a console version of civilization if it were on wii.

@broomperson: The Wii controls can be gimmicky if the developers chooses so.. but they can also be a great experience if done right. Metroid Prime 3 has the best controls I've ever seen on a console FPS and PES2008 Wii lets you have full control over your team like none soccer game was ever able to do before..
The problem here is that most developers see the Wii as an ATM Bank.. and don't see the real potential on it.

If the demo for Revolutions is any indication, it really belongs on the Wii anyway, what with the cutsey-ass graphics, simplification of everything, and annoying little cartoonish people speaking gibberish. That shit made me sick.

@ProdigalMoon: i don't understand why firaxis feels the need to simplify the game for consoles. If this is what they do to 360 and PS3 users, i can't imagine how gimped a wii game would be.

Some great strategy games could be made on the Wii. It's unfortunate that Nintendo chose to go with weak graphics this generation. Not for them obviously, but for the companies that wish to port to all systems. Some games just don't port too well with such a large graphical leap.

I wish people would make decent games for the Wii - it's easily the most mainstream console out there.
I bought Zack and Wiki for the Wii, because of all the hype about it and the return to point-and-click adventures... but it sucks _big time_. Most of the time you are just there to press A to skip through Wiki's incessant dialogue, and some of the wii remote actions border on impossible.
As stated above, the pointer of the Wii Remote is most like a mouse than anything else going (even the USB mice you can get for PS360, which are just awkward if you're not at a desk).
Nintendo should be interested in making PC-standard games like, if they want to take advantage of their tech and make money:
First Person Shooters
Real Time Strategy
God games (Mr. Meier!)
Even crappy casual games like Bejeweled
Not every game needs to use waggle! Use the goddamn pointer more!

Nah, RTS games like Civ seem like they should port very well to the Wii.
Scroll the map with the nunchuck. Hold down Z to bring up menus. Point and click with the Wiimote. Etc.
The biggest problem with a Wii port would be making online MP work.

Why people have to embrace or hate a console is stupid. It's 100% about software. And not the percent ratio of good vs bad games... but rather, the number of good games period.
The hardware has little to do with a game being FUN to play.
The only reason the Wii is so unpopular with "hardcore" gamers is because of all the horrible 3rd party games. Nintendo really needs to have some level of Quality Reassurance. If the Wii actually had games that were built around it, it would be just as worthwhile as the other consoles.
Unfortunately, however, 3rd party devs simply make a PS2 game, slap on some waggle and release it across both platforms.
Even if the games were "casual" even hardcore gamers would respect the Wii if it wasn't filled with half-assed ports and horrible games from 3rd parties.
