The Peter Moore Challenge
Posted by Brian Crecente at 10:40 AM on June 13, 2008
EA Sports head Peter Moore is not a man to mince words. That's why we loved him so when he was at Microsoft, he cuts through the BS and gets straight to the point.
In a recent post on his blog over at It's In The Game, Moore talked up his new studio alluding that EA Sports is primed to have one of the best years in its history. In particular Moore sings the praises of NASCAR, NBA LIVE, Madden and NCAA Football. He's so sure that this season is going to be unrivaled, in fact, that he's promising to get a new tattoo if they don't deliver.
Big talk Moore, but lets put a little reality into this pie-in-the-sky promise. Why not say that if you don't have an overall Metacritic increase (yes I hate review scores) on all four of those games you've failed to deliver and it's time to ink up? We've even found this swell logo for your possible future use. Let us know.

What criteria defines the "best year"? After all EA has a best year every year if its defined by milking a franchise for the least amount of work.

"EA Sports is primed to have one of the best years in its history."
That's not hard to achieve when you have no competition.

Well, Fifa Street has failed and Facebreaker is about to fail - so if EA is just scoring with its traditional franchises one might ask what they needed Peter Moore for.

Well he could mean best year commercially...If he wants NBA Live to stand against NBA 2k, then they have a long road ahead of them (gameplay-wise at least). They could rebuild the game engine from the gound up. Not sure if they can do that and release its yearly iteration though.
Did he say what tattoo he was planning on getting? I recommend that he puts in the Dreamcast swirl logo...He can even use it to hypnotize some people from Take-Two to get that merger they're boning for over.

@Peter-Moore: For some reason, I'm not sure you're the real Peter Moore.

I want my $20 NFL 2Kx games back. NFL 2K5 is the pinnacle of football gaming.

Peter Moore's words have meant nothing since the "lucid dream" speech a couple of years ago.

So if we, the willing sheep, buy these four games on Peter Moore's promise they're going to rox our sox, and they end up just being last year's games repackaged with a couple of new features, his "punishment" is getting a tattoo, something which he obviously enjoys? Wow, Peter, way to go out on a limb.
How about this... we compare the metacritic scores of this year's games with last year's, and for every 1% lower the new games score, Peter Moore has to cut off a digit. Finger, toe, whatever he likes. (I'd recommend starting with the second-smallest toe on each foot, he'll miss them the least.)
Only problem is by the end of the year he may not have enough fingers left to write his blog.

I see he doesn't mention NHL 09, because based on the trailer, it looks to be EXACTLY THE SAME as 08. The game already plays fine as it is, but can we PLEASE get true next-gen graphics this time around? (shaders, lighting effects & cloth physics maybe?) Oh, and maybe get a true Franchise mode? Is that too much to ask? If you've played NBA 2K8's Association mode, you understand the situation...

@ExarKun: Amen to that. I've tried Maddedn a few times in my life, but none have matched up to the fun I had with 2K5 on Xbox or the previous versions on my Dreamcast.

If Peter Moore is so confident that the new Madden is going to be so great why not put up something real, like the NFL license?
