Potato & Leak Soup

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:40 PM on June 16, 2008

To: Crecente
From: Luke

So! Lots of stuff happening on a Sunday night. Which is very unusual. Friday nights, you sometimes get news, as companies try and sneak bad press out after everyone's gone home, but Sunday nights? That's new. What's surprised me most about the whole thing however wasn't the timing, but the sheer volume of stuff that came out of it. Can't remember anything off the top of my head that compares. Sure, some of it sounds a bit patchy, and some of it sounds like complete baloney, but on the whole, a lot of the stuff checks out. I really feel for the guys at market research company Intellisponse - ie the source of the leaks - about now. I've a feeling this will be a Monday morning they will not enjoy.

Microsoft/Activision News Leak: The Round-Up

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:00 PM on June 16, 2008

Just wake up? Boy, did you miss a ton of stuff! Marketing research firm Intellisponse forgot all about standard internet security protocols and left a whole bunch of secret, yet-to-be-announced game information accessible to the public (first spotted by MMaRsu@GAF). Stuff that, you should be made aware, is totally unconfirmed. But also stuff that, from the looks of it, may well have been due to appear as official E3 announcements (for Microsoft) or official same-time-as-E3 announcements (for Activision). If you were sleeping, or otherwise missed it, catch up on it all by hitting the links below.

Valkyria Chronicles Statue: Alicia

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:00 PM on June 16, 2008

Valkyria Chronicles looks gorgeous. Couldn't care less how well it plays. So even if it ends up being a complete disaster, it'll still have its fans, who dig it for the canvas-painting graphical style and snappy re-imagining of WWII Europe. Fans who will, for example, buy over-priced merchandise. Over-priced merchandise like this 20cm statue, of the game's heroine Alicia, which goes on sale later this year for ¥7140 ($AU 68.96).

This Might Just Be The PlayStation Phone

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 9:00 PM on June 16, 2008

Sorry. The "PlayStation Phone". Because it's a lot more phone than it is "PlayStation". Letdown. Pictured above is the Sony Ericsson F305 phone, first in their new "F" series of devices, due for release later this year. The Unofficial Sony Ericsson Blog - source for this info and the pics - believe the "F" stands for "fun", because the phone not only features motion-controlled gaming, but also boasts the familiar "O" and "X" buttons, as well as a PlayStation control pad icon, suggesting that gaming is going to be made a primary feature of the line. If this is as PlayStation phone as Sony are willing to go (and it probably is), it's a smart move - actually branding the thing a PlayStation Phone, and going all-out on the gaming side of things, may not have been the smartest thing to do to the brand.

Afrika: Sixaxis Camera Controls, You Can't Drive

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:00 PM on June 16, 2008

Afrika details? Real ones, that actually tell you something about how the game's going to play? Wonderful. Taiwanese site GNN had a chance to play the game at a recent Sony press event, and are able to tell us all about it. Seems Afrika's driven by missions, sent to your camp via email, which require you to snap certain shots of scenes/animals (though it seems, thankfully, with no time limit). To get out into the wilderness for said shots, you have to use a jeep, though sadly you won't be driving it, as that's taken care of by your "AI/tour guide".

Don't want to watch 22 minutes of GameTrailers TV just to see some Resistance 2 footage? It's OK. You're a busy professional, and your modern lifestyle is hectic. You need your Resistance 2 footage in byte-size portions, which you can snack on between power meetings. Get just the wheat, the chaff be damned. So here you go. Above, the singleplayer footage, as Hale makes his way in a rather floaty manner through Chicago. After the jump, two more clips: one for some multiplayer footage, the other, on "possible Grim presence".

XNA Games 'Most Likely Less Expensive' Than XBLA Ones

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:00 PM on June 16, 2008

And now, the last of the leaked MS/Acti news items for the day. Included in Intellisponse's marketing/survey data was some information on Microsoft's User Generated Games program, which is what they were calling the service we know better as "Community Games On LIVE". The material says that it's a "new destination" for Xbox Live customers, offering "hundreds" of inexpensive games. Buying one "looks and feels just like buying anything else from Xbox Live", but most importantly, will be "most likely less expensive" than the "typical Xbox Live game". Hrm. If Microsoft wrote/approved that, it's a peculiar choice of words. For user-generated content on shoestring budgets (if a budget at all), shouldn't they be "definitely less expensive"?

Yug's 'Unofficial' GenCon Oz After-Party

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 4:00 PM on June 16, 2008

ag_party.jpgLooks like Yug from Australian Gamer is holding a gathering of sorts for the folks heading to this year's inaugural GenCon Oz. According to the invite, it's technically the third such event that Yug's held, but I'm sure he doesn't have anything against pen and paper or tabletop gamers.

If you happen to be in the area of Fortitude Valley on 5 July, you might want to think of dropping by.

You Don't Know Jack Probably Announced For The Wii

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on June 16, 2008

Yes, more Intellisponse leakage! Another game mentioned that we (or at least I) hadn't yet heard of was a new version of You Don't Know Jack. For the Wii. Not much more to add than that, other than this is a very good idea, and it's baffling why it's taken this long in the console's lifespan for someone to come up with it. No word on a release date or developer/publisher (going off the other leaks, though, we'll presume it's Activision), but they do mention a $AU 42.58 price-point.

Racing Equity Probably Announced

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 2:00 PM on June 16, 2008

I say "probably" because, yes, this is from the same marketing leak we've been having so much fun with today. One of the games mentioned in the leak (which, FYI, was courtesy of Intellisponse) is called "Racing Equity", a "next-gen" racing game that's *groan* "focused around a rebellious counter culture scene". Details beyond that are a little vague, but the game seems to be built upon the notion that "spontaenously and without warning, people turn up en masse and transform city centres into impromptu tracks. Roads get blocked off and the race takes place". Seeing as today's leaks are coming almost solely from Microsoft and Activision, you've got to wonder whether this is something Bizarre are working on.

EB Games Oz Selling $15 Fallout Triple Pack

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 1:30 PM on June 16, 2008

Before you get excited, no, it doesn't contain some magical pre-release copy of Fallout 3. The "triple" of the pack is Fallout: Tactics, and while not as tasty as the other games included - Fallout and Fallout 2 if you had yet to guess - it's not a bad deal for $14.90.

According to the Atomic forum member who spotted the deal at EB at Bondi Junction, it's part of the retailer's half-yearly sale.

New Tony Hawk Game To Employ Motion-Controlled Peripheral?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:30 PM on June 16, 2008

More from the "marketing leaks". And more Activision stuff. There are several listings on the site for what is probably the next "current-gen" Tony Hawk title, which has three working titles: Amplitude, Adrenaline and, awesomely, Tony Hawk's Huck Jam. The game is slated to appear on 360, PS3 and PC, and will make use of motion controls via a custom board controller/peripheral (maybe this one?). Great, more hunks of plastic for the living room floor! Can't wait.

Kotaku AU's Game A Week 2: Zafehouse, Zombie Invasion Simulator

Australian Post Posted by Logan Booker at 12:30 PM on June 16, 2008

zafehouse_wide.jpgHere's the second title I'm working on for Game A Week. It's called Zafehouse, and demands the player keep a bunch of survivors alive for 120 hours (five days) from zombie attacks, while hunting for weapons, ammo, food and other people. It will be primarily event driven, requiring the player to deal with infections, supply shortages and freak accidents. Securing buildings will be an important part of play, as not everyone can fit in the starting house!

I'd say I'm about 15% done at this point, so a lot of work to do before Friday.

Start thinking of game ideas guys! I still have a few ones I'd like to try, but I'm keen to see what you can come up with. Remember - seven days of development time only!

Update: I didn't even notice the game's random name generator had spat out "John Romero" for this particular run-through. To put this in perspective, there's a 1 in 4418 chance of this happening.

Microsoft Avatars Will Be Playable, Licensed?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:30 PM on June 16, 2008

Courtesy of the same leak that's spilled everything else today, there's a little more information to be had on the rumoured introduction of Microsoft's Avatar system. Some of the marketing material mentions that, like Miis are in stuff like Wii Sports, the Avatars will be implemented into "various arcade and retail games" as playable characters. Also mentioned are "hundreds of clothing options", a feature which is interesting when you look at the sample pic attached to the leak (above) and - provided it's real - see one of the characters is wearing an Incredibles shirt, suggesting that unlike Nintendo's offering, there'll be the option of clothing your Avatar in various licenced outfits. Maybe, and this is total conjecture, even a little Master Chief costume?

Marvel: Ultimate Alliance II Details, Platforms

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:30 AM on June 16, 2008

We already knew it was coming, but amongst yesterday's MS/Acti marketing leaks were some further details on the upcoming Marvel: Ultimate Alliance II. The game will be set during Marvel's recent "Civil War" story arc, with players forced to choose sides in the conflict. There'll supposedly be "over 20" playable Marvel characters, including the Hulk, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Venom and the Human Torch, and players will be able to "fuse" two character's powers together to give one character hybrid abilities. The release mentions the game will be appearing on 360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP & DS.

Powers & Titans Probably Announced For 360, PS3, PC

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 11:00 AM on June 16, 2008

I say "probably" because, yes, this is from the same marketing leak we've been having so much fun with today. A new title listed on the site is called Powers & Titans, and is apparently for the PS3, 360 and PC. Described only as an "action game", you're a super hero able to choose your own powers (no mention of licenced characters), and have to employ the right powers for the right fight/situation. While a singleplayer element is described, it sounds like the focus is on multiplayer, with players able to form "super teams" online and then perform missions, like "invading a city" or "protecting a convoy". A little like City of Heroes for the trigger-happy, then.

Rumour: 'Trioxide' To Allow Console Games To Be Played On PC?

Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:30 AM on June 16, 2008

Caution: this comes from the same place as all the other leaks we've posted on tonight, so now's a good time to remind you they come from a marketing company. Performing surveys for not only Microsoft, but other companies (ie Activision) as well. Which means that while some of this news seems genuine - and imminent - other stuff may just be pie-in-the-sky (like this). Got it? Great, let's continue. Something popping up on the site is called "Trioxide", and claims it will introduce "the ability to play the latest console games (ie Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, etc) on your PC". How? Don't know. Why? Don't know. Is this even legal/doable? Probably not! We don't have much more than the name and the mission statement. But there's two prices listed: $AU 52.11 and $AU 317.96, with the more expensive price and boasted controller use seeming to imply that - if this is real, and not, as seems more probable, a figment of some marketers imagination - it'd be a kind of actual device, and not just standalone software.

Spider-Man Wii Games To Use Wii Fit Balance Board, 'Web Shooter' Controllers

Posted by Michael McWhertor at 10:15 AM on June 16, 2008

The same source that leaked details on unannounced Microsoft and Activision products has tons of data on a huge line-up of future Spider-Man licensed games. Two of the titles—which appear to be planned as Wii exclusives—take advantage of control schemes unique to Nintendo's console, with Wii Balance Board support for one, a unique "web shooter" controller for the other.

In Spider-Man: Agile Warrior, players control Spider-Man's feet via the Wii Balance Board to make him jump, soar through the air, climb walls and kick and cartwheel foes. The other Wii exclusive title, known as Spider-Man: Webmaster looks like it will ship with a game-specific controller that lets players flick their wrists to shoot web balls, aim their webs via the Wii Remote and use gestures to swing across Manhattan.

But that's not all. There are a total of fourteen potential Spider-Man games in development to some degree—though some may simply be nothing more than concepts. The full list after the jump.

Ultimate Band for Wii: Music Games in a More Casual Style

Posted by Owen Good at 9:50 AM on June 16, 2008

Included in the flood of leaks that sprung earlier today was a flash video showing gameplay in Ultimate Band, a no-peripheral music game due out from Disney for the Wii by the end of the year. (The video did not address proposed versions for the PS2 or DS.)

Watching through it a couple of times, this is going to be far more casual than the gameplay in Rock Band or Guitar Hero. The instrument actions seem not to have any connection to the soundtrack, which plays throughout, with vocals. The songs in the video were familiar but all were covered ("My Generation" by The Who, "Fell In Love With a Girl" by the White Stripes, and "Our Time Now" by Plain White T's, all sung by what sounded like the same female vocalist), and the performers were cartoon avatars rather than motion-capped actiors.

Guitar Hero World Tour's New Guitar Control Revealed, Priced

Posted by Owen Good at 9:20 AM on June 16, 2008

Also in the batch of leaks going up on NeoGAF and elsewhere: Guitar Hero World Tour (aka GH IV) will feature new controls on the guitar neck, plus a raft of A-list artists including, curiously, the Doors.

"New touch-sensitive guitar Neck Slide opens up the entire guitar neck for unbound solos - shred how you want", says the leaked docs. Word up to this point had promised an upgraded guitar but no details.
The game will also roll out with drums with cymbals, and a mike, which we knew. The drums are wireless and will have quiet pads.

At this rate, GH and Rock Band enthusiasts will have a garage full of obsolete instruments, and this kit is likely to set you back $AU 191.56. But that money also buys you tracks from Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Foo Fighters, Smashing Pumpkins, Korn, System of a Down, Ozzy Osbourne, Interpol, Muse "and dozens more".

More Screenshots, Gameplay Info for The Conduit

Posted by Owen Good at 9:00 AM on June 16, 2008

The fact developer High Voltage Software has yet to find a publisher for The Conduit, which is the FPS Wii-exclusive title, hasn't stopped it from announcing a first-quarter 2009 release. The Conduit Information Centre site also has a nice little cache of screenshots, one is above, some are after the jump. IGN put up four new ones on Friday.

Also, a Q&A with High Voltage's software development director gives a few more details on the game itself, including:

• Three modes for online play. Offline play is single-player. LAN multiplayer likely. They're trying to get voice chat online.
• Enemies use portals to bring in reinforcements; destroying them will be a key.
• Set in fictional Earth of the near future, the story takes on a dark conspiracy-theory tone that unravels pretty fast after you get sent to investigate an extra-terrestrial encounter. Think the X-Files with stranger weapons.
• Your adversaries are called The Drudge. I battle drudgery every day, lemme tell ya. ...

Rumour: 36 on Team Ninja Quitting, Planning Lawsuit

The Itagaki-Tecmo pissing match may have hit a new level of animosity. 1Up, attributing only "word on the street," reports that as many as 36 key members of Team Ninja are walking, and preparing a class-action lawsuit against Tecmo regarding unpaid bonuses they were due for completed games.

Earlier this month Tomonobu Itagaki, who leads/led Team Ninja, announced his intention to quit Tecmo, effective July 1. In his announcement he was PO'd about a company decision not to pay bonuses on a completed game, so, chances are his comrades feel the same. Tecmo, for its part, says the bonus to Itagaki that is in dispute was approved by a previous management team, not the current one.

Other nuggets gleaned from the ongoing mining of the Xbox marketing leak by Xbox 360 Fanboy:

• The next Call of Duty will be known as "World at War" instead of CoD5. There are five box concepts leaked. There's speculation that calling it World at War is an effort to keep the lifespan of hot-selling CoD4 running as long as possible.

• Forza Motorsport 3 is so huge that the limitations of the DVD format became an issue. It will include 400 cars, 100 tracks and must ship on two discs. Car deformation was also mentioned as a feature of the new title.

UCSD's Softwhere 2008: A Few Roundups

I've got my own opinions on the '___ Studies' ghetto, being part of it myself — though an attempt to create a field of 'software studies' is, at the very least, not burdened with Cold War politics. Anyways, there are some concise (and not so concise) appraisals of the event floating around. Ex-Rockstar Devs Making WiiWare Balance Board Game

Posted by Owen Good at 5:00 AM on June 16, 2008

First Balance Board Blog got hold of a rather bizarre YouTube clip that features -- women in jogging leotards? dudes with horrid combovers in corsets and black socks? -- running to a 60-Minutes style stopwatch. Nothing in the vid suggests it's a promo for a game, much less one using the Wii Balance Board, so methinks viral marketing straight away.

But BBB got hold of the video's poster and subsequent confirmation that PheroseSoft, a seven-person team made up of former devs for EA Canada Burnaby and Rockstar North, is developing something called "WiiMove". It should be available by WiiWare sometime after October this year, Balance Board Blog reports.

A representative of PheroseSoft told BBB that "the game looks to put an unexpected slant on the Wii Balance Board". Ya don't say. The video's after the jump.

Where'd All the In-Game Colour Go?

I myself am rather fond of candy-coloured palettes, preferring them to drab medieval "realism". One blogger thinks he has the answer to who stole the colour from games:
