Bungie Chill-Out Map Remake Debuts at MLG San Diego
Posted by Owen Good at 6:00 AM on June 16, 2008

Chill Out, an all-time greatest hit for Halo gamers from the Combat Evolved days, is getting a makeover and will be coming to Halo 3 soon. Bungie debuted "Cold Storage" at Major League Gaming San Diego over the weekend, to wild applause from the gallery, which watched the first match on the new map.
Bungie offered no word on when specifically it will drop. MLG's site has some low-res shots of the event (camera shots of the monitor). You can at least make out the chilly, blue-hued, nitrogen-spewing environment familiar to the original Chill Out. Three more pics after the jump, and more in MLG's gallery.

@okenny :): It's just really hard to find a job now, even in the summer for a 15 year old. If I was 16 it wouldn't be a problem but that comes in November :/
Doing anything for my parents or asking them is useless, my dad is over 30 thousand dollars in debt because of fraud, and I really don't want them to have to worry about getting me anything or something, so alas I will probably not playing much new games till next year, due to financial problems (even more then that debt.)
It makes me mad to because I was about to start a job then I moved, now everywhere around me wants older people, and I have no form of transportation to get anywhere else :(
Poor and gamer don't mix...

@mahi: I just didn't think it felt right at all. But you're right that it has a lot to do with Halo 3's scale and weapon balance. It's just not right. I've completely given up on Halo 3. Halo 1 and 2 are easily in my top 10 favorite games. Halo 3 doesn't even crack the top 50. It just isn't Halo anymore. It feels more like a Halo themed Tribes mod. The only thing I really like is the sniper rifle and that's not enough to keep me coming back.

Avalanche>Sidewinder
I'd like to see a number of Halo2 maps quick-ported to Halo3 with new textures. We don't need brand new Tomstones, Coagulation, Midship, Ivory Tower, Terminal, etc when the old ones will do fine.

@D Mitsuki: I'm sure you have some "legal" marketable skills that you can put to good use and get some cash. $50 bucks will buy you a 20 GB hard drive on Ebay and $10 bucks will get you a map pack. I think Kaz said it best: We want you to work hard to afford a PS3 (or something like that). Just think of it as working not-so-hard to afford a Halo 3 maps :)
I don't mean to make light of your situation either. I was heavily into RC Airplanes and Cars (none of that Flyboy and Tyco crap) back when I was 15 (exactly 15 years ago today) and making the money to feed my habits were hard. Luckily, I was armed with a work permit and art skills learned from my dad. I parlayed that into a meager but usable revenue stream. No tax shelters required ;)

Evidence #2 why Garnnet of 1Up Yours stuck his foot up his own ass to get it into his mouth. *Sigh* Don't mind me folks; I'm just a little ticked off.
I can't wait to see the new map :) I honestly thought they were done making maps for Halo 3. It's cool to see that they haven't stopped.

@Fermbiz: The idiot... urrm, I mean Garnnet made a statement to the effect that he doesn't think the 360 community has the ability to foster clan-level gameplay like the PC and PS3 communities do. It was such a foolish statement that it had me face-palming in the middle of the podcast. It was on the latest episode of 1Up Yours.
@D Mitsuki: Yeah. I heard a simillar report on the news and it put the blame squarely on old people. Yes, little billy, grampa stole your part-time job. Regardless of that, it's is tougher for a 15 year old even.
I had a 386 sx (no math co-processor), a copy of Corel Draw 1.0 on 3 floppies (hand me downs) and a Panasonic 300dpi b/w laser printer that could only print a full page without running out of memory (512 KB) at 150dpi. It was meager but it allowed me to design some good flyers for businesses where the printer would charge them design fees higher then mine which was $25 a flyer.

@Psychophan7:
How exactly does it play like Unreal Tournament? The player speed is way slower and the weapons more powerful.
All this bitching about Halo 3's mp. It's a cross between Halo 1 and 2 multiplayer, and in my opinion, eliminates the annoying dual-wield-athon that was Halo 2 while given you substantially more options than Halo 1.

Bungie can make all the remakes they want, but it won't make Halo 3 any better of a game. Instead of putting work into remaking maps (I have no problems with new map designs), they should work on making Halo 3 play more like a Halo game and less like Unreal Tournament.

@Llost: There are no plans to ever make the current map pack (legendary) free. Ever. Stop waiting and suck it up. They are great maps.
And whoever said Halo is like Unreal Tournament is crazy. I love both of them and they are nothing alike other than being FPS.

Posted 9:15 AM 16/6/08
It's just a waste that they charge for the maps from the start. I get bored of waiting as I bought the first map pack and was a little dissapointed (I loved messing with foundry in Forge and made my own destroyed and abandoned factory but overall not worth 800 points for 2 maps) so I thought I'd wait and it's been a long wait. I feel like they should just give the maps for free after like 4 months not 8 or whatever. And they should be cheaper too since 400 points per map is a ripoff. They'll see more profit from these maps than from Halo 3 itself.

@Captain Impulse:
Didn't stop developers from making tons of free downloads for the first xbox. It sure as hell doesn't cost the millions they make off them. Not even a tenth of the amount they make. Free content also sells more copies.

Posted 11:28 AM 16/6/08
@mugido: #1) Bungie doesn't want to charge for the maps, but Microsoft enforces a cost on them.
2) Wait a few months for them to become free. Putting the man hours it takes into making these maps costs money, and it's ludicrous to expect them to be free anyway.

@mugido: Doesn't mean Microsoft hasn't changed their policies, or holds Bungie to a different standard because they know they're a cash cow.
And can you blame them for NOT turning their back on the "millions they make off them"? They're a business.
Again, if you don't want to pay, wait. Otherwise the point is moot.

@ Likwit
With you on the inferiority of Halo 3 Lockout vs Halo 2...
Disagree why.
Its nothing to do with the engine, which is as someone else pointed out, the best bits of H1 and H2 stuck together, its everything to do with:
1. Removing interesting angles of fire ala the library window.
2. Removing interesting jumps that, with skill, enabled you to Manoeuvre around the map in much more dynamic way than the remake allows
3. Removing the "danger" from collecting power weapons. Previously it was a lot easier to kill some one going for sword or shotgun due to the exposed nature of these spawns. Removing angles of fire and providing shottie corridor with "camping wings" mean there is no risk/reward in colecting these items anymore.

@aeonpulse & TheOtherBarber: Chill Out wasn't only PC only. It was one of the original maps from the Xbox version of Halo: CE.
@Llost: The games barely been out for 8 months. How can you say they've waited that long to make DLC free? It has been about 4 months from paid release to becoming free, as you think it should be.
@mike566: You're the only other person I've ever heard say that. It's my favorite CE map as well. (I like a number of H2 maps better, such as Gemini, Terminal and Relic.)
