Crytek Moving Toward PSP Development?
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 12:00 PM on June 19, 2008
PSP programmers take note—Crytek is hiring. The developer of Crysis and Far Cry is looking to bring its wares to the PlayStation Portable in some form, looking for experienced PSP developers to relocate to its Budapest studio to work on an unspecified project. Odd choice for a platform, considering Crytek president Cervat Yali said the company was "suffering currently from the huge piracy that is encompassing Crysis" earlier this year, as piracy on the PSP platform isn't exactly rare.
Crytek is currently working on something for the PlayStation 3, which has been rumoured to be an "enhanced" version of Crysis, that may also be multi-platform. Whether that's a PSP spin-off or something totally new altogether, we'll have to wait to find out.

Wonder if it will be another game that draws the line between PSP and DS, like MGS:PO and GoW:CoO.

@jParadox: @TOCATL: lol, I don't know if you read all the threads about Crytec developping for PS3, but "enhanced" version may means adapted for the PS3. Everyone knows thats the PS3 is not as powerfull as a big PC (far from that), and cannot run it as beautifull as DX 10 (or even 9) at full (or half full) of course!
I think "enhanced" means as nice as they can on PS3 plus maybe some new feature.

Let's hope that while making this game, they don't develop for a hypothetical future console that hasn't even been released yet; like the PS5.

I have the nagging feeling that the announcement for why Crytek stopped working on the Crysis PC patch is...
"Crytek bought by Sony!"

Don't the people at Crytek know that piracy isn't just limited to just PC games?
ANYWAYS. An "enhanced" version of Crysis? How?! Sounds more like a "dumbed down" version for the consoles! Snort. I've seen the PS3 in action. I've seen the 360 in action. Crysis, at max settings, would make those consoles shit themselves, if they could. And NO, the PS3 *won't* handle it.
My NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GX2 graphic card can handle Crysis on max settings though. (Go me.) Can the PS3 outrun my video card? DOUBT IT! And I KNOW the 360 is in tears next to my video card!
Yeah. Crytek: Game piracy isn't just limited to PC games. Just wanted to pass along that memo, since you lost it after all. Enjoy.

@TOCATL: a lot of time reading and putting together parts that could be spent gaming. Na. Really tho not trying to start a ps3 vs pc "war." I play pc games sometimes, ie when my computer can run them. Its just much easier to buy a console and not worry about upgrades. Plus I prefer controllers over kb/mouse. I know I know kb/mouse = accuracy but I grew up playing games on controllers.

@SofaKingHI: Well, affordable pc gaming does require some skills to put togheter a lot of pc parts, and do a good amount of reading and research to choose the best parts (no always the most expensive hardware is always the best), also the reccomended upgrade time for pc hardware is like 2-3 years...

Crysis on Wii and Xbox 360 is a dumb idea. The processing power needed to run it on PC is barely good enough, unless you have a disposable income and bought yourself a GTX 280. The PS3 might have the power to run it, as we have seen proof you can actually make good games that look good that people want to buy with Metal Gear Solid 4. A PSP spin-off of Crysis is stupid, since it must be a free-roam game, and the island is too big for the UMD on the PSP. A new PSP game from Crytek would be nice, possibly a shooter or something. I am looking forward to a new Crytek game on the PSP, since I've beaten Crysis and I'm looking for something new from these guys.

wtf... the PSP doesn't even have shaders! Without shaders, it's downright boring do develop graphics for games (something Crytek have always been experts in, while being noobs in other departments).

The piracy argument is the same "the sky" is falling argument they use all the time. Its not made to make sense.
Great that they are coming to PSP. My PSP could need some new games. I dont pirate PSP games, but I dont buy games at full prices ether. I will rather wait than get the games at full price on something I consider a secondary gaming device I use more for movies, podcasts and mobil web/wap surfing than actual gaming.
Portable games are just not worth a full retail price, I think.

@TOCATL:
So what can you say about MGS4 ?
If that game is ported to the PC, what would be it's recommended PC specs?
The graphics of MGS4 or Uncharted is almost on par with a max-setting Crysis on a powerhouse rig. Difference is that the framerate is limited on the PS3, but 30fps is good enough on a gamer's eye anyway.
Just wait and see if on what they can do on that PS3 version of Crysis. You might shit bricks if it ends up to be on par with the max settings of the PC version.
As for the PSP, meh, it might end up something like the Tekken DR graphics.

@jParadox: your videocard is just 2 times faster in some tasks than the RSX, and 1.5 times faster than the Xenos in other tasks.
Take-out DX9's flawed driver-design that wastes over 3 million cpu cycles per frame when stalls are not accounted for, use the consoles' down-to-the-metal gpu control, and redesign to use these features:
- PS3: add a secondary FlexIO bus to RSX, a SPE to generate all vertices (up to 1 billion/s), and a large internal texture-cache, enough cores to do a lot, extended shader-instructions that can speed-up postprocessing effects several times.
- x360: eDRAM cache, the fact that SysRAM=VRAM, 3 cores to do a lot.

There are probably 100,000 custom firmware enabled PSPs out there and 20 million PSPs out there... PSP software does badly because people buy it for multimedia, not because of piracy. And Crisis Core was the second best selling Final Fantasy game ever...
When there are games people really want on the PSP, they get them... It just happens the Final Fantasy fans are more tolerable of portables than Metal Gear fans...

@xCruciaLx:
The graphics on Uncharted are good nothing special. MGS looks amazing I'll give you that but you're not looking at the big picture. Crysis isn't just about how it looks in a screen shot its about the physics the lighting and the million other effects in it while in huge environments with incredible view distances.
It would be sweet if somehow they could get Crysis running on a PS3 at max settings but I just don't see it especially with how little ram the PS3 has.

I love how people forget about dedicated system specs. Either way I don't see what the big deal about how pretty a game is. If its a good game its a good game. I don't care if it looks like Crysis on max settings or Limbo of the Lost LOL! (Pun intended). Fun factory, and what makes a great game truly great isn't the graphics its what the developer does with its given to work with.

@michaelleung:
Probably because it gives you a fun, free-roaming environment in which you can approach situations tactically and basically gives you a good time.
Then, a couple hours in, it yanks everything out and sticks you in a thinly veiled corridor shooter til the end.

I imagine if they could do something kind of like Killzone on the PSP they might be onto something. That game was so much better than the original, and one of the few examples of a game maker adapting rather than shoehorning an existing franchise onto the PSP.
