Zero Punctuation Does Not Enjoy Haze, Either
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 7:00 PM on June 19, 2008
Why didn't you enjoy Haze? If you've actually played it, and aren't just accepting that the game's a load of crap because the internet told you so, feel free to watch this week's episode of Zero Punctuation and choose from one of dozens of reasons Yahtzee catalogues to agree with. Oh, and if you're wondering why the video progress bar is only 2/3 of the way through when ZP finishes, don't. Just...press stop right away.

@genbeef: Ok, while those games are good to me they are most certainly not only good to me, but rather most people based on very good reception and the 8/10+ review scores every single one of those games had from pretty much anyone that played them.
@King of Fun UK: All I have say to you is SO WHAT IF THEY ARE MULTI-PLATFORM, does this make them any less good? You know why you don't like multi-platform games? Because they are not flame bait for your fanboyism. The PS3 is a great console, so is the 360, and even the Wii has a few gem's buried in the shovel ware, so stop being such fanboy's and grow up.

Yahtzee does like some mainstream games. He said good things about lots of games (GTAIV, Mario Galaxy, even Assassin's Creed). The whole point of ZP is to create humour by picking at the flaws of games.
Game developers seem to go out of their way to give him material to work with, too.

My brother and I both felt the game has been rushed out, despite the fact it was given an extra few months for 'polish'. Starting on the troop carrier rumbling through the forest the scenery/graphics are every bit as bad as claimed. We both commented that this didn't bode well for the rest of the game.
Aside from the clear lack of play-testing (playing on HARD makes the first vehicle mission almost impossible to do AT SPEED because each destructive mine has had their damage radius/% level increased automatically, to the point whereby you can't actually 'race' through the canyons without being destroyed) the game suffers from bizarre jumps in both quality and design.
From bizarre swamp levels full of pointless art assests you don't actually encounter unless you wander off the beaten path (giving the striking impression that the level is from some other game) to shareware/budget game textures for later levels, along with retarded bugs such as the ability to fall through solid surfaces and plummet to your death... it's just all so poorly put together as a game.
I think they spent their few months delay just reworking the forest (demo) level so they could have something to put out and impress with...

Painkiller was a mind-less shooting game with a try at story and that was it was without being something it's not, but Haze was pretentious in what it was doing than what painkiller was marketing.

But does he enjoy anything though, other than obscure games that the 'gaming-elite' enjoy? Haven't watched the video, he's a bit late on jumping on the Haze-hate band wagon though, if not even a bit off after claiming he enjoyed Painkiller. I still maintain it was a mediocre shooter, nothing was overly offensive about it and I don't need Yahtzee telling me that there was.

My friend had this pre-ordered as a Christmas present. I begged that it be cancelled for a more favourable GTAIV. But alas I have Haze. I've done the first level and never played it again. The characters pissed me off within the first 5 minutes and in the one level I played was pretty unbearable. Jungle ftl...

Well the Escapist Magazine people have realized that the only thing anyone ever visits their site for is Yahtzee and have decided to try and plug their other content by piggybacking it onto Zero Punctuation.
It is annoying but I can see their logic given that most people probably direct link to the videos and dont even so much as look at the Escapist homepage

Having not played Haze I can't tell if Yahtzee is right, but just about every other one of his "reviews" has been spot on with my opinion so I think it's pretty likely I'd agree with him on Haze too. I'll be interested to hear his thoughts on MGS4. So far I've not seen a review from anyone I would trust not to just give it a high score because it's an MGS game and they don't want lots of hatemail from rabid Kojima fans.

Mentioning of cornettos reminds me of watching Shaun of the Dead with the wife. Shaun asked Ed if he wanted anything from the "shops." He replied, "Cornetto." My wife and I had no idea wth a cornetto was. However, when Shaun was returning from the store, he was carrying what we call a Nutty Buddy--at least when I was growing up that's what they were called. Mystery solved.
As for Haze, played the demo, didn't care for it much. However, I didn't care for Burnout Paradise's demo either, but bought the game recently and loving it! I will stick with my better judgment on Haze, however, and give it a pass. The dev team seemed to be so passionate about this game in their interviews. Hard to believe it came out like this. Oh well...it's a cluttered genre anyhow.
One more thing before I step off the soapbox. Please stop the damn ridiculous "PS3 HAZ LIIK NO GAMEZ!11" I own a PS3 and have quite a sizable inventory of games. You know what problem I have at night when my boys lay down to bed and it is game time on the PS3? Which damn one I want to play! And that is a good problem to have.

It's too bad that all that was great about Haze was the teaser. Never mind that it didn't have any gameplay footage (typical of teasers), but the PR exec guy had that smug look on his face that said "DAMN! I LOVE THIS COMPANY!@

He may have criticised them sure, but the general consensus was positive. This 'hating' games thing isn't what he does, he just exposes flaws for comic effect, and a fine job he does as well. Off the top of my head, CoD4, Assassin's Creed, Crysis, Portal + Orange Box, Paper Mario, GTA 4 are all games he gave positive reviews to. He's praised others such as Bioshock, even though the praise sometimes gets buried under the criticisms. He's always critical, but that's a good thing in my opinion. Even good games deserve their criticism, especially ones where their potential somewhat outstripped their execution, like Assassin's Creed and Bioshock.

@hotdamn: But every game publication lives or dies by the advertising money they get from the major publishers, ergo I trust none of them to be honest about the game. Especially when Konami deliberately prevented them from revealing how long the cut scenes are and how many mandatory installs you have to sit through and they all rolled over and did as they were told.
Fahey's review was alright, but all the negative points he raised about the game are the exact same reasons why I thought MGS2 and MGS3 weren't very good. I still love MGS1 on the PS1, but it just seems like the rest of the series cannot match its greatness.

@JustThisGuy:
Hm, I do better the opposite way around. In SOF2 I was having fun even though the scripted events were very obvious and I was constantly tripping them from the wrong places. When it went to the stealth mission on the train, I just stopped. (Easter egg glitch - walk into the train station bathroom and shoot the urinal! You won't fail, but you will go blind...)
Fear... I expected sort of a first person survival horror game with some shooting. A minute in I'm shooting mysteriously agressive marines in a warehouse full of crates. 'nuff said.
I had a lot of fun with Prey because it was less about picking off bad guys and more coming to terms with all the spatial rifts they'd leave open when they appeared.
If I was the badass space marine off the bat, I'd probably never find out about the second half...
There are games with one shot kills like Operation Flashpoint, but I can't get into those because I prefer games with clear obvious rules. Realistic shooters tend to end up as me dropping dead spontaneously with no visible cause, and never knowing where it came from. :/

@fuchikoma: Well, you never know. I personally didn't expect the man to like AC, but whaddaya know? He dug it.
He might have seemed easier on this title than others because there was potential. Seriously: I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to play an FPS where I spent the first half as your typical bad-ass space marine with regenerating health and enough firepower to level a small Eastern European country, only to have the game completely make me question normal FPS design decisions by having me play as a weakling who relied on strategy and stealth, Rainbox 6-style (old Rainbow 6, not the new titles)--that is, one hit=death, and I'd have to come up with interesting new ways to take out my former near-invincible space marine peers.

I'm gonna get destroyed for this if anyone is still reading, but...
Haze is my favorite game for PS3 and one of my favorite FPS games of this generation... and to be clear, I would place the PS3 at the bottom of my top 3 current-gen console list.
Many complaints I've heard center around what, if you've completed the game, are obvious design choices that compliment the story. Voice acting is only "bad" when the characters in question are high on Nectar and the game's story is actually very well told. It's a shame more people didn't play it fully.
