Interview: Pachter Says Console Sales Still OK, But Expect Holiday Price Drops
Posted by Leigh Alexander at 9:20 AM on June 14, 2008
Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter said that Nintendo's lead over its competitors in hardware sales is no cause for alarm for Sony and Microsoft, even though console sales in the recent month saw declines Xbox 360 and the Wii declining over the month prior. Even though console sales are still within expectations, the analyst said the Xbox 360 and PS3 will see at least a $AU 53.22 price reduction by the Holiday.
"I don't really think that Microsoft and Sony are doing badly - just doing badly in comparison to Nintendo", Pachter said. "It makes sense that PS3 and 360 are doing about the same... instead of saying 'what's wrong with Sony and Microsoft,' we should be looking at Nintendo and saying, 'how the hell do they keep doing this?'"
It's easy to peg the answers on the price discrepancies, but Pachter said that's not all there is to it, pointing to Nintendo's success in a mainstream market most gamers are less aware of. "There really are people who play games that don't read Kotaku - I know it's hard to believe", he said. "There are people out there who don't even know how to spell Kotaku, and don't even know that there are websites dedicated to games".
Calling the typical console-fanboy attitude "extremely myopic", Pachter added, "There are actually people out there who have sex. The people on Kotaku, other than their parents, they've never met anyone who's had sex".
Mainstream gamers are mad about Wii Fit, Pachter said, agreeing with fellow analyst Billy Pidgeon who predicted that the Wii would not balance its supply with demand until 2009. So no price drop for Wii anytime soon - but what about the others?
"You'll get a price cut", said Pachter. "I think if I were Sony, I would wait for the Fall, or for the Christmas lineup. There's no reason for them to cut it today [with MGS 4 out]".
Pachter thinks it's likely to see a $AU 53.22 reduction in the PS3's price. "They'll go $AU 106.43 if they can afford to", he said, possibly close to the release of LittleBigPlanet, taking a "family bundle" angle.
As for Microsoft, Pachter said they won't stand for having the 360 and PS3 on level pricing ground, and will probably implement their own price drop commensurately. "Madden was an event for Microsoft last year, so perhaps you'll get a 360 cut with Madden. But I think if I were Microsoft, I'd maybe cut it in front of Gears 2".
Pachter also anticipates possible future supply constraints for Wii, based on Nintendo's history of consistently underestimating demand - he also thinks their attach rate estimates for Wii Fit are a bit lower than they'll turn out to be.

@BoringJob:
Game sales on the Wii are phenomenal, it moves quite a bit of software every month. Third party sales are abysmal? Serves those asshats right; lets look at the data:
Okami: great game, NO ADS, despite having failed the first time on a console w/10x the userbase because of it.
Zack and Wiki: Great game, NO ADS
No More Heroes: Great game, no ADS
I can keep going with this for quite some time.
I'm sick of all this slanted software "data" comparing the Wii with the other two consoles. A million dollars says that if any of the above games would have launched on either, or even both of the other consoles with the exact same level of advertising they had on the Wii, they would have failed just as miserably. Original IPs sell terribly, unadvertised games sell AWFULLY. Why is it that even terrible games like Haze get TV commercials and the whole nine yards so long as they launch on the xbox/PS3 but any third party game on the Wii gets nothing no matter how amazing it is?
When you cite me a new IP third party game that comes out on the Wii that goes so far as to BUY AN ENTIRE CHANNEL for a week just to promote it *cough* Assassin's Creed *cough* then you can blame the Wii and its fanbase for poor third party sales. Till then, it's the result of generally awful games couple with the most abysmal attempts of advertising for any games ever.
Nintendo is not "fucking" anyone. They are putting out just as many hardcore games as they ever have, definitely more than any other single publisher this generation, and in record time. Third parties might be screwing the pooch on this one, but Nintendo itself (aside from the lack of hard drive thing) is doing a great job of catering to the core.

I've started posting this around, and this seems like a good place too:
Around Madden makes sense to me because of Too Human's release date. Dyack has gone on record that the game is about to go gold some 2 months before release. It will also be available to reviewers much earlier than your average game. Why such a long period of time between going gold and release?
Because its release is being timed with a price cut. Booya! My pseudonym is Darth Tigris and you will remember me.

Maybe I can use that $50 I save on buying a PS3 this holiday season towards a lady of the night if you get my drift? You know, those girls are often referred to as "working girl". What some might call a lady of easy virtue. The type of girl who might join you in a trollop for some sort of exchange. A female who engages in sexual intercourse for payment. A hooker.
Because kids, we all know you're not cool until you have SEX!

I don't think he needed to take a pot shot at the Kotaku readers with the whole "we've never met anyone who's had sex" bit, but he is right that "there is more to it then we see here at Kotaku". Obviously the 360 and PS3 will price cut, but I think you'll see the price cut with something different, theres not point to bundle a 360 with Gears 2, anyone who wants Gears 2 played Gears 1 and owns a 360. My guess is in Japan you'll see the ToV bundle 360 at a 50$ off price, dunno if we'll see anything like it in NA (360 does well enough here). I can see PS3+LBP bundle at a cheap price this holiday season.

He couldn't have said that. Seriously? He must be operated on the "any publicity is good publicity" system.
If there is this huge untapped market, why is it that software sales for the Wii blow? There's a reason 3rd parties aren't taking the time for quality games.
I don't care how much Nintendo makes by selling the Wii at a profit. The real money is software. And these "casuals" aren't downloading all the VC titles and rushing out for the new Mario Kart.
It almost seems as if Nintendo, after rescuing itself from dire straights with the Wii's success seems committed to fucking it all up.
I really would like a reason to turn on my Wii. Unfortunately (for my Wii) COD4, Bioshock and Metal Gear provide me with much more fun, compelling experiences.
My girlfriend and 6 year old daughter don't even care about the Wii any more. For them, it's Carcassone, Puzzle Quest, PixelJunk Monsters and Super Puzzle Fighter HD.

What's the point of dropping the price $50 at christmas? If anyone's waiting for a price drop, right now Wal*Mart is offering $100 gift cards with the purchase of the PS3. I don't know how much longer the sale's on for, but it's been running a couple weeks now I think. Anyone who was gonna buy it cause it's a bit cheaper would have taken advantage of that great deal like I did.

Yeah, um, patcher... You're an effing asshole. Like, you just sealed your asshole status for all eternity to make your life's work predicting game business and then insulting all of us in one fell swoop...
I actually don't know many people my age, or even younger who HAVEN'T had sex... It's not like you're suddenly an adult once you have teh sex... That asshole comment just opens so many cans... There is more to life than money and even more than sex, and maybe the, ehem, virgins on kotaku know that... You know, the college students and parents and teens, men, women, boys, girls... The incredibly wide variety of people who come on here and who game, and hell... Who gamed long before the Wii came around... People who enjoy it as another legitimate form of entertainment that need not be waving arms around or balancing on a board while cartoony avatars imitate you.
Oh, and need I remind him that, ya know, insulting people for being virgins is more junior high and high school than enjoying a game that challenges people to think about social issues. So, yeah, pure asshole status... For the rest of eternity.

@BoringJob:
Like I said, each and every one of those games (minus Motorstorm, which only sold slightly above meh, mostly because there was nothing else to play at the time) practically bought entire channels for the sakes of advertising them. I saw Bioshock commercials CONSTANTLY, Resistance was the only even remotely decent launch game for the PS3, Gears of War was only beat by Halo 3 this gen for most ridiculous advertising ploys. Nintendo doesn't have said "iron grips" on third parties anymore, the only exception that is even speculated anymore is restricted use of Miis, which I know isn't hindering any projects for the core audience.
As to your rehash comment: Halo 2+3, GTA 2,3, Vice City, San Andreas, LCS, VCS, 4, MGS2,3,4, FFI-XIII, COD2-4, Guitar Hero 2, 80's, 3, Aerosmith, ETC...
The entire industry is doing the exact same thing. Each franchise having many games that play almost exactly the same but with a fresh coat of paint, a new story, or just some new levels. There is no problem with "rehashing" something people love and making more things that people love with the same formula. If rehashing was bad there would have been no further exploration of the FPS genre after Wolfenstein.

@usfslacker: You mean a third party get access to features Nintendo reserves for itself? Let's not forget that Nintendo's infamous iron grip on what 3rd parties are allowed to do.
Nintendo isn't putting out "hardcore titles". They put out rehash after rehash after rehash of the same several franchises with minor or no updating.
Basically, Nintendo is becoming EA.
Original IPs sell terrible? That must be why Bioshock, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Resistance, Motorstorm, etc all failed miserably, yes?
Hell, Nintendo isn't even pushing the Wii. You know originally the Wiimote/chuk was just a new accessory for the GCN, right? That's why a lot of the games, including ones from Nintendo, were ported over with minimal change from their GCN roots.

@Michael Pachter: I think you need to do a little more statistical research there sir (ironic being that you are a professional analyst):
According to the ESA, the average age of a gamer in the US is 29. Probably a safe bet many Kotakuites aren't virgins, seeing as everyone I personally know who comments here is around my age or older (read: 29).
Outside of that? Teenagers and twentysomethings are usually pretty darn myopic, as they've lived pretty insular lives up until about the age of 25, seeing as most people rely on their families for financial security up until that point. So I'd say your critical analysis of the Kotaku community knocked that one out of the park. That puts you at about 50/50, which is better than your professional track record.
I am a little curious as to how you presume that all child gamers' sphere of contact with sexually active people in their lives would be limited to those who spawned them. I know I'm not the only former child-gamer-virgin to have older siblings and relatives. Not to mention friends who themselves weren't likely the result of immaculate conception. I'm also pretty sure that those in the field of education aren't all virgins, though times may have changed. Do parents usually keep their children locked in a box until their deflowering these days?
God knows I could have avoided a lot of awkward years had I been locked in my room with only my Sega Genesis until the age of 16. Though who among us, gamer or not, isn't that true of?
Savvy call on the predicted console price drop this fall, though. You might want to flash this little bit of data past your Wedbush Morgan cronies while you're at it:
Tomorrow, very early in the morning, the sun is probably going to rise, thus illuminating our corner of the Earth for about 15 hours, give or take. Most analysts will refer to this phenomenon as sunrise but if you hurry, you might be able to coin a different name for it...
Finally, how do you go about getting paid such a ridiculous sum of money to state the obvious, infer the ludicrous, and be wrong more than half of the time?
I think I might be overqualified.

The real world is a lot different then online. When I tell real people I have a Wii,they say,"You do? Awesome! Do you have Mario Kart?" Even actual women (people sort of like us,but without a weiner)say that. When I tell online people I have a Wii,they say,"Lulz kiddie noob headshot !!!!11"

@SmilingPolitely: I actually think he what? Made a low brow joke at the expense of the people he's supposed to be interacting with? Engaged in a bit of fanboy tactics himself and thereby lowered his viability? Said something really stupid that was sure to piss a lot of people off for no good reason? Yes. Yes, I think he.

You guys obviously never even bothered watching Pachter on GameTrailers. The guy is light hearted most of the time and says stuff like this with a tongue in cheek. Stop being so full of yourselves. It's just a guy teasing you. He's probably laughing his ass off. I know I am.

"Calling the typical console-fanboy attitude 'extremely myopic,' Pachter added, 'There are actually people out there who have sex. The people on Kotaku, other than their parents, they've never met anyone who's had sex.'"
By that, is he talking about the Kotaku staff or the readers or both? Anyway, it's pretty apparent that Pachter reads Kotaku and wears glasses, so maybe his conclusion is also a self-reference.

Since when don't I have sex?
Since when don't the people I know have sex?
Is he saying that if you have a Wii and don't read Kotaku, you're more prone to sex? Man, there's going to be a lot of upset parents out there.

Someone call Uwe Boll. I think we found him a meat bag to light up. Why would someone make those comments in the first place unless there's some insecurity there? Does he believe that we might threaten his job because we're able to see the obvious as well?
I was telling my fiance that I bet he has a bunch of video game word magnets on his fridge, gets shitfaced, jumbles them around, passes out, wakes up the next morning, and begs someone to listen to the genius observations he came up with.
I've given you enough cheap shots Pachter. Have fun with your, as someone stated earlier, Captain Obvious job. You're so damn intelligent.

@bobtheduck: "Said something really stupid that was sure to piss a lot of people off for no good reason?"
It shouldn't piss you off...unless you're over 30 and it's true. Then I could see it pushing your buttons.
Anyone secure with themselves would just laugh it off...like everyone else is. We don't have to "prove" anything to anyone.
And I like Patcher. The game industry needs people like him; a professional who actually pays attention to the industry and cares.

@cringer8: "The game industry needs people like him; a professional who actually pays attention to the industry and cares."
The game industry needs people that get paid to tell us things we already know, or could have easily gleaned ourselves from decades of repeated history? One would hope that any industry would have the sense to shy away from such frivolous spending as giving these postdiction makers employment.

Is pachter pulling a nintendo...calling kotaku readers dorks that don't know what sex is. Well we are just regular people with a job who enjoys gaming. And a lot of us have girlfriends, wife, and kids. Just when he's beginning to get some credibility he went and said a stupid thing.

Like others I have to say did he just say that? I don't think Leigh would slip it in in his name... He could be joking but that's pretty bare fisted.
Nice junior high rip. Now he's gone from Ms. Cleo to Laurent Fischer, carelessly slamming his audience. He's a good analyst, but remember, he's guessing too. His difference is he gets paid for it, and has a bunch of data at his fingertips. What regular reader here doesn't keep their fingers on the pulse of gaming too? We're the kind of geeks to eagerly await NPD data and then review the press releases from each respective company! So why is he special anyway?
Even before that little "die in a fire" from him, I don't see why his every move is noteworthy. Is it because he won an analyst-off once? I mean he's not some revered shaman who sees the future or anything.
