Kratos Was Originally Dominus, Twisted Metal Originally More Awesome

Nestled gently at the bottom of one of his most recent blog posts, David Jaffe has spoken a little on a topic that I've always found interesting as hell: the previous/working titles of some of his games. Something about how a different name can alter your entire perception of a title...anyways. Some of them are really interesting! Like the fact one of God of War's possible names was Ω. Just the symbol. And the fact Kratos was for a long time going to be called the much-cheesier (especially with ham and pineapple) Dominus. And that one of Twisted Metal's original names was the brilliantly evocative Cars and Rockets, which Jaffe said "nobody else" liked. Nobody? Oh Sony.
Why the do we even try? [Jaffe's Blog]

And Twisted Metal 2 should've been Cars and Rockets 2: Snakes on a Plane.

Omega's kinda cool, but that has a more Christian implication.
Cars and Rockets? I might have enjoyed that. Twisted Metal? Never been a fan.

Cars and Rockets, I would have bought.
When I was younger, I avoided the series, worried that it was some kind of dirty car porn.

LMAO...I still think that the character design for Kratos is not in sync with the rest of the artwork and that he doesn't look Spartan/Greek, bald and goatee?

Someone says something wrong and people make a big deal about it just because their mistake is a religous implication.

@Luke Plunkett: But there were already Rockets on a Car in the first. To differentiate, it would either have to be Cars and Rockets 2: More Rockets on More Cars, or go a different direction and convey destructive imagery with the title Cars and Rockets 2: Rockets Through a Car.

@develin: "Not to mention the general usage in science for last or end or just the opposite of alpha (as in alpha male)."
In physics, at least, the omega is used to represent the ohm which is a measurment of electrical independence. In fact, it is sometimes seen upside down. Nikolia Telsa, to my knowledge, was one of the first to use the symbol in science. Speaking of which, Telsa was a complete and total badass.

Omega is far better... and It's the last Greek letter, the word literally translates into "Great". It has taken on a personafication of "the end" in our society due to its placement in the alphabet. The only Christian reference to omega is (I believe, I could be wrong) in the book of Revelations, which, if not taken in a religious sense, is an incredible acid trip like depiction of the end of the world. (Im not bashing christianity or the bible at all, I find history, and as a result the bible, fascinating and the book of Revelations is far and away a more imaginative and creative depiction than anything Hunter S Thompson could come up with!)

I love the name Dominus, it's one of my online id's sometimes. I learned it from the series Big O, it's Latin for "lord".

@dunetiger
Omega has a Christian implication? A letter of the Greek alphabet, a language of people who weren't Chrstian in the first place. Not to mention the general usage in science for last or end or just the opposite of alpha (as in alpha male).
To my best knowledge there is no specific Christian usuage of that term (with the exception of the saying that "god is the alpha and the omega" which can be used for any monotheistic religion).
Why I complain? Because a combination of PC forbids everything (freedom of what?)

@dunetiger reads kotaku, seems pleased: Can you explain how Omega has a more christian implication? It's a letter of the greek alphabet...
Perhaps if Christians used it on par with the way the Nazis bastardized the swastika, I could see your point, but the only thing I ever see Omega being used as is in cheesy Sci-Fi films and as a Fraternity/Sorority symbol. (Omega Mu.. now there's a funny ass name).
Disclaimer: I apologize for almost invoking Godwin's Law, but it's accurate in this instance.

Well Kratos already participates in the orgies, all he needs is a keg (or Dionysis present) and it practically is a fraternity. Fraternity of gods that is.

Not sure I understand the reasoning behind naming him "omega." At best, its like a bad fraternity name. Overall though, its just a letter. It would be the same as naming him "E."
Although if he was named "Q" or "M" then Ian Fleming's ghost might sue.
Definately glad they went with Kratos.

@Cogito:
His name wouldn't be omega, that would be the name of the game. And although it's just a letter, it is from an ancient language that is not commonly used today outside of some sciences and language classes.
Thus to the common man who buys the game it would make for a better name than something so in-your-face as god of war.

@NeoAkira: True, but the whole point of the God of War franchise was to be as "in your face!" as possible. Having a subtle title probably wasn't what Jaffe was aiming for.
Besides, if it was really called Omega, then I would refer to it as Resistance all the time.
(Not the PS3 game, the measurement for Ohms of resistance in an electrical system)...kinda like xkcd's tin + apple joke. :)

I've known that Kratos was originally named Dominus since... the behind-the-scenes DVD included with the strategy guide. Which came out at the same time as the game. Which was years ago.
