More Screenshots, Gameplay Info for The Conduit
Posted by Owen Good at 9:00 AM on June 16, 2008
The fact developer High Voltage Software has yet to find a publisher for The Conduit, which is the FPS Wii-exclusive title, hasn't stopped it from announcing a first-quarter 2009 release. The Conduit Information Centre site also has a nice little cache of screenshots, one is above, some are after the jump. IGN put up four new ones on Friday.
Also, a Q&A with High Voltage's software development director gives a few more details on the game itself, including:
• Three modes for online play. Offline play is single-player. LAN multiplayer likely. They're trying to get voice chat online.
• Enemies use portals to bring in reinforcements; destroying them will be a key.
• Set in fictional Earth of the near future, the story takes on a dark conspiracy-theory tone that unravels pretty fast after you get sent to investigate an extra-terrestrial encounter. Think the X-Files with stranger weapons.
• Your adversaries are called The Drudge. I battle drudgery every day, lemme tell ya. ...
Hit the jump for the eye candy.

It's always amusing when you see titles on the Wii that claim great graphics. I'm glad they're trying to make it pretty, but make sure the rest of the game works... graphics will never be the selling point. Their efforts in multiplayer and desire for voice could ensure they're doing more than just graphics.

despite the good graphics, this has generic FPS fare written all over it
I'm hoping this will trigger other companies to develop some quality FPSs for Wii that are original, innovative and immersive, with at least the same quality graphics as this game, Free Radical Design comes to mind, although their latest effort is not a good example, Monolith Productions would be sweet too

How do you announce a release date when there's no publisher?
Isn't there any sort of quality control? Doesn't it have to go through the console manufacturer first? Can anyone release a title at any time without a publisher?
That it hasn't been picked up by a publisher makes me think there's something wrong behind the scenes.

"The Conduit is a first person adventure game that takes place on Earth in a fictional near future. The main character, "Mr. Ford", works for an undisclosed government agency that has assigned him to investigate a possible extra-terrestrial encounter. The whole situation ends up going terribly wrong when the player discovers that there's a lot more going on behind the scenes than anybody could have realized. Players are going to be very surprised when they discover the real truth that surrounds us all."

High Voltage Games has stated that they have many publisher offers and they do not want to select a publisher yet because they don't want the publisher to come in and "monkey" things up. The fact that they don't have a publisher yet isn't bad, but it is instead a good sign because they don't want restrictions on when they have to have it out by and what-not.

I've been aching for a good first person shooter on the wii, actually. However, this game isn't really doing it for me. The enemy design is laughable, the video they showed off last month was very underwhelming, and the plot is more than cliche. I admire the fact that they're pushing the hardware, but this concept has been done to death. I really don't understand why people aren't going for the stylized look, maybe cel-shading, or something along those lines. Remember XIII? Something new and original like that would be pretty awesome.

Looks good enough for me. Nintendo needs to push a firmware update that allows voice chat, especially for co-op. As far as generic shooters and stupid plots...just make it fast-paced action with some cool upgrades, decent enemy AI and a decent multiplayer option. Might have to do the warp pipe thing again to enable online multiplayer if this a LAN only option.
A good chunk of the graphics in Red Steel were good enough for me. If they are of decent quality consistently throughout the Conduit and are running at 60frames/sec, then what's there to complain about. Sure you can hate on the Wii for it's lack of decent shooters with the combination of fast action, good graphics, good controls and decent online, but this attempts to address all.
In fact, PLEASE DO NOT make too much of this game plot-heavy. Keep the story simple.

The Wii could definitely use some more FPS games... the controls are so much better (when done right) than a dual analog setup. But given that the genre is typically not as suited for the Wii demographic and that FPS games are often tied to having the best graphics, I don't see it happening.

Posted 4:06 PM 16/6/08
The game still has some time out in terms of graphics. We've seen one gameplay trailer which was well.. decent in terms of an Xbox game just because of the texture flickering between transitions. If they just took care of that by making it more seemless and add a filter of smoke or a convenient alien "gas" then this could actually be a good looking game by modern FPS standards... meaning compared to say Halo 3.. which isnt really good compared COD4 or even Halflife 2... but this seems to have good character design.
If I push my hopes we may get some of their basic concepts in terms of graphics worked on overload which mean we could see a very pretty game. Theyve shown you can do a very nice FPS game on the Wii. They just need to do it...
And I need to see a hands on

I think the best part of this game isn't going to be the game itself but the Quantum3 engine that it's built on. If they can get more developers using that and start at least pushing the Wii hardware I think we could be onto a good thing. It could work out better for the Wii that UE3.
Surely if enough developers get on board eventually ONE of the games will be half decent!

Graphics remind me of The World Is Not Enough on PSone (yes I will admit to playing it) but I remember the video looking a lot better. In any case it has no competition on the Wii apart from Metroid and Red Steel so it should do okay, not much of a market for this kind of game on the Wii.

I'm cautiously optimistic about this one. I don't quite buy the hype about the graphics -- but maybe that will change closer to release. What I'm more excited about is the fact that it will be a first-person shooter for Wii that *isn't* set in World War II, and doesn't attempt to romanticize one of the darkest chapters in recent history.
To that effect, the only FPS titles on Wii that aren't set in World War II are, to my knowledge, Red Steel (egh), Far Cry (ack!), and Metroid Prime 3 (which is more of an adventure title than an FPS... I actually *like* having to flick my nunchuck to reload, damnit!)

Effort and hard work always look good. I could compare 360 and PS3 to my Rig and say how shit both look in comparison for tech info, my rig is the following: Mobo: Asus P5N-D, Intel Core Duo E400 OC @ 3.15gh, 5GB of ram, 2X 8800GTS gfx card and 500GB HDD.
As you see, it's more powerfull than both consoles, but still doesn't take away the beauty of the less powered ones. I still play my N64, SNES, Sega Megadrive, GBA, Atari just for fun. Yes, i think many Forgot what that word means, since all that matters is power of the console... Jeez...

What a bunch of snake oil bs coming from this developer. They're the same people who put out a press release with quotes from an executive saying Wii games look like crap, and that they're aiming to put "next gen" graphics on the Wii, then they go and release more craptastic screenshots.
They obviously were trying to get publisher support by leaking out a bunch of information to IGN before, and now they want to go on record and say that they don't want a publisher coming along and monkeying things up. Look at their wiki page! Are you telling me that of all their crappy games and review scores that each and every time it was the publishers fault? What a joke!
[en.wikipedia.org]
I for one will not be buying this game. These developers are obviously crude, disrespectful, and just like to spin everything with a bunch of BS. Tons of developers have no problem working with publishers and making good games with them. High Voltage's last FPS was America's Army on the 360. How many of you enjoyed that one? Yeah, didn't think so. That became one of Red Storm's biggest embarassments ever.
