Spore's Fruit Fucker, Or Why I Love the Creature Creator
Posted by Brian Crecente at 7:00 AM on June 13, 2008
I know Spore's Creature Creator has been making the rounds for months now, but yesterday was my first chance to get my hands on the thing and go to town on some critters of my own creation.
The stand-alone creator is a pretty straight-forward game. Launching it up brings you to a screen that lets you either create or load your own critters.
Once you drop into the creation mode you're presented with a floating blob of flesh, elongated at either end with stumpy tail-like or neck-like appendages. When you hover your cursor over the blob it becomes slightly transparent, exposing the vertebrae buried inside. An arrow appears over either stump as well. To shape your creature's body you tug on the arrows to stretch out the skin along an ever-extending backbone. You can also tug at the vertebrae to try and curve the spine and shape of the body.
Once you've shaped your body you can drop on arms, legs, mouths, eyes, noses, ears, hands, feet and other little appendages, like wings. Each of these can be twisted, stretched and moved about on the fly.
Initially the need for a backbone and the pre-set selection of body parts feels very limiting, but over time I found that I can create lots of things with a little creativity including spiders, snakes, cats, I even tried to create a Fruit Fucker... and almost succeeded. The one thing I can't seem to create is a human, I think the biggest issue there is that you can't add a separate head and instead have to rely on planing mouth, eyes, ears and such on the top of a knobby outgrowth of the spinal column. That's not a deal break at all though for me.
As you create your creature different icons give you a break down of its special abilities, like attacks and speed. Another button shows how complicated your critter is. If it gets too complicated you can't add any more parts. So no 100 mouthed balls of flesh.
Once completed you can paint the creature by either selecting among three pages of pre-set paint jobs or by painting the creature in three phases, still using pre-set stencils. The fact that you can choose just about any colour and that you can control three different overlays of colour makes customisation pretty easy, though doing something really specific, like a black band over Fruit Fucker's eyes, is impossible.
Is it worth $AU 10.68? Maybe, it is tons of fun to play around with, but I'm not sure if I'd want to shell out cash to get early hands-on time with something that will come built-in to a game I'm planning on buying. Then again it's only $AU 10.68 and it's TONS of fun. Actually a little addictive.
Oh and the rough draft of that organic Fruit Fucker up there, I suspect that's what FF might look like in meat space. I also suspect this particular Fruit Fucker would be just as happy to have his way with human chest cavities as the odd orange.

I understood that the $10 bucks was to be applied to the full purchase of Spore later when it is released.

@Cosmitz: Hydralisks don't fly, nor do they have wings. You're thinking Mutalisk, or one of the other flying things that aren't Hydralisks.

And I'd also say it wouldn't surprise me, they'll throw people a bone if they pay the $10 for this. I have no doubts.

@Omnimon:
But it's not a pre-order, you're paying $10 and then paying full price when the game comes out, not the full price minus the money you already paid for the creature creator. You're also not guaranteed a copy of the game for buying the creature creator. Why do you keep calling it a pre-order? You're so wrong, you're not even wrong.

Chicken Little? Well that's a new one :D
Someone already mentioned the 10.00 off, which I replied to and said it should be a universal 10.00 off, not just for buying from EA.
Also, I can't believe the way you justified the retail release of a character creator. Stating how integral it is to the Spore universe. You think Spore is the only game that costs a lot of money? Many games costs tons of money, they don't go out of their way to release a retail version of one part of the game. You sound like you feel sorry for this big budget company and would buy into anything they put out simply because the game is costing "lots of money" You're coming off like a complete sucker there, but EA and Will Wright thanks you. Bringing piracy into this was just idiotic.

@LittleBigPlaneteer (Follow me!!): Hold on there chicken little. If you buy online (from EA) you get 10 subtracted from the game if you have bought the creature creator.
Also, the creature creator cost a lot of money to develop and is not filled with just trivial technology. It's fully featured and ties into the whole Spore universe (i.e. sharing, the game, etc). It makes sense to charge for something that cost a lot of money to make to pay for all the smart people who made it.
If you want things for free, go pirate PC games.

So i don't get it. If you pay $10 now is it deducted from the final price of the game as fpunzi said? If that's the case then what's the big deal? People gladly paid $40 for gta5 prologue and to me that's a freaking demo. Albeit a huge and beautiful demo... but still a demo.

I'm really looking forward to Spore, but wow... a character creator? Really? For $10? For $10 you can have a whole game on the current console of your choice.
And if it authenticates like they say it will, I'll be getting a console version - unless those do it as well, in which case I'll get the PC version after all, just - you know, without that part attached.

@Brian Crecente: I still consider it a demo though, because its primary purpose is to show a prominent feature in the game and to generate interest/hype prior to the release of the full product.
While I guess it's not that bad if they are in fact refunding that off the purchase of the full game, but it still seems like they would do a much better job of generating interest in the game if this taste of one facet of the game was just a free download.
Don't get me wrong, I still plan on buying Spore, but this is just a bad precedent. Almost as bad as trying to charge for weapon DLC in a multiplayer game :).

I've always been a big fan of games that feature character creation, going so far as to pick up games I have almost no interest in just so I can fiddle around with the character generator.
(the WWE Smackdown series comes readily to mind)
So it goes without saying that I'll be picking up Spore as well as this little creator, demo, preview...thing.
But I do still wonder if releasing this was really that great of an idea.
Sure folks like me will shell out the dough for it but games like this and the Sims have always been more geared towards the gasual gaming community, and giving them the core "fiddle around with it" content of the game seems like they might be screwing themselves out of that market of folks who were going to buy this game just to make critters with.
I don't know, time will tell I guess and knowing Maxis and Will Wright's track record it's possible that losing that segment of the population will just the difference between being amazingly successful and obscenely successful.

There is a free demo version with 1/4 the final content (which represents more of the final game than the $40 GT5 Prologue) so why complain about getting the full creature editor for $10 (which is subtracted off the final console price)? Some people are going to just play with the creature editor and not even get the full game. They're just going to make YouTube videos. Think of this as Roxio Machinima Maker for $10.

First of all, complaining about the price when there's a free version is ridiculous.
Second of all, really I think this is kind of a demo, but really more of a preview. Most demo's don't include all aspects of a games gameplay (and that would be practically impossible for a game like this).
Finally, It's nice of them to give people the option to pay $10 now for a little extra in this preview.
Regarding the references to them subtracting the price from your final purchase of Spore, I would really like some confirmation of that. I try to keep up to date on these things and this is the first I've heard of it.

And seriously, $10 is NOT that much. If you have a problem with that, just get the demo. It's fully featured, all it lacks is 75% of the creature parts.

What most of you don't understand is that there is a very good reason they charge for the full version. Quite a few people ONLY want the creature creator. If they gave away the full version of it for free they would lose LOT of money. This way they make sure that: A. People who only want the creature editor don't have to buy the full game. B. People who just want to give it a try before buying it can do that for free with the 25% version. C. People who are impatient (like me) won't have to pay an extra $10 because of it. D. They make their money. This is actually a very good, very genorous system. **************Vote for your city's best dining and nightlife. City's Best 2008. Pre-Order the Creature Creator Complete edition!
With four times as many body parts as the trial edition, the Creature Creator Complete edition has all you need to unlock your wildest imaginings.
Get the complete edition on day of release, June 17th and you can claim back the purchase price against the price of the full edition of Spore when it's released later this year.
I dont really see what the problem is (other than having to use the EA store)

I'm a little curious over how that creatures reproduction method works. I'm guessing very strangely or very painfully.
On another note, is it possible to create a mutant abomination that will say "Kill me..." with a tear in its eye?
Just wondering...

Looks like Pillow Pants has moved into your Fruit Fucker.
This looks like a day one purchase to me. I've been looking forward to Spore, so I'll pretty much buy anything that lets me feel like I'm playing it.
@TehSr0c: Does this apply to the NA version as well? Or, is it simply for the EU version. I couldn't find anything that said anything remotely to what you linked to on my regions site?
Also, does anyone know if when I buy the game from the EA store if it is going to be Mac-Compatible or if it's two separate SKUs? I'd really like $10 off the actual game and receive my fix of playing mad scientist this summer. But, I could always just buy at a local store and make damn certain I won't have to pay return shipping.

@Logician: I am going to guess asexual reproduction. No way anyone is going near that, lol.

@TehSr0c: That's why I couldn't find it! It's only on the EU site!
Us in the US of A don't deserve any kind of deal like that. Or we at least don't deserve to be told about it. I wonder if it still applies?

So has anyone seen Carlos Santana's creature? He's got it over here, his user name is catalyst.

What is the point of charging money if you intend to refund it anyways? Right, assuming that people WON'T use the refund (and thus ripping them off) AND screwing people who will buy a game cheap later or second hand. In the end it is the same fuck up they do with Battlefield: MAKING YOU PAY MONEY FOR SOMETHING THAT IS AN INTEGRAL PART OF A GAME, NOT AN ADDITION. Or the other way round: THIS IS ANOTHER HORSE ARMOR. A fruit fucking horse armor, but still an horse armor.
