A Blurry Screen From Diablo III
Posted by Mike Fahey at 8:40 PM on June 28, 2008
Diablo III lead designer Jay Wilson took the stage at the Blizzard Worldwide Invitational 2008 to treat fans to a first look at the gameplay in the title, and while I will leave details to our embedded reporter Lesley Smith, who will be giving you the full skinny on the announcement shortly, I couldn't help but post this blurry screen captured from the live stream of the event.
Mmmmm, it's like coming home, isn't it?

It's looking good. I'm not that much of a Diablo fan (I did play Diablo II with friends, though), but I just might "rent" this.

Why has an overrated series like Diablo managed to stay in so many peoples' hearts?
I suppose one could say the same about Final Fantasy.

@SpyderMS: Ok, having watched the live feed, let me reassure you that the graphics are pretty damned gorgeous. Beautiful even.
What I'm curious about is what the system specs were of the machine it was running on...or for the game even. There was an awful lot of shit going on..

I don't understand the hype, but I haven't played the first two, which might explain that.

Why are people commenting on the 'gorgeous graphics' when looking at such a tiny, blurry image? I mean this could be a screenshot of NWN as far as I'm concerned...
Not that I'm complaining... It's Diablo III and all... but gorgeous? from that? really?

@Kanoopy: Yay indeed! =)
Good thing they didn't make it as an MMO. Now we only need the release date.
This is seriously the only game I'm updating my PC for.

Blizzard servers implode, causing all loss of information. More than 9 million WoW players quit, massive financial debt for Blizzard. Diablo III never released.
In another news, yes, those are gorgeous graphics.

@JerrD74: RIP George Carlin: From the video on the site I would say that the graphics are OK, slightly above NWN. Nothing spectacular going on in there, except maybe the number of enemies at times. Again Blizzard showcases it's texture artists skills, the underlying geometry is rather crude, but textures and lighting rise it to the level it is. And that's just great, looks good and most likely runs smoothly even on slightly older machines.

It's been so long. Back at the day I used to call out Diablo for being such a braindead clickfest compared to the RPG's I played, but now, I welcome it back with open arms. It's been so long.

@Ashurahori: I would wager that they have just pre-cut many pieces of the environment to be destructable and trigger the pieces with some ingame physics when something hits them. Look at the gargoyle pillars at the end of the stairs in this screenshot, both have visible polygon lines where they most likely will break.
And when I said the geometry is crude, I meant that it looks crude at the distance that specific screenshot was taken, from the normal point of view it's very richly detailed.

I've always wanted to like Diablo, but I never get more than a few hours in and I'm bored to tears. The characters, creatures and levels look infinitely more interesting in this one, though.

@ara: Go look at the Witch doctor videos, where he blows up a bench that flies up in the air, and hits a ledge. When it DOES hit the ledge, it breaks in that exact position.
Seriously, either they are creating a TON of different pre-animations, or this game has the Euphoria engine or something. Just to say that there's more to it than graphics, and Blizzard has always designed their games to run on all machines.

@Ashurahori: Ah, didn't mean on the gargoyles themselves, but on the pillars they are standing on. The one of the left is easier to spot, the pillar changes shade in the middle. That's a polygon line, the rest are just textures. When you make polygonal cut like that, you either make clearly visible 3 dimensional feature on the object, which it's not, or cut one object to two separate ones, which is most likely the case since lighting is different on the two halves of the pillar. The upper half is destructable. All the parts of environment being destroyed in the videos are most likely pre-cut like this, waiting intact until something hits them and then ingame physics will kick in, few dust cloud particles spawn and the upper half tumbles down.

@ara: The gargoyle cracks look as if they're part of the art, though. Look at the stairs, it's covered with cracks as visible as those, and cracks that don't make any sense to where they could be broken.
And yes, some details may look polygonic, but I'm expecting the fact that you can be surprise-ambushed by hundreds of enemies at the same time, plus all the spells and effects you can pull at once to be a factor to measure the extreme kickass of how this is going to look.

@Sqeetschy: I see what you're saying. And yes, now I can see the pillar thing you're talking about, it really looks like it'll come apart.
But still, this game looks incredbly beautiful. I think this is the one game to take me out of my Diablo 2 addiction.

I really hoped they wouldn't stick with the over the top perspective. I think I'll stick to considering Hellgate: London the unofficial Diablo III, that proved you could do diablo style gameplay without outdated camera work.

@Tesahli: Just because the game uses an overhead camera doesn't make it outdated. What, are First-Person Shooters outdated because they're using a first-person perspective that's been in video games for over two decades? Nothing you said makes any sense.
