A Terrifying Glimpse Into The Future Of The Halo Franchise?
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 4:00 PM on June 25, 2008
Halo is, without a doubt, Microsoft's biggest bread-winner. By a country mile. And even with the Chief's story now finished, you can bet they're looking at ways to leverage the brand's popularity into more cash money. Halo Wars and the Peter Jackson games are a start, but what else may Microsoft have in store? This excerpt from a marketing survey, completed for a company that was very interested in Xbox 360 gaming (Intellisponse, perhaps?), was sent to us by tipster frostcircus. If you're a Halo purist, you may not want to click through.
Sure, this is just a marketing survey. More an indication of what Microsoft are thinking than what they're actively doing with the series. But even the thought of them thinking about a Halo racing game or a "more family friendly Halo game" (Scene It? hosted by Cortana?) should be enough to give you an indication of just how many Halo games you can expect to start hearing about over the next few years.

I personally find this survey to be fake (the survey order coming from MS that is) but thats probably because my brain is COMPLETELY rejecting the possibility of Halo Karts, Super Spartan Brothers: Brawl or worse
"The Covenant Trilogy"... The story of the Halo series retold through the eyes of one of the funny little guys.
Seriously though, I know MS thinks marketing and promotion wise when planning development but *surely* even they would not do something like this...

All that and no Halo-themed singing game? I'm disappointed. Now we may never encounter Chief's secret desire to become a Soul Man.

I personally loved Halo3, and thought it was a brilliant end to the trilogy (except the Single player, which was rubbish, except when played co-op).
I can almost accept an RTS Halo game, but thats about it. Like most sequels, they need to stop when they've reached a good point, and move onto something new.
Id like to see where Microsoft/Bungie could take a FPS, without Having to worry about the Halo franchise. They know whats made Halo good, they can see whats made COD good, theres other good FPS shooters around. So take all that, and see what they can come up with.

@i_9:
To any *or all of them. Personally, I would love to play any of those. Squad based shooter? Hell yeah. Halo 3 Extension (MC is alive!)? Fuck yes. New shooter/Pre-quel to the original Halo trilogy? Very much. New shooter/Same universe, different protagonist? Please.
The rest, I'd remain skeptical. Though these, I'd be willing to buy no matter what they show me pre-launch.

No to Halo "family", HaloKart, and Halo Arcade (unless it's a well-done lightgun shooter, with full size BR lightguns).
Everything else, sure, why not? Just don't get all "Guitar Hero" on us, Microsoft. Halo Lego would do VERY well and fill the "family" niche too.

this is silly. if they really wanted to milk it, then just do Halo 4.
not that i would be interested anyway, i'm really not into FPSs.
but seriously, what kind of darn survey is this ?
they should do one with a scoring from 1-11 (since theres 11 choices). it makes more sense.
so if everyone clicked "might or might not purcahse" for all choices, then they end up back at square 1. silly

I think a Halo MMO would kick serious butt.
The Halo universe has, imo, been one of the most epic Sci-Fi universes. It's got everything from massive space vessels to the gritty marines, and the whole underdog lead-and-gunpowder vs the dominant lasers-and-plasma factions.
IMO, if they set it up like Planetside, (or even WWII online, where the game is run entirely by players), where it's a MMOFPS/RPG, it would be awesome.
The universe is already there, and factions and whatnot, it just needs to be (wisely) tapped, and you'd have an amazing MMO. Although, if they do make such a game, I get the feeling everyone would be a Spartan, and totally ruin the MMO (for a Halo MMO to work, you'd need Spartans to be really rare).

The main problem I see with a LEGO Halo is that Star Wars and Indiana Jones are good because they have a familiar yet still compelling story to make fun and silly. Problem with Halo is that there isn't really a story to base the game off of. I mean I've been around since the release of Halo 2, and I STILL don't know what the hell I'm doing. I mean all I really know is that there's the aliens with plasma weapons and there's the aliens that look like mushrooms. I mean that's about it.

@phinehas: You laugh now, but when Master Chief crashlands on that hidden Forerunner facility that the odd object at the end of the Halo 3 credits will turn out to be, and gets upgraded by the Forerunners there to have a new, bishonen-tastic cyborg body, with no helmet and flowing white hair, so that he can star in his own Devil May Cry knockoff where he tracks down rogue members of the black R&D project that made the Spartans who have ALSO gained access to advanced Forerunner technology, and one of whom is actually John's father, while John's accompanied by Cortana in her own new, and very well endowed, cyborg body, we'll see who's laughing.
In other news, Itegaki was hired by Microsoft Game Studios today...

I honestly wonder if some of the disappointing directions taken in Halo 3 were less of a result of Bungie's desires and more of a result of Microsoft's goal to satisfy the college-age jock? While Halo 2 had a ridiculous number of problems, the storyline became a very important part of the franchise only to be dropped in Halo 3. Although many felt dropped by the abrupt ending employed in 3, it's undeniable that there were some great moments of intrigue and parallels between the lives of Arbiter and the Master Chief. I often find myself wishing that Bungie had been given another year to create Halo 3... Of course sometimes slapping another year on a project may result in the watering down of more of the content.

It's not that they're thinking about making it, they're just thinking of any possible thing they can do.
And then the interest tells them what is worth doing from every possible scenario.
I highly doubt they have a family fun Halo game, or Halo Kart, in development and are researching it now.
They say every possible thing, see what people want. Seeing some of the awful things on that list don't frighten me one bit - because they will never be.

Yeah, some of those sound kinda cool.
I mean, the Halo universe isn't supposed to revolve entirely around John, is it?
Ide like to play as that black guy. Or, play as one of John's fellow marines and watch him kill tons of guys while just trying not to get killed.
That could be third person.
The pre-Halo halo game sounds cool. The Fall of Reach, anyone?
What about a game where you command the Grunt army? Say, you play as a grunt (in 3rd person, ide want) and when you die you change characters to one of the living grunts.
But you can also command the horde. Like the grunt general.
Not in Halo Wars style; but a more from the battlefield barebones rts.
It would be mostly a massive 3rd person shooter.
I would totally get that. And its pretty much got MMO built in.
Just... dont call it Halo... Be more creative.
Ide totally get that

I liked the Halo series for what it's worth; I honestly don't want to see ANY of those choices. Except for the Halo Wars (why bother putting it as a choice when they're already making it?). Anywhosers, I think they should let Halo just gently slip into the annals of history. Of course that is NEVER going to happen, seeing as how Microsoft would beat my suggestion and bury it alive...much like Joe Pesci in Casino.

@hk458:
You know, I think of the constant screams of children on Halo 3 matches on XBL and the first thing that pops to mind is: Can I get that multiplied by a few million? That'd be awesome.
The only redeeming factor of a Halo MMO would be that it would serve as a retard pen for online gaming.
My vision of a future Halo game would be one of two things: One: million year prequel, a tactical shooter illustrating the war between Forerunner and Flood.
The other is far better, a game set before or after the Covenant War when certain factions of humanity are rebelling against the UNSC. Tactical squad-based shooter where you play not as a Spartan but an ODST squad leader, that or the pre-powered-armor variant of Spartan.

Fuck off you pretentious fanboys. Why does everyone act like Microsoft have run the Halo franchise into the ground - three games over the course of, what, six years?
A Halo Lego game.. maaaybeee, but to even suggest the idea shows Microsoft have the wrong idea about their fanbase. A new Halo shooter without the MC would need to do a lot to win a purchase from me.. a Halo prequel set during the fall of Reach would be an instant buy from me though. This is all assuming that Bungie will be at the helm or at least heavily involved in the development of any of these titles. But honestly I'd love to see a continuation of the MC's story (only if it isn't forced - they left the door open for another iteration in the series at the end of Halo 3 so I'm guessing they've got some groundwork for a continuation..)
Most of all though.. can Bungie make a new game with a completely original IP? Please? :(

Halo never was all that great to begin with, what it was was lucky. As a franchise, it should never have seen the success it did, only the circumstances under which it was birthed made it that success.
First, launched with the Xbox. Highly polished, though flawed, it was the best thing on the system at the time and for quite a while, I'd argue until KOTOR.
Second, the controls and damage system, these are what made console FPSes the huge genre they are today. Before Halo, there was GoldenEye and Perfect Dark, with some oddball attempts like the Turok games and the god-awful South Park game. Halo created the mold from which all console shooters after it, and frankly most shooters period, have been wrought.
Third, largely political. Halo's storyline about humanity under siege following devastating attacks by a fanatic alien religion, with a lone hero - faceless, could be any of us, rising above the odds to lead humanity back from the brink? Halo was released in November of 2001. You can probably see why that underlying message might resonate.
Halo is the Star Wars of gaming in that it became much more than it by all means should have been through a mix of technological breakthroughs, mold-breaking and genre-defining attributes, and political and social catharsis at times of great tumult, Star Wars is widely credited with lifting a nation's spirits in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Halo, on a smaller level, could claim similar quality.
Halo is HALO because the work transcended its own quality, it became something cultural, a blockbuster, even if the dialogue was bad(To War...), the level design overrated (Oh boy! I get to go backtracking again!) and the art design stolen entirely from Aliens.
Microsoft should either let it go or do something with it that hasn't been done, a Halo 4 is only going to disappoint people.

@andregalan: I fail to see why some of the reasons you mentioned made Halo the success it is right now. But I'll just state 3 reasons why I made the call that Halo was pretty damn good.. 1st, everybody was excited what Microsoft is gonna offer to gamers with the launch of the Xbox, when I saw MS press confrence footage of Halo.. I never thought of poltics, aliens or the damage system.. I only thought.. that game looks sweet, I want it!
2nd, I forgot.. but it was cool
3rd, the multiplayer was right on the money, with introduction of live and people getting better connected the game offered a high attachment rate to the game.
I do agree however, that without the triology, Halo franchaise wouldn't have as many fans as they do now. Without playing Master Chief triology games, I might have not recognized Halo lore and got intrested in it. However, there is potential in Halo universe to get some decent games out of it.
Halo cart racing would be fun.. but not as a game on it's own.. maybe an XBL Arcade game thu.

They have like 5 for the same type of game "New Halo shooter where you don't play as Master Chief", "A New Halo shooter that is an extension of the original game", "A New Halo shooter with a story...(prequel)", "A Halo squad based shooter game"...Jesus.

I am a TREMENDOUS fan of Halo, and my greatest wish is for some kind of Halo Racer, or Halo Party.
The best franchises are the ones that can be made fun of. Not the ones whose story ends up ruined because of horrible serious sequels.

Halo Lego: No thank you, I'd just play Halo
Halo MMO: Depends
Halo Racing: Die. Please. Just die.
Family friendly: Needs far more details
3rd Person Halo: Make it happen, please :)
Arcade game: Go on....
Not Play As MC: That's fine.
Halo Wars: Cautiously Optimistic
Squad Based Shooter: Don't we have enough of these? If it distinguishes itself and has a great addition to the on-going universe
Older-Time Shooter: Sure, but it really depends. More interested in what happens next.
Extension: Presumably you mean sequel. So yes, I'd like that.

i think a pre halo game would be kinda cool. some of the missions from the fall of reach were awesome, and there are a lot interesting charterers in the halo universe , i wouldn't be apposed to a spin off, as long as it had a good story to go with it...because to me halo is just another FPS , its story is what drew me in. im sure this will most likely happen, because the halo movie is based on the fall of reach , and it would only make sense to make a game to go along with the movie.
and there nothing wrong with spin offs , look at Metal Gear.

Wow Lego Halo is real might be cool. I liked the Lego Star Wars games. Plus would it not be funny if the April Fools joke from EGM that every one thought was fake turned out to be true.
A Halo MMO might be pretty cool. I have not played Huxley yet but that game looks cool. So a MMO about Halo might be pretty cool.

For the rest of it... oh boy, Microsoft Mario! HaloKart! Halo Party! World of Halocraft! That's... terrible. I don't understand what the big deal is with the people who scream like bloody murder at a Halo game w/o Master Chief. It was a decent trilogy, sure, but the best one was the first one. The storyline went gradually downhill from there, and the story of 3...ugh.
How about we try a little variety, since it is good to change it up a bit.
But, besides Halo Wars, I think they should only do like 1 other Halo game. Otherwise, it turns into totally diluted crap a.k.a. Dynasty/Samurai Warriors.

I am a total Halo/Bungie apologist, so take it with a grain of salt. But I'd hardly call 5 projects (H:CE, H2, H3 PJackson, HWars) over eight years is hardly running the franchise into the ground when you look at the grand scheme of things. And while some people didn't like H3, it's not like they are pumping out Halo shovelware. They've all been solid titles so far.

Lego? Might be pretty cool, but a game based off of a game? Lame. (awesome rhyme unintended)
MMO? No.
Halo racing game? Wasn't that the entire point of the last level of Halo 1? Hands up if you enjoyed that level. Exactly.
hMore family friendly? Oh God, they're trying to do a RoboCop on Halo. Let me put it this way: NO.
Third person Halo game? Eh, what'd be the point? Star Wars: Battlefront already has us covered for that (we need a new one, though >_>)
Halo arcade? Now, I have a fondness for arcade games, so maybe. A game with an Assault Rifle lightgun=Win. Or, hell, a rail shooter with a mock-up of a warthog, for up to three players. That would be the shit.
No Master Chief? Halo 4: Redshirt Rampage doesn't really sound all that great to me (unless you play as Sergeant Avery Johnson; that man is a beast), it's like Half-Life without Gordon Freeman. Wait, bad example.
Halo Wars is already in development, isn't it? So who cares what I think? Eh, too similar to StarCraft 2 (to people who don't know the fine details of either franchise) and I'm betting more people will go for Blizzard's offering.
Squad based shooter? The original Halo was this, to an extent, but honestly, unless you're all Spartans, who cares? And if you are, what could possibly stand in your way?
Prequel? Something along the lines of the books would be cool, but honestly, is there any more that people want to know? Not a rhetorical question; I don't know very much of the Halo story besides the events surrounding the first and a smidgen of the other two, but there doesn't seem to be any major story development to cover during the pre-Halo years of, well, Halo. And without the story, the rest doesn't matter.
"Extension"? Sounds like Halo episodic content, but I don't think the story would really work in an episodic format. For example, you'd probably find out what happens to Johnny One-Seventeen in the first episode, which kind of kills any suspense that there might be.
Unless you combine some of these ideas (Halo episodes where you play as a different major character each episode? Might work, now that the MCPO is out of the picture), they're all varying levels of shit.

Halo Lego: Yes, that would be pretty awesome.
Halo MMO: No.
Halo Racing: Just bring back the "Race" gametype from Halo 1, and stick it in a proper sequel.
Family friendly: Sure, as long as it is fun, enjoyable, and faithful to the franchise.
3rd Person Halo: Like pre-Xbox Halo? DO IT! That stuff looked like it would be so much fun.
Arcade game: Sure, as long as it is fun, enjoyable, and faithful to the franchise.
Not Play As MC: Sure, as long as it is fun, enjoyable, and faithful to the franchise. Marines and ODSTs are cool.
Halo Wars: I'm not very good at RTS games, but I still want to play Halo Wars.
Squad Based Shooter: Sure, as long as it is fun, enjoyable, and faithful to the franchise.
Older-Time Shooter: Sure, as long as it is fun, enjoyable, and faithful to the franchise. There's lots of backstory that can be expanded upon.
Extension: Like a new Campaign based on Halo 3's gameplay? I'd love that. H3's campaign was fun, but it was way too short and the fun (and story) petered out at the end, with two poorly-designed levels back-to-back.
(shamelessly copy-pasted format from Zeouterlimits)

Now a "new Halo shooter where you don't play as Master Chief," that would be interesting. To play as the Elite who would be the last Arbiter, to get into the back story of the Covenant Religion, that would sound quite interesting.
