Awesome IKEA Gameplay Footage
Posted by Owen Good at 1:00 AM on June 30, 2008
This hits close to home, because home is a shithole (that's what $AU 1562.4 rents you in Silicon Valley) and I'll soon be paying IKEA plenty to make it look less so, because it's right around the corner in the East P.A. and I can't afford Ethan Allen. And if you want to trick out your Sims pad with BJARNUM or HENSVIK or DIKTAD or whatever fake words the Swedes come up with next, that expansion pack has now dropped (as of Thursday). This is the trailer showing all the shit you'll be throwing in your Sim dumpster in three years.
Clearly, there is very little probative value to this post, I just wanted to write the word DIKTAD (the name of a toy chest they sell). Three years ago my friend Ryan (Flying Squirrel, to those in the know), who now writes for the Sacramento Bee, went to IKEA with me to help me trick out my former shithole (rented for $AU 1140.55 a month. Housing bubble? What is this you speak of? Rent is a rock solid investment that only appreciates.) We came around the corner and saw DIKTAD and that instantly became our new term of abuse for each other, like "Heat Stick" and "Grandma's Tongue". And now I bequeath it to you. Please call each other that in the comments.

@Yonderboy: LOL! And what's sad, is that that is so true, I'm going to go home later today to fix an ikea bed that keeps falling apart after being moved from one side of the bedroom to another. Glue....lots of glue.

Combined, they must occupy more space than half the internet.

It's all well and good, but will your Sims also get the meatballs in gravy and cranberry sauce?
I'd almost buy this out of curiousity had I not purged all things Sim from my PC two years ago. Once you add a few add ons it all seems to get a..bit....slooower....

@Turtlestack: Funny how we come to associate certain character traits to certain names...
All the Julies I've known were pure bitches (not nuts, just bitches).
Nathalies tend to be rather dumb (again, in my coincidence-filled experience), and Juliens... well, Juliens are total DIKTADs.

The realism of this set is pretty impressive. Move any of the IKEA furniture from one room to another, and watch as advanced physics engines realistically model the low quality compressed wood falling apart. Just like in real life!

Reminds me of that scene in Fight Club when Edward Norton's character walks through an IKEA catalogue - only without the biting satire.

Either I'm getting too old or games are getting too focused but for the first time in my life I don't belong to any segment of the intended audience for a video game. Well, maybe 'American Girl: Julie Finds A Way' but I at least dated a couple of girls named Julie (all of 'em nuts, by the way).

Not everywhere has low rent prices.

@Antiterra: I've never known any Juliens-- blame my nor'easter upbringing?-- but I've known many diktads. And a couple Dik Dik Van Diks, too. All the Natalies I've met have been really unkind-- and the Julies, while not unlikeable at all, have been decidedly odd-- usually in ways that would make Parson Weems poke his eyes out, and have made Larry Flynt a terribly, terribly wealthy man.

You guys might scoff at this, but each of these expansion packs average around 3 million copies. That's a shitload of money. IKEA gets free exposure and those who play The Sims get licensed stuff. Its really no worse than licensed cars in Gran Turismo or real teams and names in sports games. Regardless if you like it or not, this is casual gaming done right :E

You're all a bunch of JERKERs! :P
Anyway, as previously pointed out, these names are not fake:
BJARNUM refers to Bjärnum, which is a place in Sweden.
HENSVIK is yet another place in Sweden.
DIKTAD means 'made up' and is also used to refer to a piece of poetry (the swedish word for poem is "dikt")
Commonly, IKEA products refer to places or names, or describe the functionality of the product with some corny play on words.

@Vidunder: in some places a $1500 a month does buy a literal shit hole! here in boston $1500 a month buys a tiny studio apartment filled with mice and cock roaches to steal your food, in a nice gang ruled neighborhood with complementary muggings every payday and break-ins to keep you from having anything remotely valuable. oh and terrible public transportation that never follows the set schedule... oh and last but not least a slum lord that will demand his rent on time, but wont fix a damn thing in your apartment.

@Owen Good: For $1500 a month, you must be splurging for a 1 bedroom unit. You can save yourself $200 and get a studio. As for my self, i've convinced the company I work for to relocate my position to their Chicago office, so i'm moving there in 2 months where I can get an apartment for half the cost here. The company is even footing the bill for moving costs. As for Ikea, everytime I find something I would want to buy on their website, it's only available for purchase in-store, and there's no way in hell i'm going near East Palo Alto.

I lived in Los Gatos for a couple of years during the dot com heyday. Cost me $2800 a month for a tiny 2 bedroom bungalow on a busy street...oh and there was a super-tiny one-room addition on the back that charged $800 a month - you literally could not swing a cat in that palace. The first tenant in the addition was a super-bitch and since the hot water came from my hot water heater and she refused to offer to pay a portion I shut the hot water off whenever she took a shower. Happy days.
Cute point #1: turns out years later watching HGTV that the house in LG was IDENTICAL to Walter Disney's first home. Exact same house.
Cute point #2: the IKEA product names are actual Swedish words. Certain product categories named after places, food, objects etc. "DIKTAD" however, probably means what it sounds like.
