Clone Wars On Wii: Wagglesabers
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 12:20 PM on June 19, 2008
Read this: "The promise of a Wii Lightsabre game has hung in the air since the Wii hit the shelves. We think this is the game that delivers on that promise". That's Ken Fox, from Krome Studios, developers of the upcoming Clone Wars game for the Wii. Excited? Cool those jets. He also says this: "We've tried to make the lightsabre control as intuitive and fun as possible. It's not a Lightsabre simulator, but when you swing your Wii remote left to right; your character does the same. You use the thumbstick on the nunchuck to move your character and swing the Wii remote to swing your Lightsabre". Wait, that doesn't deliver on the promise at all! Unless the promise was for yet another third-party action game based on a Star Wars story, only this time with waggle. Which it wasn't! More info on the game below, which is a must-read if you want to see a man use the word "lightsabre" 20 times in a single interview.

When will people learn that Lightsaber is spelt with 'saber' and not 'sabre'.

The thing is, light saber's aren't made of steel. Because of that, it makes it 1500% harder and fucking over our heads too complicated to be able to get anywhere near 1:1 mapping.
With light sabers, one shot is all you need, and what makes the movies/cartoons/etc. so entertaining is that since both combatants are Jedi, they can parry and block so many fucking strikes that you're head explodes with juice, not orange juice folks (maybe purple). People will expect to be able to cut through anything, but they won't be able to. It'd be as stiff and retarded as Soul Caliber with Vader fighting some ninja guy who's just got a katana, which in a game that's "gimmick'd" out towards this saber mapping buzz, means you'll end up getting annoyed and the game will get shit scores.
Rainbows are the best.

Don't you people know how tired you would get from having to constantly swing around the Wiimote for this? They should just implement a mechanic like the one in No More Heroes where it just detects the height level of the Wiimote, but you still use the A button to swing. Maybe they could even improve on it by using three different height levels instead of just two. I'm sure that alone could lead to a pretty strategic lightsaber game.

@Aethyr: wii-mote is already sensitive enough
1:1 would be no fun
that's the thing people don't realize, plus it rhymes!
keep in mind, however, i don't condone waggle-fests like the above post implies.
someone commented the following before, but i agreed so:
it should be 1:1 while you "freestyle" then trigger canned animations for attacks.
something like the way it works in wii sports baseball,
except in a competent game instead of the lamest 1/5 of a disc.

I personally don't see what the huge obsession with 1:1 lightsaber movement is.
It would look all herky jerky like the tennis rackets and baseball bat in Wii Sports. Not at all very Jedi like...
All I want is a game that if I swing a lightsaber / sword left to right, my character swings left to right. Or if I do a stab, my character does a stab. Or if I do a downward slash, my character does a downward slash. You get the point.

Take a shot every time the man uses the word lightsaber.
Also, where's my lightsaber simulator?
Does the Wii have the technology to display 1:1 movements from the controller to the lightsaber on the screen? If not I want my money back so I can buy stamps to send letters to George Lucas, Lucas arts and Nintendo angry letters about not making my lightsaber simulator.

@Green-clad Gamer Dude: i understand all that, but i still think it would work.
as evidence i submit the aforementioned bat-swinging in wii sports baseball.
if you twirl the remote like a batter does, the bat moves like that.
you can do a "call your shot," but you can't quite knock the dirt off your cleats.
it assumes you're holding the remote a specific way,
and maps the on-screen actions to what the remote should be doing.
the game only has, like, one animation for the swing,
but add in a few different animations for different swing angles and it's a win.
i dunno, that's the way i see it.

@snowlock: The Wiimote can sense the direction you're swinging, but it isn't accurate enough for 1:1 fighting. The only way it could do that is if: 1. It had more advanced motion sensing capabilites. 2. You were playing in a huge sensor-filled room and it relied on the IR precision of the mote. Or 3. If you were using some sort of Wiimote with a IR detectors on the sides and maybe a few addition sensor bars.
Also, the lack of resistance would always be problematic anyways.

@snowlock: Es posible I surpose. Though it'd be nice if they gave you a couple locked swing animation, but you control saber movement from the wrist down.
@DrunkenNinja12: I disagree. Some of the cartoon stuff looks really good on wii, what I hate is the watered down gameplay to meet those graphics. As I've mentioned infinity+1 times on kotaku posts I'd love it if battlefront III on wii was made to look like the original cartoon clone wars series (the samurai jack style one, not this 3d animation stuff).

@alitcofsky: Krome studios is the same studio that's doing the force unleashed for wii, which doesn't look half bad. ON the other hand, that means this is game most likely a streamlined version of the force unleashed's 2 player duel mode and nothing more. If it has four player split screen or 8 player online (and I never said it was likely) I will be very interested. At this point I'm just dissappointed. Also, I was kind of hoping for an adventure game, not an arena dueler.

I just sorta wish some studio would go ahead, bite the bullet, and make some 1:1 sword fighting game for the wii, just so the fanboys will find out just how big a steaming pile it'll be, and stop clamouring for it.
But hey. It's just my opinion. Maybe all the developers are studiously avoiding it so that when one finally comes out that development team will make all the money instead of them. Yeah, that's it.

the few pics i've seen of this new cg cartoon look like cg versions of the old one.
i kinda doubt anyone from that crew was involved, but it would be awesome.
i thought the original genndy tartakovsky clone wars cartoons were great.
i watched it before seeing revenge of the sith, and i'm glad i did.
general grievous is such a bad-ass in the cartoons,
until mace windu force-crushes him and sets him up to chump out in the movie.
there are a couple of other ways the cartoon fits into the story-arc,
but this probably isn't the place to discuss all of that.

@snowlock: Actually I heard the director or creative director or something from the cartoon series was the lead on the new cg ones. No offense to hime but I don't think his vision translates to cg very well...all a matter of taste of course, but I loved the cartoon series, but I'm pretty "meh" about the new cg movie. Probably see so many cartoon games for the Wii because going stylisticly simple/low detail, (e.g. cartoony) is the only way you can make a game look good compared to ps3/360 games, Since you don't NEED the extra horsepower.

I hate to say it, but when I saw this trailer before the Incredible Hulk last weekend, I had to look away. It's the original cartoon with all of the life sucked out of it. The worst thing I've seen in a long time, and another sign that George Lucas is not done raping the once good name "Star Wars."

you know, a 1:1 game would be awkward for a few reasons, the lack of balance would make the swinging awkward(part of the reason that in lore only jedi can use lightsabers well), animating based on your movements woudl most liely lead to bizarre arm contortions as it tried to synch you up with the on-screen model. and since when you were parried ingame, a real feedback would stop you, the animations would be desynchronised. so yeah not realistic for any system, and you really wouldnt want it. As for this game, its art style is not particularly appealing in this game, but i will keep an eye, its a third party game for the wii, you have to keep an eye for those.

@Aethyr: hah! you tried it?
seriously, i went and tried it and i definitely see what you mean.
there's a delay between when you start moving the remote and when the bat moves.
unless it's input lag from the tv, which i doubt.
especially since once you get it moving it responds well.
it still doesn't negate the idea i posted above,
considering how the swings themselves and their angles are the important part.

Wow, this post completely misses the point.
First, Luke seems to have the impression that there's only one move (waggle). I read the article and I get the impression there are plenty of moves, i.e. it isn't 1:1 but you gesture a move and your character attempts to do something appropriate, which can be excellent if done well (we'll see). This isn't entirely made clear.
Second, Luke may still be under the impression that 1:1 movement was (a) technically possible to detect with the Wii controls - it isn't, if you move fast - (b) a good idea - it isn't, because with a lightsaber battle, somebody else can block your move and then what happens to your '1:1 movement'?
Don't get me wrong, this game might be shit, and its lightsaber control might be shit too - I have no idea. But if a game ever successfully achieves 'lightsaber' control on the Wii then this will be precisely the way it does it.
The post didn't mention what may (?) be a real problem with this game - it sounded to me like there was bugger all in it except lightsaber duels. I.e. rather than letting you do exciting action stuff, is the game really more like a fighting game but with Star Wars characters? (Hold on, Namco just called - they want their shit idea back.)
Maybe that was a wrong impression too, I hope so.

@paulmcg: That's why it would be fun. It'd be like what would happen if you gave 2 Stormtroopers lightsabers and told them to have a go at each other. It'd be pathetic. The single player would either have to consist of you fighting the Sith "Special" Division, or you just getting killed over and over. The point would be the multiplayer- where someone equally unskilled with the saber would take you on in a desperate, flailing struggle.
