As for the news...its good and bad. Why bad?
Because as a Wii owner i kinda hate to see _new_ games ported both to PS2 and Wii, usually that means means the "1.5 Gamecube" abilities will not be used and game will just be ps2 graphics game with waggle tacked on. =(

Please don't remind me it's nearly the 9th year since the PS2 was released. It's actually a little sad that I've bought WAY more PS2 games this year than Wii, 360 or PS3. Two years after the PS2 came out I know I was buying a decent amount of games for it.

The PS2 is still going strong. Lego Indiana Jones and Alone in the Dark were just released (AitD is a stinker, but still..), and Tomb Raider: Underworld, Sonic Unleashed and Ghostbusters will be out later this year. I don't know if any other console has ever been able to pull off what the PS2 is doing, i.e. sell millions and have new games released for it, even after 9 years? Sure, the Genesis had a pretty long life in Brazil, but that was only one country, not worldwide..

My PS2 slim has been put in the reserves, although its memory lives on within my PS3. Considering most of what I'm playing is PS2 games at the moments I'm probably one of those adding to the software sales catching up on some of the titles before they're almost impossible to get.

heh, no big surprise, really. Even the best of the best eventually has to die out. Heck, I'm of the opinion that the PS2 is the greatest system ever made (with the possible exception of the SNES), and I've only played the thing for maybe a grand total of two hours over the past year.

Such is life, all things must die. Heck, I'm sure that we'll be seeing the exact same thing in five years to the DS when the DS Advance or whatever comes out.

Puh-leeze, get over it already. Yes, the PS2 is on the decline, but to still be selling 13+ million consoles this late in its lifecycle? Absolutely incredible. If the price point ever hits the $99 mark, expect sales to continue. I'm sure overall sales will decrease for the current fiscal year, but it should still be around/about 10 mil for it's NINTH year. I would say that that's pretty good in my book.

So how did the first Xbox and GameCube do in their 8th year? Oh, right...

Anyway, I just today hooked up my PS2 fat to the television in the living room. Our DVD play went kaput and so the old PS2 is back in action as a interim DVD player.

The PS2 slim is still in the gaming cabinet with nine other consoles all hooked to the same television.

@hchaudh1: Well, It comes from Sony selling 9.24 million ps3s THIS financial year, an increase of 5.63 million over last year. So taking that into account last years ps3 sales would be 3.61 million sold making a grand total of (drum roll please).... 12.85 million sold at the end of this financial year. I'm sure since then they've sold a few more so that would make it over the 13 million mark.

I bought one of those limited edition pink PS2s last summer, just for the Hell of it. Made me chuckle when I was ripping off limbs and smashing heads in GoW II, as it seemed.. odd to be playing such a violent game on this silly, pink console (I ordered FF X and the first GoW a couple of days after picking up the PS2 + FF XII, got them in the mail a couple of days later, played GoW, dropped my jaw and shat bricks at the Hydra boss and bought the limited edition of GoW II the next day.. The moment I first saw the Hydra boss still stands as one of the most awesome moments I've ever had in any video game).

127 million PS2's sold as of December 2007, it's a monster machine. It is by far my favorite system, and I own 70 Playstation 2 games. This is probably why PS3 is such a disappointment to me, as I don't feel it will ever live up to the PS2's legacy.
