Diablo III Videos (Trailer, Gameplay Footage)
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:15 PM on June 28, 2008
You've no doubt already read up on it all by now, so give your brain a rest and soak up these three Diablo III clips. First, and above, is the game's official trailer. After the jump, an artwork clip and, best of all, a 19-minute gameplay shakedown.

Anyone else disappointed that this witch doctor is obviously replacing the necromancer? He had such a cool backstory. :(
Hopefully I'm just getting way ahead of myself and they are just going to revamp the class. Blood golem + iron maiden was a tad silly.

I enjoyed the speculation more than the announcement. I mean we all knew Diablo III would be made eventually, but people shouting things like "Barbie Horse Adventures on ICE!" and "Flaring Nostrils of Ice XIV!" were very entertaining. Guess I'll have to go play with the random game title creator again.

Now THIS is a game! I guess my brand new Acer Gemstone 8920 will get some Blizzard action in the following months with both Starcraft II and Diablo III. Seriously, Maxis, Firaxis, Blizzard and Valve are what PC gaming is all about!
I didn't think I'd get excited by this game until I saw this very addictive-looking gameplay footage. These guys know what they're doing and know that these two upcoming games will earn them another gazillion dollars, and good for them. And the trailer is awesome too! I wish other companies like Ubisoft and Take-Two and all would take note and stop releasing their "trying to be hip and convey our marketing message" and start making really artistic and well, totally awesome trailers.

This is awesome news. And while i definitely will buy this game no matter what the design worries me a bit.. Just like Starcraft 2 got some of the "toony" looks that warcraft have it looks like D3 got some as well. To tell the truth it looks more like Dungeon Siege than Diablo.

I've never played any of the previous Diablos, but this looks totally badass! I gotta get it. I've only played a few "dungeon crawlers" and apparently, the Diablo series revolutionized the sub-genre. Diablo 3 looks like it is out to do it again. The music and sound effects are amazing!

Combat looks far updated Hengst. Much more reactive and fun with higher use of skills. If combat was like that in D2 I may not have found it so boring. This is certainly not just a left clickfest with a bit of right clicking for skills and a hammering of the potion hotkeys. Just look how it looks when he starts using all the different skills in a crowd of enemies. Like some kind of console action game, not something you control just with your cursor and hotkeys. Hopefully the rest of the game has had updates as significant as the combat :)

At the risk of sounding like a detractor, the game looks quite a bit like the previous game with enhanced graphics. While I know I will buy this game, I am keeping my expectations in check until I see more new footage. Much like Starcraft 2, for all the years Blizzard has had these games in development, they look awfully a lot like merely graphically upgraded versions of their previous incarnations.
So far the differences seem like those between Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2. At least cosmetically. SO before I go out and name my first child after the developers at Blizzard, I am going to wait to see more.

@Llost: I don't think they implemented all of the items yet to be honest, and i believe they set certain items to drop so they don't give much away.
It looks like a LOT more action and enemies than previous titles, and i love the idea of destroying parts of the environment to your advantage (making a wall fall on a bunch of zombies). Witchdoctor looks like a Necro / Sorc hybrid, so it looks like they aren't going to bring my favorite class (necro) into this game... maybe they will, who knows. Only time will tell. This game is going to be epic, i can't wait to see what they do with items, runes, and uniques / sets and such.

WHOOSH! That's exactly what I mean... At first sight Blizzard has made Diablo 3 into a graphical update which holds true to the franchise in both gameplay and mechanics. They are basically giving their fans what they want: an action RPG where you slaughter millions of baddies while still holding true to the complexity of character development through skills and such.
While Bethesda on the other hand has changed everything what made Fallout, well Fallout.

It can be an MMO, but there's really no camping involved. I don't know what changes they're making to battle.net but how it worked with D2 was that you can do a single player campaign if you wanted to and then if you wanted to go online it was basically like any other online game where you can pick a room from a list and do whatever. If you don't find a room you want then you can make your own and hope someone joins it

@GPman: If it holds to the old formula it is all about co-op, the game had a limit of 4 players in the first diablo and I am think I recall it being 8 in the second. Yet, it auto-saved your individual progress as you went so you could pick up the game from however far you were at any time and play with anyone (as was mentioned, using battle.net with a very traditional lobby system) Or actually over a number of other methods such as LAN
I hope battle.net is cool, and I am glad this is coming out around the same time as starcraft 2 (hopefully at least) one of the coolest things about diablo 2 was that when on battle.net people playing other games looked like a character from that game...

Yes blizzard will have a trifecta, now would be a good time to invest in activision stock =p hell even the stock sites are saying it. WotLK will bolster more people into playing World of Warcraft, Starcraft 2 is going to replace Starcraft as the Starlight of Korean gaming, but don't worry, SC1 will be the next favorite sport...then maybe soccer, and of course americans and the rest of the world love SC.

Looks solid, as Blizzard always is.
I played a lot of Diablo II, but I can't say I want to do a bunch of Diablo III. No offense, but it's just so much clicking. Through in a skill now and then, balance health and mana like a fast paced math/stats game. Waves of enemies. It's a good time for sure, but while something like God of War makes the combat itself fun, in Diablo you end up just looking forward to the drops, which make you more powerful, so you can kill more enemies faster, to get more drops, to become more powerful, etc...

This whole extravaganza shows just one of the many things that differentiate Blizzard from the rest of the gaming world.
They know how and when to start generating hype for a game. Look at how far along the game is! No, it isn't just in the concept mode (cough*Lionhead Studios*cough). No, they aren't talking about what the game will have (cough*Funcom*cough) but rather what it does have.
This is hype done right, ladies and gentlemen. All I can think to say is HELL YEAH!

@SicariusIV: The thing is, it's really hard to change a near perfect formula (the "near perfect" is evidenced by the fact that, after all these years, people are still playing Starcraft and Diablo2). And for Starcraft 2 I will also argue that then you should critizice every RTS that has come in the past ten years, since the genre has not evolved much since the original Starcraft.

@Hengst2404: I hear ya bro. Remember also that Blizzard is all about making sure most people can play their games on like 5-6 year old rigs, so graphic wise we will only see enhancements and killer art direction from Blizzard. I can almost guarantee they wont disappoint us, I too, however, still want to sit back and see more on the grand scheme.

Why is everybody gushing over this? Seeing the gameplay footage was so completely underwhelming for me. Take Diablo 2 , give it some 3D graphics and... you've got Diablo 3. Yay!
One would have thought Blizzard would evolve from something that was retro even back in 1997. But NO - same old, same old. Same as with Starcraft 2...
And the saddest thing is, this strategy will pay off, as evidenced by everyone's comments...

I was very excited by the possibility of Diablo III all throughout the week because the first two were a couple of the first games that I ever really got hooked on.
But now that they've shown III, I'm underwhelmed. It's essentially a better looking Diablo II. Now, I don't think sequels should be some radical step forward from the original. I'm fine with Gears of War 2 being similar to Gears of War. Enthusiastic, even.
But I do think sequels should offer some clear steps forward, especially when it's the sequel to an 8-year old game. I just don't think nicer graphics, some minor physics integration, and the ability to choose between a male and a female really cuts it.
It puts Diablo III in the akward position of playing catch-up to a number of Diablo clones that have taken the base that the first two Diablo games perfected and building on that with more choices, better combat, or a more fleshed-out cinematic story.
Don't get me wrong, as it is I'll undoubtedly play and enjoy Diablo III. But I'm just hoping they deliver the same magnitude of experience with III as they did with II eight years ago, and that's not gonna be possible by releasing the same game with nicer graphics. Hopefully they've got more up their sleeves.

so, my jaw literally dropped when I woke up this morning, logged onto Kotaku, and scrolled down to see all the news on Diablo 3.
I was excited when they revealed Starcraft 2.
But Diablo 3? My head almost exploded with pure joy overloads.
Sorry consoles, you will be ignored indefinetly when this comes out.

Definite God of War vibe I'm getting from the early gameplay video.
I like the blood effects, heard a sound recycled from Warcraft III (dying kobold, or gnoll or whatever those pig things are), really love the numerical damage thing that pops up when you hit, missing the "name at the top of the screen" thing. Luckily the health bars are easier for my colorblind self, though :)

@Mpalm.: In fact, I would call Diablo the most popular niche game, I am very aware of the enormous sales of the first ones, but the genre in general is losing popularity. I believe this game will sell tons of copies, and deservedly so, but I also believe it's appeal is a bit limited.

@Bishmon: Oh god, thankfully they didn't turn this into the crap that is WoW. I'll take fun, quick loot runs over 7 hour marathons that require 40 people and can result in you getting NO items.
@pikachumariachi: I wouldn't call Diablo a niche game... nope, not at all. Unless it' the most popular niche game ever made, more popular than many mainstream games.

Woah, just watched the gameplay vid and I gotta say, this game's just for the fans. I mean, I'm sure it's lots of fun, but it's appeal seems to be too niche. I mean, those screens and vids do nothing to entice a newcomer, at least they did nothing for me or people I showed it to. Wereas, if I show a gameplay video of Starcraft 2 to someone who's never heard of it they all go like "coooool". Then again, this is Blizzard and they, like Nintendo, oly make games that will be the best in their genre (with Nintendo I mean the main games, the Mario sports games and such don't count)

"Blizzard must have done something right. Can you name any huge evolution in RTS since Starcraft or the Loot runs in Diablo?"
Any evolution of the loot runs from Diablo? You mean, like, World of Warcraft?
I'm not saying they should have turned Diablo III into a MMORPG. That's just an easy example of how the 'kill-level-loot' concept has been evolved since Diablo II.

@SicariusIV: Because if they didn't, something like Oblivion would be born and then you'd be complaining it "just isn't the same". Oblivion is a game that die-hard Morrowind players dislike just because they strayed from the formula too much. It's just not the same. I only logged a fraction of the hours I spent in Morrowind in Oblivion. Half of what makes these games fun is the nostalgia factor and the fact that Diablo II still makes me play all night with my friends in a crammed apartment with potato chips, pop, and lights off without stopping.

@SicariusIV: I don't know how you can evolve a near-perfect game. This game is all about the loot runs; thats it.
Blizzard must have done something right. Can you name any huge evolution in RTS since Starcraft or the Loot runs in Diablo?
Titan Quest?= Failed
Hellgate?= Failed
Lair?=Failed
Sacred?=Failed.
So no, there is not much you can do with the isometric loot run game, except make it fun within its own perspective.
No one knows, this game could be utter shit; but seeing the track record, it is unlikely.

@SicariusIV: I'm pretty sure that fans of Diablo and Starcraft don't want radical changes, but if you don't think they haven't made clear steps forward with SC2 you aren't paying attention. This was only a short gameplay video for D3, we know nothing of the skill system, other classes, items, story, bosses, etc. Many fans (including myself) want a game that is heavily based on the predecessors we loved so much.

@PsycheE:
The main evolutive problem I am talking about is precisely the isometric loot-run formula. Blizzard could at least give it a different (more immersive) perspective, now that there is no technological reason to make it isometric... The different skills, bosses and all the other things you mention don't change the core gameplay loop (where the only fun part is getting the loot-reward, when it comes down to it).
As for the RTS genre, it's true that I'm not a big fan, but even when Starcraft was released other games were trying new things, like Myth or Total Annihilation. And today, I would cite Relic's games (Dawn of War and Company of Heroes) as bringing new things to the table in the RTS horizons.
You could say it depends on what you're looking for in a game. I can't dispute that, so go ahead and say it :p
But still, you can't dispute the fact that Blizzard was never (and probably will never be) a harbinger of originality in the games industry... They just remake the same old hot dog with different (but extremely polished and well-balanced) condiments.

This is why Blizzard is such an amazing developer. Not only can they keep a tight lid on things, but their presentation is spectacular. They bring a lot of class and quality to their product. The Diablo site, the trailer, production qualities, everything are amazing.
While I wasn't a huge fan of Diablo 2 (I did like it a lot but damn my wrist! And I played it years after it was released) yet I am looking forward to this far more than StarCraft 2 now for some reason. Blizzard has really outdone themselves this time.
What amazes me most about Blizzard is that their dedication to quality hasn't hindered a bit in over a decade, something that few if any other developers haven't been able to do. There has been no downhill for Blizzard. Amazing. (Well there is still the chance the next 2 games will suck, but cmon!)

The drop rate, equipment, and relative power of abilities is something you can't judge in the gameplay video since it was all set up. Their characters were probably way overpowered while the droprate was nerfed. Having the screen littered with useless crap while the characters are struggling probably wouldn't make for a good show.
