First Mario Super Sluggers Footage
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 5:00 PM on June 4, 2008
Looks like it's been lifted off the Japanese Nintendo Channel. And while it's awfully long, it's also awfully informative, taking the time to show you exactly how the game will control, and in the process answering any questions you probably have bout the thing. While it's slightly disappointing the game's controls don't go far beyond Wii Baseball's (in particular the pedestrian pitching), it's a Nintendo game. On the Wii. So it'll sell a million or two regardless.

Well whaddaya know another milk-off of Nintendo characters.
It looks good, graphically, but you can pretty much replace the Nintendo characters with ANY other characters...but would it sell as well?
Just my 2 cents.

Is it just me, or does Mario's voice sound a bit...off? I wonder if Martinet didn't do the Japanese voice for this one.

Doesn't look too bad. Here's hoping that there's a courtesy Classic Controller or GCN option for those of us who don't like hurting themselves from waving their arms around constantly.

So... you don't do anything outside of pitching/hitting? The CPU plays as the fielders? Can you steal bases or turn double plays?
@DannKnee: I can see that game competing directly against Madden. However, instead of a truck/hit stick you summon a landmaster to roll over your opponents.

@Neo_Deus: I think I've been noticing a gradual change in Martinet's voicing of Mario lately. Go back and start up 7 or 8 of the Mario games from the last few years on the DS, Cube, and Wii, and you'll likely hear that he sounds very different in some games than others. The games in which he sounds the same seem to be games in development near the same time frames.
It's not exactly important, but it's interesting.
And yeah, he might not be doing the voice in this one, but I've thought the same about other recent games until checking.

That's a pretty well-made video. For a second there, I though I was suddenly fluent in Japanese.
Sadly, the "baseball" segments in No More Heroes were about as much as I'm willing to dislodge my arm.
I know that if I played this game, I couldn't refrain from hitting like a madman - I tend to get carried away, 've always been a bit of an idiot that way.
Then I'd scoff at the tutorial for telling me it's not necessary to make ample or violent movements.
And finally, I'd wonder why the hell the game won't properly register my stupidly exaggerated strikes.

Looks like it's built greatly on the crap Wii Sports Baseball tech demo. Which is never ever played.
Maybe it's just my British-ness coming through but I'm still not sure I'd purchase a full Mario-themed Baseball game (if it even makes it over here). I mean, Mario Strikers Charged was so zany it was hardly football anymore.

@Josh*:That's the point of Mario Themed sports games you know? You don't buy them for realism and if you do, well..I weep for you, yanno? Also how can you compare Sluggers to Wii Sports Baseball when you haven't played it at all yet? Don't do that.
@Archaotic:Very unlikely. Mario Kart only had it because like Strikers, it's Mario Kart. Strikers was Wiimote/Nunchuck only.

@themadman123: We all want more quality games for the Wii, but who's to say this isn't one of them?
Mario Sports titles almost *always* play well, and they're a lot of fun, especially with friends. I don't think this is shovelware. It's no AAA, but definitely not shovelware.

I'm sure this will be good. Never did play the baseball one for GC, but I did want to. Hopefully this has online play.
But I'm also waiting for Mario Golf and Mario Tennis Wii. Shovelware they are not. One of the things I loved most about the N64 version of Mario Golf, was that some of the courses were simply the kind of thing you would never find in ANY other golf game. Like having a giant stone Bob-omb as a course hazard.

This does look boring, though I'll say this.
I hate Mario Party games and Mario Kart and pretty much every Mario Spinoff game.
BUT I played Mario Strikers Charged as a demo in Gamestop and it was so good I bought it on the spot. It is an AWESOME game and it looked stupid until I actually played it. The game is hilarious, hardcore, and addictive.

Ahem! Baseball IS boring, compared to most sports, including Bass Fishing. But you have to give Nintendo credit for (seemingly) coming up with extremely creative twists to a standard hit the ball and run game. I'll be buying this, it looks like it could be fun.

every time i see some game like this; mario baseball, mario soccer, etc. i think "maybe nintendo can't make "new" games anymore". sure, there's a new mario or zelda or metroid every three to five years, but i'm kind of over it at this point. i wouldn't even mind them milking some other character or brand in the roster like kid icarus or earthbound. i'd even take another donkey kong at this point. i'm saying i don't want to wait five years in between quality wii games. third party developers aren't going to being the good stuff on any kind of consistent basis. just more games geared for your mom.
(pause - before people start jumping my shit about fanboy this and the wii has games that, i'm speaking about ME. i don't give a fuck about you or what your mom plays. i like hard games and long RPGs, and would like to see games like that, at least, still have a corner of the market. the wii already has the stigma of being the game console for the "casual" gamer, but ii want to see at least a balance. ok end rant. continue post.... )
i'd like nothing better then to be proven wrong. but, the wii line up just doesn't interest me as of late. maybe wiiware will brighten up an otherwise boring next couple of months. word is that there won't be any "huge" game out at E3, unless you're into animal crossing. i don't know. i don't want to be down on the wii. i really don't.....

omg. this game looks epic. so much work put into this, even if it has the classic set mini games that I'm probably not going to touch.
I've loved playing baseball with friends during the Nes, snes days. it's WAY more fun with friends. as I got older people didn't even wanna give multiplayer baseball a try. It could also be because how complicated and simulated the games have gotten.
I think this game has great potential to be as fun as mario tennis with my friends. I just hope its not TOO easy to hit a homer. those pitches seemed pretty slow. I don't want to master the game in a day or two.

@CHU BOI: Seriously. Mario Tennis for the N64 was one of the greatest games ever, and Tennis for the GCN was sweet too (even if they didn't include my Baby Mario :( ) but I found solace in Koopa. I just didn't like the power shots in the GCN version cause it forced you to watch those stupid cut scenes over and over and over and over... if I had to watch Waluigi swim across the fucking court one more time I was going to drown something cute and cuddly.
@okrangerbob: Um no we don't already have this with Wii Sports... have you played Wii Baseball? You swing and pitch, that's all. At the very least, there are no power shots in Wii Baseball, so that alone makes it different.
My only hope for this game is that the AI is smarter... nothing like having a man on second, having an infield popfly and the damn computer turning a double play every single time because the moron on second started running for third. YOU DON'T RUN ON INFIELD POP FLYS! That was so frustrating...

People need to understand something:
Nintendo's prime demographics have always been Japan and America. Baseball's always been big in America and it's been getting a steady growth the last ten years. Meanwhile, baseball is absolutely HUGE in Japan recently. It's probably bigger over there than it is here, at this point. Is it any wonder Nintendo's going to put out another Mario baseball game? Especially considering how much fun it was for anyone who enjoys baseball to begin with. People need to piece together that not every single game out there is aimed at them. This is a baseball game with Mario characters. It is, I should think obviously, aimed at baseball fans who dig Mario. You may be surprised by this, but that's a pretty damn large demographic.

This main game looks boring as sin, as most baseball games are, but this one has nowhere near the depth of real ones. The mini games look like itll be the only redeeming quality to this title. People need to stop automatically accepting ever Mario title as a gift sent down from the gaming gods.

This game looks like it could be a lot of fun. I'll recommend it to my brother when it is released in the US. The Nintendo Channel seems to be very similar to what Sony is trying to do with their "Qore" video subscription service. It'll be interesting to see if both services prosper and widely used by the gaming community.
