First Shots Of PS3 Video Download Service, Due In 'Summer 2008'
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 8:30 PM on June 26, 2008
Sony held a little mid-term corporate strategy meeting today in Japan. On the menu? All kinds of Sony stuff, but of particular interest to us, all kinds of PlayStation-related stuff. First up? These shots of the PS3's upcoming video download service, which formed part of a presentation by Kaz Hirai. As you can see, it's largely identical to the current PlayStation Store interface, though it's nice seeing the whole thing move out of the "will be here sometime" stage and into what's surely the "will be here soon" stage. But how soon?
Part of Sony boss Howard Stringer's presentation touches on the company's "video service rollout strategy", whereby they're looking at getting video download services running on not just the PS3, but the PSP, laptops, phones and beyond. That presentation has, as you can see, the PS3 and PSP tentatively scheduled to see the service in "Summer 2008". Expect more info at E3.
Tokyo, Japan - Sony today presented a series of new initiatives designed to build on its previous three-year revitalization plan and to position the company as the leading global provider of networked consumer electronics and entertainment. In particular, the company will focus on strengthening core businesses, enhancing network initiatives and leveraging international growth opportunities to build for the future and drive further growth and profits. In addition, Sony announced the following key mid-term goals:
- Expand our PC, Blu-ray DiscTM-related products and component/semiconductor businesses into "trillion yen businesses**," joining LCD TVs, digital imaging (digital cameras and camcorders), game and mobile phones and raising the total number of "trillion yen businesses" to seven.
- Ensure that 90% of our electronics product categories are network-enabled and
wireless-capable by the fiscal year ending March 31, 2011 ("FY2010").- Roll out video services across key Sony products by FY2010, starting with the summer 2008 launch on the PLAYSTATION®Network.
- Double annual revenue from BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) countries to 2 trillion yen*** by FY2010.
* Three-year period ending March 31, 2011
** Businesses each generating 1 trillion yen or more of annual sales to outside customers, except for Blu-ray Disc
related business which includes intersegment sales*** Includes Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications and SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT as allocated
Sony has identified a 5% operating margin as a baseline of profitability to generate cash to continue to lead and innovate. Furthermore we will target an annual return on equity of 10% by FY2010. Sony is also planning to allocate a total of 1.8 trillion yen to invest in and build key businesses and technologies over the next three years.
Highlights are as follows:Further Strengthen Our Core Businesses
Sony intends to maintain a leading position in its "trillion yen businesses" (LCD TVs, digital imaging, game and mobile phones) and will focus on expanding its PC, Blu-ray Disc-related products, and component/semiconductor businesses into "trillion yen businesses" by the end of FY2010. At the same time, we expect to improve the operations of our TV business significantly and implement a variety of cost reduction measures to restore that business to profitability in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009*, and strive for the global No. 1 position in LCD TVs by FY2010. This press release was lifted off Kotaku. Of the planned 1.8 trillion yen investment over the next three years, approximately 900 billion yen will be allocated towards strengthening core focus areas within components and semiconductors, such as image sensors, batteries, display devices and Blu-ray Disc-related components. 1/3 Sony is also promoting the concept of "open innovation", whereby we are looking not only inside the company, but outside for technologies that foster innovation. By combing Sony's inherent technological strengths with external expertise, we aim to accelerate R&D efficiency and enable the company to effectively respond to rapidly changing customer needs and preferences in the network era.
Through the creation of new user experiences, strengthening core businesses, driving innovation, and minimizing the environmental impact of its operations, Sony will strive to achieve not only sales volume, but also sustainable and profitable growth. In the Game segment, the two key drivers of new growth are non-game content and services in tandem with enhanced network capability. Sony also expects to achieve profitability in this segment in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2009*, a significant year-on-year improvement due to hardware cost reductions and an enhanced line-up of software titles for PLAYSTATION®3 ("PS3"). Key Game initiatives are:
1. Expand content and services available on the network platform
2. Continue to expand the PS3 customer base through the strength of Blu-ray Disc
3. Accelerate PS3 sales through upcoming key franchise software titles
4. Continue PS3 cost reduction initiatives
* Forecast as of May 14, 2008Network Initiatives
Sony will increase network and wireless connectivity across its family of devices and build a service platform to provide a seamless user experience across our key hardware devices and content. We are planning to expand services that will enable our customers to enjoy content such as motion pictures and television programming through the network on a variety of Sony\ products such as BRAVIATM LCD TVs, PS3, PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and Walkman® video music players.
Sony's unique position in electronics and entertainment allows us to offer compelling network services. As an example of our potential, this November, Sony Pictures Entertainment will offer one of the most highly anticipated films of the summer, "Hancock", exclusively to all internet connected BRAVIA LCD TVs in the U.S. before it is available on DVD. This film will be distributed to Sony customers directly to their televisions outside conventional distributors and without the need for any set-top box. This is an industry first.

Dear SCE, here's a tip to making your service successful: make sure you let us choose the original language with subtitles.
XBL Marketplace will only let me download dubbed versions, which de facto kills any chance that I'd download movies to my tiny 120GB HDD... I'm sure digital downloads are the future, but they're not the present - at least, not MS's version of them.

renting/buying movie downloads just doesnt appeal to me. No portability, and it takes forever to download and store the things.

Good news really.Just make it a cheaper price point than MS.I think I've only rented like 4 movies from Live Marketplace.I also want to be able to keep them.
Looks like the 2.4 info will be on the blog Monday,so Sony seems to be rolling along lately.

That's wierd,I'm opposite. My 360 is way slower than my PS3.Both are wireless. My PS3 downloads are even faster after 2.36.They sit side by side.
Unless,it's like a XBLA game and that goes pretty quickly.

I sent in a tip, but somehow I think they never get read but anywhere here goes:
PSN downtime added a new menu item hinting at video store. Go to the PSN section of the XMB > Account Management > Account Management > Activate System. There, you will see a new option to activate the system for different types of content.

Oh, so we can expect a Bravia Internet Link that doesn't suck in 2009?
But, more on topic, it's hard to know how good the service is going to be without prices, quality information, DRM information, and PSP integration information. But, at least it has a pretty interface, which is a good start.

This is going to be awesome, I hope Sony doesn't hold back on the titles available. They could easily blow iTunes out of the water. With all the movie studios that Sony owns and the other studio relationships they have due to blueray they have the potential of having a huge library available.
Also the video's need to be available as buy and rentals which Im sure will be. Sony always said that they're competing with iTunes on this, Xbox Marketplace is a joke compared to iTunes.

@dapoktan: not true.. many times my PS3 downloads blazing fast, even firmware updates. then there are the slower times for who knows why (new game demo etc)
same for 360 many times its plenty fast, then it has its slow times as well...
Neither is faster than the other, all depends on network congestion.

I have the slow PS3 downloads problem as well. My 360(on the same wired router)downloads at a much faster rate. For those that have quick PS3 downloads, is there a network setting you've changed or tweeked? I'm using ddwrt so I have many options but I'm also wondering if that could be the issue itself. Any ideas?

I'm really concerned about the download speeds. I'm hoping part of the delay of this service was to add some more muscle to the servers. As things are now, downloading a hi-def movie would take hours.

@doubledown: I think the slow download problem affects everyone with PS3s...I have the same problem and so do my friends.
My 360 can download 1 GB in the time it takes my PS3 to download 350MB.

Well this works for those who put in their own bigger hard drive at the start or those who bought an 80 gig system but my 60GB and the 20GB's wont be able to do this stuff with the memory they have.
The mandatory installs consume too much memory...I kinda get a kick out of MS and Sony for putting puny hard drives in their consoles and then launching these gigabyte eating digital distribution programs.
For those who can download these movies I hope you can own them on the XMB and they aren't just rentals.

This sounds cool, but I have no damn hard drive space left. I have the 60gb, and only have some demos and a few videos and music on it, and ridiculously enough, I'm now just under 5gb.
Guess it's time to ready up for this with a bigger drive that I really don't want to pay for. Maybe a 200gb will suffice.

My 360 Elite dloads things ALOT faster than my PS3 does, MOST times.I also don't like the small tile setup of the new PS Store. You need a magnifying glass tyo tell what you'e looking at.Most movies that I want, I already own on dvd,BlueRay, or HD-DVD and the few I don't buy i can usually get HD via Comcast 'OnDemand" or through the 360 Video store.Any store Sony may implement will likely be successful but not in the same ballpark as 360 Video Store,iTunes, or Amazon video dload. One thign they COULD do to get a leg up on the competition is by renting/selling their media at lower prices than the competition.

The last time I did a PS3 update, it took over 20 minutes. My 360 has never been longer than 2 minutes to update. If the movie downloads are as slow, I'll defenitly pass on buying/downloading from the PS Store.

I think the Howard Stringer Effect is finally coming into fruition. This is the most consolidated effort that we have ever seen from sony. The fact that this is something that will be implemented across the pantheon of sony products is quite an achievement for a company notorious for being somewhat like a hydra.
By the way, where is the pie chart for last weeks japanese hardware sales? I kinda wanted to see how MGS made the pie look.

So, do you BUY or RENT movies through this? If you buy them, the price on these is $6, I'd TOTALLY pay that to buy an HD movie for my PS3... but if it's just rentals like the 360, I have absolutely no interest. Never used it for my 360, never will.

@dapoktan: i have the ps3 and the 360 connected via ethernet cable through the same switch (only the wii is on the wifi). for the most part, especially on large downloads like system updates, i can't say that i notice any appreciable difference in download speed between them. maybe it's your wifi.
