Godfather II Will Have RTS-Like Features
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 1:40 PM on June 18, 2008
More John Riccitiello at the William Blair & Company conference! This time, he's talking about the company's Godfather sequel, and what he's saying doesn't sound too bad at all:
You can play this game both at the street level, much like a GTA-style game, but you can also play it top-down, almost like you're in an RTS, controlling the strategy of the boroughs so you can see what's going on..
So...there are parts where you play, and parts where you command at a more strategic level? So...X-Com, with mobsters? Neat idea, if they can pull it off.

@okenny :): Maybe they'll do something like Company of Heros with Mobsters?

@Luke: Isn't X-com turn-based strategy?

"It's a game that I think we'll be talking a lot about this fall," Riccitiello told investors.
I think it is safe to assume that The Godfather II is a 2009 release.
@Zerbrechen: Yes.
If anyone is curious about what else Redwood Shores is working on aside from this and Dead Space, according to the studio's recruiter, EA has teams on another Simpsons game and "Inferno" - probably Dante's Inferno.

@KM91: What would really be cool is if they set down a base story, but then set you loose in the city. The thing is, like Scarface (the movie, not the game), you have to make your own decisions to stay alive- else all of the other Dons will send assassin forces to kill you and, after killing a huge amount of people in a coke-fueled rage, you will be killed by a man with a hideous hairstyle.
Revolutionary!

EA's marketing dept should totally hire you, Luke. They could slap a sticker on every box: "X-Com - With Mobsters!"
Sales to PC gaming nostalgics / tragics would go through the roof...

Sounds good to me. Being able to actually be the Don and send hitmen and other flunkies to take out rival gamngs and other enemies.

It seems to be a radical expansion of the features in Blackhand, features that were really cool.
In fact, anything that sets this (and any other open-world game) apart from GTA4 is instantly welcomed by me (you can't beat GTA4, don't even try)

Wowaweewah! That's pretty crazy, and I'm skeptical if this could actually work.

I'm pumped. The first was my favorite open-world game ever, and I've played 'em all.

Yeah, I don't see how one gets x-com from that description. At all.

Isn't this how the PSP version of Godfather is? I never played it, but used to work at Gamestop and remember warning customers that it wasn't a port of the console version. For some reason I'm thinking Scarface was strictly a strategy game. I could look it up, but I'm off to play some MGS4.

I actually enjoyed the original Godfather to some extent, though once you beat it there was never a reason to touch it again.
I suspect I'll snag Godfather II as long as it ups the ante and options like this sound like they are doing just that.
Hopefully it has multi-player as well though, I needs me that in my games these days.

I loved Don's Edition,but if it actually forces you to play it in RTS-like mode at any point instead of it being just an option, I won't buy it.

Finally! I always wanted an RTS element in my open world games. I thought San Andreas was on to something with the gang warfare but it was sooo poorly executed. Crossing fingers that this won't suck monkey balls!

In which part of the series did the Don become Muad'Dib?
Will you also have the option of throwing a full out atomic bombarding over your enemies bases? Will you find Sand Worms in the Big Apple? And will you be able to date blue-eyed Fremen cuties?

@pandafresh: I'm pretty sure it was called Gangsters. I remember playing it but not a lot about it.
I'd heard good things of this game but neglected to ever play it. Still don't like it being based on the films though.

This game definitely "won" the first round of open-world games this gen IMO. The graphics may not have been quite as good as Saint's Row, but Jesus Christ, the territory control was addictive.
Let's hope they don't mess it up.

Awesome awesome awesome. The thing that makes The Godfather stand out from every other GTA clone is that it doesn't feel like GTA. Now they're gonna give us more of that. THANKS GUISE!
