Posted by Leigh Alexander at 6:27 AM on June 6, 2008

Grand Theft Auto IV has sold 8.5 million units to date, with 11 million shipped to retail as of May 31, the company's second quarter financial results revealed today.
In its first week, GTA IV sold 6 million units, to the tune of $US 500 million in net sales.
As for BioShock, Take-Two said it had shipped over 2.2 million units since its late August debut, though GTA IV sales were the primary driver to $US 98.2 million in profits on the quarter for the publisher.

thats crazy
cod4 just sold 10 million copies and that came out last year. Man the game could really sell 18 million copies by the end of the year!

@Thorax: GTAIV sold that many copies and you're trying to tell me people AREN'T retarded?
I'm only partially joking. I own a copy, after all. I'm surprised at how far away that episodic content is, though. You'd think they would want a Christmas release.

I think we're all missing something: Bioshock actually sold pretty well. A game with serious overtones no less, giving me hope that people aren't as retarded as once thought.

I would love it if Rockstar actually made 98 dollars and 20 cents after all of that.

I really am enjoying this game, but I have to admit, it goes to the backburner when MGS4 hits.

GTA is pretty much expected, but I had no idea that BioShock hadn't even moved 3 mil copies. It's a great game with great word of mouth and great reviews. Wonder if it would've moved more if they hadn't slapped the reportedly horrible DRM on the PC version?

This comes to no surprise... Its a Great game!
When I went to buy the game on release date here in Norway the first store I went to was sold out..The second store which is a big chain store -didnt have a single copy.I asked the clerk why and she told me that they didnt get the game at all ,and never would because it is too violent. I asked myself then and still do while looking at these numbers..How many costumers and not to mention money did they loose making that decision?..*sigh* At least I got a copy in the third store..The second last they had:D

@Hdfisise:
If the profit was just on GTA IV then sure that number would be much higher, but that 98 million is factoring other 2K games as well and they're all not doing as great as GTA will.
These are the games they released during that fiscal quarter:
Bully: Scholarship Edition
Dora the Explorer: Dora Saves the Mermaids™
Go, Diego, Go!: Safari Rescue™
Grand Theft Auto IV
Major League Baseball® 2K8
Major League Baseball® 2K8 Fantasy All-Stars

Yeah this should raise take two's stock a bit. I wonder what effect this will have on the deal over all. I don't think take two can escape the ea bid

seems to be quite a low profit figure if you think about it. I guess that they must have cut off the figures a bit early and that the next quarter will show the true profit.

Wow. I know GTA is huge, but this is staggering.
Also The first time I read :
GTA IV sales were the primary driver to $98.2 million in profits on the quarter for the publisher.

@Thorax: Just because they bought it doesn't mean they "got it". I'm willing to bet half those players just wanted Atlas and Ryan to shut up so they could get back to shooting.

Grand Theft Auto is happily the second multi platform game that looks like the devs gave a shit. It should happily skip off into the sun with CoD at its side.

Too much bloom, blur and muted colours. Not to mention the same old quests, with the addition of some really annoying new ones. It's still a good game, but not worth it's rating or hype.

@LittleBigPlaneteer: 98 million still seems low. You listed 5 games other than GTA IV. If you grant them $30 million for each of those 5 games(we all know they probably didn't spend that much on any one of those games), that would only account for $150 million in expenses and that isn't factoring in any sales or profit for any of those games. I know they spent a lot on GTA IV, but the article says they made "net" sales of $500 million in the first week. Where is the money pit at T2?

I don't get the math:
$500 million / 6 million copies = $83.33 per copy.
They are saying NET, so that means profit.
So, each copy earns them a net of 139% profit?
Great game, but I don't get it.
