Halo Wars Gets Two-Player Co-op
Posted by Michael McWhertor at 11:30 AM on June 10, 2008
The latest issue of GamePro magazine features cover story treatment on Ensemble Studios real-time strategy take on the Halo universe, Halo Wars. According to the mag, by way of TeamXbox, the Xbox 360 game will feature multiplayer for up to six via LIVE, with a two-player co-op campaign to keep things interesting. If you want more info beyond that, you'll have to seek out the July issue of GamePro for more.
In the meantime, the online arm of the publication has released four new Halo Wars screen shots—four obscenely watermarked and painfully blurry screen shots with a very odd perspective, but four screen shots nonetheless.

Co-op? That just changed my opinion from "I'll maybe get it one day.." to "I'll get it for sure, although maybe not right away."

As long as players don't have to share the same camera this will be great.

RTS games have always had Co-Op. On the PC anyways... where they belong.

that new game or RTS made console controls pretty easy, i forgot what game it was called i think it was universe at war, but i was fairly impressed how easy it was to move units assign locations and get to the action quick.
i have hope in console RTS's

@RonCey: I dunno bro. I'm still an old-school Starcraft player, so I guess I'll always have that train of thought. I haven't played any console RTS's (unless you count Starcraft 64.. yikes), so I really can't say for sure, but in my head a mouse and keyboard is the only way to go.
I do hope it does well to prove me wrong though.

This game should be exciting. Ensemble studios really knows what they are doing. Some Halo fans are going to be pissed, but I think the majority of fans at least have an idea of what they are getting in to here.

Get with the times man.
RTS can be done on a console perfectly fine now.

I have the feeling that a lot of people will purchase this game for the Halo brand to be surprised what a RTS really is.

This is going to do great- until all the idiots who compromise the main Halo fanbase realize this is nothing like the FPS they love.
Then, it will be in the bargain bin faster than you can say "What the hell is this? This is too hard. Forget this shit. I'll just go kill hookers in GTAIV."
Face it- There are smart Halo fans, but 1% of 10 million is not enough to garner incredible sales for Halo Wars. And considering what MS will be expecting from the Halo franchise, expect some lay-offs or pissed whatevers.

Not sure how an RTS can fare on a console.

@Thugmunk:
you should try C&C3 demo on the 360. The controls are amazing to be honest, and this is coming from a veteran PC rts player. Will anything beat the mouse click and drag box? Hell no, but RTS on consoles today are nothing like they were 10 years ago. Its a common misconception.
Im looking forward to Halo wars. Should be a lot of fun. Im intrigued by the 6 player multiplayer as other rts games on the 360 are limited to 4 player.
But anyway...Guys i highly suggest you try the c&c3 360 demo as it will change your mind about console RTS being impossible. Its no starcraft on the n64 or red alert on the playstation. it actually works.

@RykinPoe: How is managing more troops and less resourses "dumbed down" from managing less troops and more resources? Seems to be a lateral move to an RTS of a different style. Considering the studio developing this RTS I can't imagine it being "dumbed down" or any less deep than most RTS's out there now.

I hope the co-op allows for a shared setup like Starcraft does. It is always nice to let one player focus on building while the other handles offense and defense. Of course with this being a dumbed down RTS for Halo fans you probably won't really need something like that.

@Palladium: Wow, intelligent comment. You do realize you can substitute "Halo" in your complaint and put almost any other action or nonRTS title in your complaint and get the same result. Besides I don't think you know the Halo fanbase that well. Yeah, average Joe Schmoe kid whose mom buys him Halo and plays online screaming racial slurs (and that's not just Halo mind you, I get that on online games across all platforms), but your actual true Halo fan is a lot more astute than most fans that get hardcore about a game. These are the same fans who Bungie works to make incredibly complex ARG's for them to work through to give them extra back story before every Halo game's release all the way back to Halo 1 and the Cortana letters (you had to recognize a fair bit of poetry to work through some of the most recent Halo 3 Iris ARG that they did it was pretty awesome). A large portion of the Halo community is drawn to the series because there is a much broader and more thoughtfull overall experience than a large majority of games give. Don't stereotype and don't believe everything your fanboy friends tell you.

I just played some Civilization Revolution. Given it's turn-based nature, I think it's pretty suited for a console, and it was a ton of fun. My biggest worry comes from how you would be able to micro your units effectively. I guess not every RTS needs a micro-managing mechanic, as proven by Civ, but without being able to use the quick reflexes to maneuver your units strategically, I feel the console version could be a lot more simplified.
I am downloading C&C 3 demo as I write this. Can't wait!

Two-player co-op sounds awesome. Can't say I've ever seen an RTS that lets you play through the campaign in co-op before. Sounds like a cool idea.

If nothing else, I can dig an RTS with a co-op campaign. I'm holding out for Starcraft 2 to have co-op functions, and if Halo Wars turns out to be pretty decent, this could warrant it a purchase as well.

@Palladium:
It is the normal stereotype for Halo players no?
@enewtabie: That or they're going to be extremely disappointed.
If I was Ensemble or MS, I'd put a conservative estimate on how many units they'll sell. Sure the Halo brand will move copies. But this is not the typical semi-casual's preferred genre.
Basing on what I've seen so far of this game (hands-on impressions and videos). I'm really pumped to try this out. And I haven't even finished any of the Halo games even!
Now Co-op...does it have split screen? I kid! =)
Nice feature! The concept of building armies and combining them to make a siege is a very great idea.

I didn't even complete the objectives, I just liked the building of massive armies for no reason. The controls worked really well too.

Looking at their demo videos, ensemble has seemed to nail down the console rts controls perfectly, and a halo rts? I'm sold.
