How To Get Siren: Blood Curse On Blu-Ray
Posted by Luke Plunkett at 10:20 PM on June 27, 2008
The third game in the Siren series - Blood Curse - will be coming in two flavours. In Japan, you'll be able to get it on Blu-Ray. But in the US? It's being released as episodic, downloadable content, presumably in order to test the waters, see if there's really a market for the game in the US. Fine for Sony, but what if you're less a single-issue buyer, more a trade paperback kinda guy? Here's what you do: import the Asian edition of the game, which also comes on a Blu-Ray disc. Like most Asian edition's, it contains an English-language option, so you'll have it all on one disc and be able to understand the thing. Win win!

No, there's no pirating on the PS3.

@lordofsword:
Yup, most important, the main creator of the series, Keiichirō Toyama, is lead designer of this installment

@gencid: there are only english voices. silent hill was the same (and this is actually made by some original members of team silent) - the characters speak english so they don't bother recording another voice track. in the demo, all the hints, options etc were in japanese but the voices were all english so presumably any retail version will be the same.

Ah yes, the joys of a region-free console. I just wish Blu-ray and DVD movies were region-free too. In fact, I wish regional lockouts were never invented. At all.

Luke, can you please clarify whether the English option is for voice overs or subtitles or both?

I'm not sure if that's the best way to test the waters.
If everyone holds out for the Blu-Ray release, then:
a. nobody will download the episodic version, at which point:
2. Sony will think no one's interested and cancel the Blu-Ray version, leading to:
π. everybody will buy the downloadable version because that's the only way they can get the game, after which:
VII. Sony will think, "Hey, looks there is a market after all!" and push a Blu-Ray release...
Ω. ...which won't sell because anyone interested will have purchased the episodic version already.
Test conclusion: HUUUUH?!
Phew.

Sounds good. Rather than being an episodic content, they could just... you know, release the full game via PSN and I wouldnt mind buying it rather than installments on the PSN(which doesnt sound very enticing imo)

It would be great if there was an English subtitle option, rather than the voice over ... but it's cool. Hopefully the voice over is good. I was wondering with all the downloadable episodes costs combined, will it be as much as the blu-ray disc ($60)?

What has changed in this game that they can release it episodically at all? Obviously I haven't played the sequel but in the original Siren part of the overall mystique was the missions played in a convoluted order that changed depending on your actions. Is this game really that much more linear?
Also, on Play-Asia they mention "fatal finishing moves"....that makes me weep for the immortal Shibito of yesteryear...

@ksins5:
I bought the Japanese edition of Metal Gear Solid 4 here in Japan because I thought I could wait 2 months before returning to the States to buy it but caved in. It's funny to see a blond, black dude speaking Japanese to an old, white, mustachioed man in a war in the middle east while a monkey offer dances around.
Also, sorry for the tangent but, living in Japan I now understand why the Italian plumbers Mario and Luigi have a penchant for mushrooms. Kind of like how Old Snake drinks Japanese energy drinks and eats noodles on the battlefield. Japanese people need to get out more.

@dead_red_eyes: with the exception of one Japanese girl and a Japanese man, most of the characters in "Siren: Blood Curse" are Americans. It'd be weird if they speak Japanese most of the time and we get to see the translation of their conversation in English subtitles.

Such is the beauty of region-free media!

The SIREN series are games were you NEED to be able to read the archive items you pickup; does the Asian version just have English voice or English text also? If not then its download content for me.

Isn't this only a viable solution if you're playing in HD?
I could have sworn I read that the system is region free in HD, but not in SD, due to a unified HD standard, as opposed to SD.

How much will the downloadable episodes be?
How often will they come out?
It will suck if you finish one in a couple of hours, then can't get the next episode for a week.
It will also suck if the total for all 12 episodes is more than $60.

@raptorsrevenge: @noliferuin (PSN):
It's not exactly region free. It's apparently region free for games, but not for Blu-ray movie discs.
Unlike DVD's though, which I think had 9 regions to them. Blu-ray only has 3. Thank heavens, the U.S. and Japan are both in the same region for Blu-ray discs.

@AnonymousNoob: Huh? No. It's as simple as all PS3 games are region-free, PS2 and PS1 are DVD-region locked, and Blu-Ray movies are Blu-ray locked (most Blu-ray discs are region free though so it's not a big problem).

off topic, kinda, but something that's bothered me slightly, as games are region free on the PS3, on blu-ray at least, importing is a viable option for me (living in Europe where everything takes forever to come out), and I know foreign PSone and PS2 discs don't work on the PS3, but what about PSone games downloaded from the Playstation store in other regions?

It's win-win, if you don't care about the whole overseas shipping thing.
@noliferuin (PSN):
I only have anecdotal evidence, but I definitely remember going to a console cafe (an internet cafe, but with 360's and PS3's instead of PCs) that pirated PS3 games by downloading them to the hard drive.

Beware of mixing imported games with DLC from a different PSN Store.
As in, if you buy the Japanese Siren, make sure you buy the DLC from the Japanese PSN Store, not from the American PSN Store.
